Tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event is a mystery…. Rick Bradbury is leading the event but the model is being kept a big secret.
One thing we can be certain of – there will be great shooting, and this will be a really good opportunity to pick up photography tips from Rick. It’s not a formal training session, just a chance to shoot alongside Rick and learn from him as you watch him shoot and then have the chance to put it into practice yourself.
Hi Everyone.. Rick here.
I am in the process of booking the model for this event… it will remain a secret, you will be walking in blind.. this is to challenge you/make you think on your feet. The studio and surrounding areas are our studio! If the weather is good we can take things outside if not we can stay in doors. You will have access to all the lights and kit the studio has to offer plus some of my own or yours if you want to bring it.
Lets get together and make some images happen.
Rick

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:30 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: ££299 or £225
Starting on Wednesday 20th February….. our new studio based training course: The Comprehensive Studio Photography Course.
This six or nine session course will cover all aspects of studio based people photography. Each week we will work with different models to create great images, and learn studio techniques.
- Session 1 : Understanding the light – In this first session we will create dramatic head-shots using a single light source and a large range of different light modifiers. By the end of this session you will understand how to set up a studio light, and what effect each modifier has on the final image we are creating.
- Session 2 : Multiple lights – In this session we create interesting portraits by adding in additional light sources. We look at ratios and metering multiple light sources By the end of the session you will be able to set up multiple lights, and under why and when you need to add an extra light.
- Session 3 : Posing & Fashion – In this session we concentrate on how to pose your subjects. We will also look at how to use grey backgrounds and introduce the use of gels to colour light.
- Session 4 : Photographing men & couples – In this session we work with male and female models. We consider some of the techniques for photographing men and how to pose and light couples.
- Session 5 : Boudoir & Lingerie – using low-key lighting and specially created studio sets we look at different ways to create boudoir images.
- Session 6 : Latex, tatoos and alternative models – in this session you will be encouraged to design and set-up your own lighting to best show off our alternative model.
For the following three sessions the models will be working to nude levels and are therefore optional.
- Session 7 : Glamour – In this session we look at glamour photography. The emphasis will be on hi key lighting set-ups either seamless white or using coloured background papers.
- Session 8 : Art Nude – For this session the emphasis switches to low-key lighting as we consider the creation of art nude images.
- Session 9 : Working with water and other messy substances – for the final session we we look at some of the challenges of working with water and other messy substances such as paint/slime in the studio.
All course participants will receive full printed full printed notes to accompany the course. The notes will cover topics such as posing guidelines, advice on working with models, and sample lighting set-ups.
Additionally each attendee will receive a voucher for 3hrs fee studio hire (worth £50) – to be taken within 6 months of the end of the course. This is your chance to put in to practice all the skill you have learned on the course.

From the Blog…
Rick who?
As you may be aware I’m handing over the next two “Friday Night at the Studio” events to Rick Bradbury to run. Rick regularly runs events at the studio and I know a lot of folks who attend events at the studio will have met him. But for those who haven’t I wanted to use this blog post to give a quick introduction.
Rick is one of the hosts of the “New to Photo” podcast. His area of specialism is portrait photography particularly using strobist techniques and studio lighting. Last year I interviewed Rick for my YouTube videos and you can see two videos with Rick on-line:
I can promise two great evenings at the studio with Rick – if you want to book for them please go to the following event pages:

Woodbank Park in the Snow
Still in catch-up mode. I am surprised I didn’t run into Stuart Smith when I was taking this image as his 365 image for 21st Jan appears to have been taken in the same place… http://www.flickr.com/photos/25796493@N00/8402755606/in/photostream/

POTD 18 Jan 2013 : Tardis in the Snow (18/365)
Tardis in the garden in the snow
Today’s photo of the day was inspired by a comment from a friend on Facebook. Rebecca said: “Looked out of the window and the snow was going up. Awaited TARDIS noise. A few second later look out the window and the snow is going down. Missed my chance again.”
I can’t change the snow direction in the photo. Not enough of it but at least it is a TARDIS in the snow.
