Fellow Photographers,

Happy New Year… yes this really IS my first newsletter of 2014.

Free CromaKey Software – Offer ends today!!
If you have ever wanted to experiment with green-screen technology sign-up and download PhotoKey 6 Lite. It normally retails at $50 but till the end of today they are giving it away free.  For the download link and a quick review of what it can do take a look at the blog post I’ve included in this newsletter.

Photos of the Day and Sales Reports
If you regularly visit my website or subscribe to my Facebook or Twitter feeds then you will already be away that I am trying to post at least one photograph each day at the moment.  This might be something I have taken recently or a stock photography sale.  With each of these images I am trying to post a ‘back story’ about how the image was created or sold.  There are too many of these to include all of them when I send out the newsletter so please visit the site or make sure you subscribe to my facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/IansStudio) or twitter feed (https://twitter.com/ianbutty).  Someone once described my Photos of the Day as learning photography by osmosis!

Training Courses
I now have three different full length training courses – “Introduction to DSLR Photography“, “Intermediate Photography Course” and the “Comprehensive Studio Course” – I am aware that there are a number of you who are wanting to do these courses, and are simply waiting for me to set the dates.  I will be setting the dates for these multi-session courses in the next 10 days.  If you are hoping to join ANY of those multi-session courses, please can you do me a favour.  Can you drop me an email and let me know which course you are waiting for and if there are any weekday evening to avoid, and whether Sunday afternoons or evenings are possible for you.  What I have discovered in the past is that I have set dates/times and people have said to me that the dates/time I have chosen just don’t work for them.  If I know of problem days I will always do my best to work round them.

We will also look at capturing images of objects smashing as they fall.  If you wish to have a go at creating this type of image please bring along one or two objects that you would like to drop and break.  Eg old tea cups, old ornaments, etc.  The main requirement is that the object will make noise when it hits the ground (or table) when dropped.

Friday, 21 March 2014 – Dance and Movement

Dance and Movement

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £25

Dance model Sarah Mansfield returns to Ian’s studio for an evening of dance and movement photography.  This evening will be a little different to normal as the emphasis will be on the photographic techniques more than the model’s poses.

We will look at the standard techniques for freezing the action and creating motion blur in a studio environment.  We will also look at in-camera multiple exposure techniques such as using using flash guns in ‘multi-strobe’ mode and techniques for combining a blurred image with a frozen image.

The techniques we will look at should be possible with any DSLR.  Not all speedlights have a ‘multi-strobe’ mode so we will use the studio speedlights.  If you want to bring your own speedlite to see if the technique is possible with your equipment.

Price: £25

Please book via my website: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/dance-and-movement/

Free ChromaKey software (Offer expires 4 Feb 2014)

FF0531B-G06849-4

If you have ever wanted to experiment with ChromaKey you might be interested in this free software.  PhotoKey 6 Lite is a basic package which allows you to load in an image shot against a blue or green background and overlay on to a different background

You can download it for free (normally costs $50) from here: https://fxhome.com/photokey/free – but be quick this offer expires TODAY (4th February).  The download process will ask you to tweet or share the link on Facebook before you proceed.  In reality there is nothing stopping you from not clicking the final post button and nothing stopping you from deleting the post or tweet if you really don’t want to endorse a product before you have tried it out.

I downloaded it and gave it a quick try.  For my test I selected two photos one of Laura against a blue background.  Now I must point out that this was not lit for chromakey, the the software did a pretty good job of isolating her from the background.  But it is worth noting that the software only works with blue and green key colours.  I tried a yellow background image and it didn’t work.

Laura Norrey at Vintage/Pin-up Night at Ian's Studio  Harbour boardwalk.

The controls for refining the masking on the foreground are also pretty rudimentary and I couldn’t find any setting that didn’t make Laura foot ever so slightly transparent  When I am keying images like this in photoshop I like to feather the edge just a little it makes the image look slightly less pasted on to the background.  There is no way to achieve this with this software.  What it does have is the ability to colour adjust both background and foreground so that they looks as though they were shot in the same light.

Exporting the image was more of an issue.  I would have liked to have kept the two layers as layers so that I could refine the masking further in photoshop.  This doesn’t appear to be possible.  What is more troubling was the fact that the final exported image has all metadata removed from it.  So captioning, keywording, and most importantly copyright information has all gone.

In summary the results not as good as doing it in photoshop but a lot quicker. I’m guessing that the full (non lite version) will address most of the things lacking from this Lite version.  The product is ok if you need to do a quick masking…and only need to show it a lo-res or screen res, and for that I am happy to pay £0 but I’m not sure I would bother with it at the full price of $50.

Photo of the Day

POTD Sun, 26 Jan 2014: Night track

Footpath near sidings orchard at night

Would you believe that this image was taken at night? It was. Well 5.30pm to be accurate it was very dark. To get this shot it was a 30sec exposure at ISO 640. The white balance was set to cloudy to give a lovely warm glow to the image. The orange sunset effect I believe is the glow of street lights!

POTD Thu, 23 Jan 2014: Coffee House

Barbacans Coffee House, Edgeley, Stockport

On January 23, 1996 the first version of the Java programming language was released. What on earth has this to do with my photo of the day, I hear you cry?

It is an example of how inspiration works. I am trying to set asside time each day to be creative and make at least one photograph. When I have a shoot it is easy, when I don’t I need inspiration, and what I have taken to doing is looking at what happened on this day in history. My reasearch led me to the obscure fact that the Java language is 18 years old today. It has, as they say, become an adult.

So my idea was to get some coffee beens and photograph them as some sort of tribute to the Java language. Now this is the first problem. I don’t drink coffee – can’t stand it – so no beens in the house. Never mind I’ll get some on my travels. I parked up just behind the coffee house in the photo and set off to the supermarket. Walking past the aforementioned building I thought. Coffee house! Coffee houe… java. That’ll do. No need to spend money on beens I’ll never use. Two minutes later I had my shot. And that, folks is how inspiration works. It is a chain or events that starts with a positive step. In this case me researching what happened on this day in history.

Post processing is lightroom initially (exposure brought in to range and verticals adjusted and cropped) and then passed off to HDR efex pro 2.

POTD Wed, 22 Jan 2014: The Olde Vic

The Olde Vic pub in Edgeley

I’m trying to set aside some time each day to actually create an image. I was looking for inspiration this morning and checked a few “this day in history” type websites. Today in 1901 Queen Victoria died.

That gave me my theme. Queen Victoria. Next did I have anything with Victoria on it knocking about the house? Nope no odd Penny Black stamps around. Anything Victoria related in the area? Google reminded me of “The Olde Vic” (formerly the Victoria Vaults) on the corner of Chatham Street in Edgeley. Brilliant I could swing by there easily on my travels.

The pub, like the monach it is named after looks as though it has died. No signs up outside and the exterior looks very much the worse for ware. Although I believe the pub is still operational and inside apparently looks a lot better than the outside.

The image has been processed with Nik Software’s Silver FX Pro to give the BW conversion.
