The place of sacrifice

Please Note: Due to having no internet access while visiting Tunisia, this photodiary is running late! I will be posting two or three times each day for the next week or so until the diary is running in ‘real time’ again.  Please be sure to use the ‘previous’ link to ensure that you don’t miss any entries.

4 April 2006 – Carthage
Today we took the train from Tunis up to what remains of ancient Carthage and then later on to Sidi Bou Said.

The first place we visited in was the Tophet in Carthage.  This was the place where child sacrifices took place in the ancient Carthage.  The photograph shows the underground chamber where the acts were carried out.  For all it’s grizzly history there was a great sence of calm and quiet over the site.  A tranquil place with a horrific past.
