I wish there was some sensible way in G+ to set my display name to "Ian M Butterfield" without having to set my first name to be "Ian M"? (There's another photographer called "Ian Butterfield" so I really need the "M" in there to distinguish me!)

Not yet. It relies on your google profile name and that's only two fields.
Quite, Matz. Hope they fix that. I hate seeing "In Ian M's Circles" etc littered across the screen.
Strange that this isn't available since the Americans are big on the old middle initial thing (Laurence A Saunders)!
