Lift Lane, Anderton, Northwich, Cheshire, CW9 6FW

Are you up to the challenge?  You have exactly two hours 120mins.  All you have to do is take 20 photographs.  But here’s the catch:  There must be no duplicate images.  No retakes.  No deletions.  The twenty images must be consecutive frames.  At the end of the challenge, you must show all twenty images.

The challenge isn’t easy.  You have an average of 6 minutes per shot, including getting between the locations you are going to shoot.  The challenge makes you think about each and every frame you take.  Check your settings and your composition before hitting the shutter release.

I am organising this free event at the Anderton Boat Lift near Northwich.  Meet at the picnic tables at the car par park at 12:30pm and bring your sandwiches we will start the challenge afterwards at about 1:15pm.  (There is a small fee for the car park).

Full details about the boat lift can be found on their website: https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/places-to-visit/anderton-boat-lift-visitor-centre

Address: Anderton Boat Lift Lift Lane, Anderton, Northwich, Cheshire, CW9 6FW  View on Google map

Even though there is no charge for this event please can you book via my website so that I know how many people are going to be coming.

At the end of the challenge we can meet in the cafe at the visitors’ centre for a drink, a snack and a chat.. and so we can look at what we have each photographed.

I have just published a blog post which gives some background to this event “How to improve your photography in less than 2hrs” : https://www.ians-studio.co.uk/2019/08/blog-19-aug-2019-how-to-improve-your-photography-in-less-than-2hrs/

I hope to see you the Anderton Boatlift on Sunday 25th August – DON’T FORGET TO BOOK YOUR PLACE BELOW.

Something a bit different for this “Friday Night at the Studio” event.  I keep getting people asking me what is involved in getting an LRPS or and ARPS from the Royal Photographic Society.  At this event I will explain the process.  I will show you my LRPS and ARPS panels and provide you with some feedback/critique on any panels you are planning to submit to the society.

I have run this event several times previously.  Those who attended last time found the event very helpful in preparing their submissions.  And even those who are not planning to submit found the information and feedback on their images helpful.

Please Note: Although I am a member of the RPS and I have an ARPS distinction.  I hold no position with the RPS and this session is not authorised by the RPS.  The views expressed are my own and are based on lessons I learned while preparing my own images for submission.

A minimum of three photographers booking will be required to run this event.

Bring images to be critiqued.  Get answers to photography questions.  See how YOUR photos can be enhanced in post-production.

The format of the session is simple, come with images.  They don’t have to be your best images, the session works best with images that didn’t quite work – and perhaps you don’t know why.  Come with photography related questions, is there a technique you want to understand, is there some photography advice you need.

We will load images into Adobe Lightroom, and go through them, looking at them projected on the studio wall.  We talk about what works and what can be improved.  If appropriate we then look at post-production techniques that can be used to enhance the images.

Interspersed between the images, I will do my best to answer your photography questions, explaining techniques and helping you learn new skills.  Perhaps you have the solution to someone else’s photo issues and can help them.  There will be a chance to share and help each other too.

Not only will you get answers to your own questions and advice on how to improve your photographs, but you get to hear the questions and answers from other photographers.  It should all make for a fun evening where we can all learn more.  This event will be free for Academy Members but there will be a charge of £9 for non-members.

A minimum of two photographers booking will be required to run this event.

Don’t forget, Academy Members get in for  FREE (and save £8).
Did you know that it only costs £6 to join The Academy for one month?   So why not join the Academy today and save money on this event?

This is a beginner session on how to manage all your digital images.  The session starts by looking at the difference between shooting JPG images and shooting RAW images, and the pros and cons between them.

The next section of the session covers naming conventions and filing conventions and why it is important to settle on a standard that works for you.

The final part of this session is an overview and walk-through of Adobe Lightroom.  Lightroom is the tool we recommend for managing and processing your images.

This session is the foundation session for our series of Adobe Lightroom training sessions.

This session may be taken as a standalone session or in conjunction with the other Lightroom sessions.  As with all Academy Events – printed training notes will be provided.

Suitable for: Beginners or anyone struggling to manage their ever-growing collection of digital images.  Not all cameras are capable of shooting in RAW mode, but if your camera is and you don’t yet shoot in RAW this session will help convince you to make the switch.  The overview of Lightroom is intended to be a very quick overview giving a flavour of what Lightroom can do.  For detailed Lightroom training see events:

The Lightroom Library Module is where we organise and manage our images.  In this session, we look at how to use the import dialog and what the different options in it mean.  We also look at ways we can use import to finally get a grip on the multitude of images stored on our computer system.

Once images are in Lightroom we look at assigning metadata and keywords so that we easily locate our images again in the future.  While looking at adding metadata we also cover the use of the Map Module for assigning geographic metadata.

We look at the use of collections and smart collections as methods for organising our images.  We also look at some of the lesser-known facilities in the library module such as using the painter tool.

Suitable for: Those just starting to learn Lightroom, and those who feel they don’t yet use the full power of the Library Module.

This event is one of a series of training events that together make up our Lightroom Training Course – events can be stand-alone training events or all sessions can be taken as a comprehensive course.

A minimum of two photographers booking will be required to run this event.

Learn how to cut mats and mounts for your photographs.  I have a Longridge mount cutter at the studio, which can give accurate cuts for mounting your images.  The mount cutter is free to use for anyone who attends events at the studio, or who hires the studio.

If you have never cut your own mounts before you probably will not know just how easy it is when you use a professional mount cutter.

For tonight’s event I will show you the techniques involved, once you have been shown you are welcome to use the cutter at the studio whenever you need to cut future mounts.

Bring a couple of prints you want to mount/mat to this event.  Also either bring the frame it is to go into or the dimensions of the frame so that you can cut your mounts to the correct size.

Materials included in the price will be sufficient to mount either two prints unbacked or one print with backing.   Based on 50x40cm frames.  For smaller frames you may get more mounts from the material supplied.

The number of participants at this event will be limited to 5.
