Forthcoming Events
Friday, 18 January 2013 – Wide Open Night
Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £25
Hosting this event will be Rick Bradbury.
This event will be all about shooting Wide Open… Grab that nifty fifty or fast glass and crank open those apertures… its time to take a break from F8 and shoot some beautiful shallow depth of field images.
We will have access to a large number of modifiers to experiment with along with speedlites with the lower power range that comes with using them. The modelling lights can also make great low powered continuous light sources for shooting wide open.
If you have just purchased or may be received a new fast prime lens then this is the perfect event to attend to give it a run.
You will need…
- Camera, Cards, Batteries
- Fast Lens (50 F1.8, or 2.8 glass) But don’t worry if you only have F4 lens we can still make it work.
- You may want to bring a tripod or mono pod for when we use the modelling lights; you can shoot hand held by cranking the ISO.
I am pleased to announce the model for this Event will be Bex Lendon. It’s going to be great.

Starting on Wednesday 20th February….. our new studio based training course: The Comprehensive Studio Photography Course.
This six or nine session course will cover all aspects of studio based people photography. Each week we will work with different models to create great images, and learn studio techniques.
- Session 1 : Understanding the light – In this first session we will create dramatic head-shots using a single light source and a large range of different light modifiers. By the end of this session you will understand how to set up a studio light, and what effect each modifier has on the final image we are creating.
- Session 2 : Multiple lights – In this session we create interesting portraits by adding in additional light sources. We look at ratios and metering multiple light sources By the end of the session you will be able to set up multiple lights, and under why and when you need to add an extra light.
- Session 3 : Posing & Fashion – In this session we concentrate on how to pose your subjects. We will also look at how to use grey backgrounds and introduce the use of gels to colour light.
- Session 4 : Photographing men & couples – In this session we work with male and female models. We consider some of the techniques for photographing men and how to pose and light couples.
- Session 5 : Boudoir & Lingerie – using low-key lighting and specially created studio sets we look at different ways to create boudoir images.
- Session 6 : Latex, tatoos and alternative models – in this session you will be encouraged to design and set-up your own lighting to best show off our alternative model.
For the following three sessions the models will be working to nude levels and are therefore optional.
- Session 7 : Glamour – In this session we look at glamour photography. The emphasis will be on hi key lighting set-ups either seamless white or using coloured background papers.
- Session 8 : Art Nude – For this session the emphasis switches to low-key lighting as we consider the creation of art nude images.
- Session 9 : Working with water and other messy substances – for the final session we we look at some of the challenges of working with water and other messy substances such as paint/slime in the studio.
All course participants will receive full printed full printed notes to accompany the course. The notes will cover topics such as posing guidelines, advice on working with models, and sample lighting set-ups.
Additionally each attendee will receive a voucher for 3hrs fee studio hire (worth £50) – to be taken within 6 months of the end of the course. This is your chance to put in to practice all the skill you have learned on the course.

From the Blog…
Adobe Photoshop CS2 for free…?
A few day’s ago the internet ‘lit up’ with postings about Adobe giving away Photoshop CS2 for free. This was swiftly followed by Adobe stating that they weren’t giving it away for free. Here’s some of the facts behind this and a few thoughts of my own. I’ll let you make up your own mind….
At the end of 2012 Adobe switched off the authentication servers for the CS2 family of products. This means that anyone who has bought CS2 can no longer install it using the serial number that came with it. But people have paid a lot of money for this product and have the right to carry on using it. In order to enable them to do this Adobe created a special version (and it is the full version) and a special serial number which will enable anyone in possession of both to install and use the software.
They then posted details of both the download links and the corresponding serial number on their website. It is here…. go take a look…
http://www.adobe.com/downloads/cs2_downloads/index.html
Since the internet went wild and the story hit just about every photography forum on the net what have Adobe done about this? They have issued a statement saying the only people who are allowed to use the downloads and the serial numbers they have published are people who already own CS2.
I find it hard to believe that Adobe are so naive that they didn’t consider the possibility that details of that page wouldn’t be plastered all over the internet. Also if they really considered it a big mistake why not immediately take the page down once the story broke? And why did they want to take down the authentication servers in the first place?
I think Adobe knew all too well that the links would go public and people would start to download the product and use the serial codes. Is this just a form a viral advertising by them?
Adobe have said that the only people who can legally use the downloads and links are people with a CS2 licence. It is often said that illegal software is theft. Well if someone was steeling from me, I’d make every effort to stop them… I see no efforts being made by adobe to stop people downloading using this software. They haven’t even put a message on the download page stating who can and can’t use the software and licence codes.
Is it a free version? It is on Adobe’s own website and there is nothing to prevent you from installing this version on your computer. I guess ultimately it is down to your own conscience.
Rope
I am currently directing a play at Stockport Garrick Theatre. It is Rope by Patrick Hamilton. As a direct result of this Rick Bradbury will be running the Friday night event at the studio so that I can attend the final dress rehearsal for Rope. The event is “Wide Open Night”
I now a number of readers of this blog have an interest in Theatre and several of you have come to past productions that I have been involved with. If you would like to come to see Rope you can book ticked through the Stockport Garrick website.
The play is a thriller about two students who murder their fellow under-graduate, hide the body in a chest and the proceed to host a party serving food of the chest. It’s not so much a whodunit but more a will they or won’t they get away with it.
Photo of the Day
POTD 11 Jan 2013 : Kaylee Lea (11/365)
Kaylea Lea at Cheeky Glamour Night at Ian’s Studo
This comes from tonight’s “Cheeky Glamour Night” at the studio. It was a candid shot of model Kaylee. I was suggesting a pose to her as part of a “geek style” set and she just giggled and raised her hands to her face. Creating the perfect “family friendly” image. I love the natural expression it gives.
You can see the rest of the shoot here: photos.imb.biz/model/shoot/keyleeglamour but please be warned that some of the images contain nudity.
