Fellow Photographers,
We have lots of news in this newsletter. Not all of it good. The good news is, of course, the list of great events and models we have lined up at the studio. I particularly want to draw your attention to the two events this weekend: RPS Distinctions Night and Jess Wilcox 4×4
The bad news includes the fact that I have had to delay the pregnancy event with Strawberry Venom by one week due to an accident she had with a kettle of boiling water. Kayleigh and the baby are both fine but we need give her an extra week to ensure the red marks have gone.
The other bit of bad news is the announcement at the end of last week that Focus on imaging has gone. 2013’s event was the very last one.
For more details on all of these items, plus a bowens light for sale and examples of images we will be creating at the ‘projected nudes’ night later this month…. please read on….
Forthcoming Events
Friday, 7 June 2013 – RPS Distinctions Night
Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £12
Something a bit different for this “Friday Night at the Studio” event. I keep getting people asking me what is involved in getting an LRPS or and ARPS from the Royal Photographic Society. At this event I will explain the process. I will show you my LRPS and ARPS panels and provide you with some feedback/critique on any panels you are planing to submit to the society.
This event is a rerun of the RPS distinctions night that I ran a year ago. Those who attended last time found the event very helpful in preparing their submissions.
Please Note: Although I am a member of the RPS and I have an ARPS distinction. I hold no position with the RPS and this session is not authorised by the RPS. The views expressed are my own and are based on lessons I learned while preparing my own images for submission.
Price: £12
Please book via my website: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/rps-distinctions-night-2/
Saturday, 8 June 2013 – Jess Wilcock 4×4
Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 10:00 AM – 7:00 PM
Price: £65
Jess is back! This time she will be modeling for two four hour sessions each of which will be restricted to just four photographers.
Those who attended the two Friday Night events at the studio with Jess will know how popular she and her amazing outfits are. So much so that every time she has come to the studio she has sold out, which has of course put a restriction on the amount of time each photographers gets to shoot. This time with just four photographers shooting for four hours you will get plenty of time to work with Jess.
Jess will be bringing a selection of different looks including steam punk and fantasy.
You can see Jess’s purpleport portfolio here: http://purpleport.com/portfolio/sevensin/?referrer=iansstudio
You have the choice of morning or afternoon session.
The morning session starts at 10.00am, the afternoon session starts at 2.30pm
Price: £65
Please book via my website: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/jess-wilcock-4×4/
Friday, 14 June 2013 – Glamour Girls Night
Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £29
For tonight’s event we will have two experienced glamour models working together for a girl/girl shoot.
The models will be working at different levels from lingerie to nude. While it probably will not be possible to set up the studio shower (as shown in the eFlyer) for this event, we will be able to include an oil & water wet look set. We will also have available the studio smoke machine, and will will get to shoot the models on at least one of the studio room sets.
Details of the models for this event will be announced later.
The price for the this event is a little higher than normal, this reflects the need to book two models both working to nude levels.
In order to run this event I need a minimum of three photographers to book (I don’t anticipate this will be a problem!).
Price: £35
Please book via my website: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/glamour-girls-night/
Monday, 17 June 2013 – Pregnancy Night – With Strawberry Venom
Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £29
At the special MONDAY night event you create classic and contemporary pregnancy images with model Kayleigh (strawberry venom). Kayleigh will be working to a mixture of levels up to art nude levels which will enable us to create some tasteful images using back/rim lighting.
**** NOTE: Tuesday 7th June ****
Kayleigh has suffered burns to her stomach and legs from an accident with a kettle. We are thus rescheduling the event to Monday 17th June, by which stage most of the red marks should have healed *****
At the time of the shoot Kayleigh will be 8 months pregnant. I am expecting this event to be very popular so please book early if you wish to attend.
You can see Kayleigh’s profile on Purestorm here: http://www.purestorm.com/Strawberry_Venom
And some images from past shoot I have done with her here: http://photos.imb.biz/model/strawberryvenom
Please note – Kayleigh has acquired quite a few tatoos since the images on my site were taken!
