A carbon resistor
Photographers Direct were requesting image of different types of resisters. I contacted a local teacher and borrowed a whole set from physics lab rehostats to small carbon resistors (as shown here).
2015 Update:
None of the images sold via photographers direct, however several of them DID sell some time later via Alamy. Resistance is NOT useless!

It’s the wrong way round!
I made an engagement ring for Zoe out of one. Resistors will never be useless.
Andrew you don’t fool me. “Useless NOT is Resistance” can’t possibly be the right way round!
Analogue isn’t useless either.
She was only an electrician’s daughter, but none of the lads could resist ‘er.
Actually, Andrew is correct. The colour code should be read from left to right but you have the tolerance band at the left.

Personally I prefer 2^4.
To keep the pedants happy I have now updated the image. I can’t change it here on Facebook but I have changed the image on my website. Click the image to see the revised version.