Price: £29

Friday, 21 June 2013 – Mega Model Night at the Park
Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £12
It’s the longest day of the year so join us for a fun and frantic mega model night… in the park. If you have been to one of our mega model nights before you will know how they work. A group of models working on a “time for images” basis. Photographers and models shoot together one-to-one for twenty minutes. When the whistle blows a different pairings are allocated and we begin again.
Models attending this event will be working on a “time for images” basis and by attending this event you agree to provide the model with images from your shoots.
As we will be outside for this event, you will probably want to bring your own strobist gear to work with. Hopefully, as it is the longest day of the year there will still be some day light to shoot by for most of the event.
I will provide details of the model attending this event shortly.
In the event of wet weather there are a few locations in the park where it is still possible to shoot and remain dry. Also in the event of wet weather the studio can also be used for shoots.
Price (for photographers) : £12
** Any models wishing to attend this event should contact me directly **
Please book via my website: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/mega-model-night-at-the-park/
From the Blog…
News: Losing Focus
I came across two bits of photography news recently which I don’t think have been publicised as much as I think the should have been.
Focus on Imaging is no more. After 24 years the annual event at Birmingham NEC will not be taking place again. 2013 was the last show. You can read the press announcement here:http://www.focus-on-imaging.net/news/?p=1781
I have been a regular at the show for the last 5 or 6 years. I always found it a great show, a chance to see what was new and a chance to get some great deals on kit that I needed to buy. I shall certainly miss it. No doubt something else will come along to take its place but till then I think it’s demise is a great loss to the photography community.
The other bit of news… in case you weren’t aware Adobe have released the beta version of Lightroom 5. Unlike some the previous betas they released the changes are not huge. However there are a couple worth mentioning. Firstly perspective correction has been enhanced and there have been some major improvements for ‘offline working’ where you can create temperary images to enable you to take your catalog ‘on the road’ and still get on with the editing without needing all your storage drives with you. Finally the healing brush has been inproved so you can paint over areas that need to be healed.
You can download the beta from here: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/lightroom5/ – it will expire once the final version is released and you can’t import catalogs from previous version in to the beta.
Videos from adobe about the new features are available on youtube:http://www.youtube.com/Lightroom
For Sale: Bowens 400W head + Modifiers
As you may know the 400W bowens head and octabox at my studio don’t actually belong to me. They belong to fellow photographer and friend Matthew Couper. I have them in the studio on a loan basis. Matt sent me this message recently:
I’d like to sell my studio lights and octobox. I’d like £220 for: Bowens head, Octobox, S ring adapter for the octobox, stand and the barn doors/gels.
I also have a Lastolite Hi Lite background (think it’s 7 x 6 ft – will double check) that I’d be happy to sell on if there’s any interest. It’s the background + vinyl train attachment. Not desperate to get rid of it but will sell if there’s a buyer interested. Just thought I’d mention it in case you knew of anyone who might like one.
The 400W unit is a nice piece of kit, not so bulky as the 500W heads that are my own. I have to say that it has been infinitely more reliable than the 500W heads that I have. Unlike the 500W heads each of which have been back to bowens twice since I opened the studio, I have never had any issues at all with the 400W head which has been at the studio almost since it opened in February 2011. The flash tube was replace on it a little over a year ago.
Please let me know if you are interested in purchasing the kit and I will forward your email on to Matt. I am also happy to let you see/try the kit out at the studio if you need to.
Photo of the Day
POTD 30 May 2013 – Cez_J
Test art nude shoot using a video projector. Model Cez_J
This is a test shot with model Cez_J. We were experimenting with various techniques of creating art nude images by projecting photographs on to both model and background using a video projector.
You can see the full set of results from the test shoot here: http://photos.imb.biz/model/shoot/cez_jand if you want to have a go at creating these types of images Cez will be returning to my studio at the end of the month for a Friday night event. You can find details of that event and or book your place here: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/projected-nudes/
