Fellow Photographers,

I have been spending a lot of time over the Easter break planing future events, workshops and courses at the studio.  And I am have by no means finished!  At the time of writing there 10 different events, workshops and courses on the site, and many more in the planing that I will be adding in the next couple of days.

I want to draw your attention to two items in particular.  Firstly this Friday Night we have hard rock band “Hardtail” coming to the studio for our Hard Rock Photography Night.  Whether you like hard rock or not this is an amazing opportunity to add something very different to your portfolio.  We are going to look at how to create promo images for groups.  We will use lots of different lighting techniques and photograph the guys both as band and as individuals.  I am unlikely to be able to run a similar event to this again for a long time so please don’t miss it.

Also this weekend I start a new run of my Introduction to DSLR photography.  The course will be running on Sunday afternoons from 3pm till 5.30pm.  This course covers the fundamentals, so if you know anyone who is just starting to get to grips with photography please let them know about the course.

For more information about both of those items and to learn about the other events happening at the studio please read on….

Forthcoming Events

Friday, 25 April 2014 – Hard Rock Photography Night

Hard Rock Photography Night

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 7:00 PM
Price: £25

For one night only…. we have rock band Hardtail visiting the studio.  This will be an opportunity to have a go at creating images of both individuals from the band and of the band as a whole.

You can find out more information about Hardtail on their website: http://www.hardtailuk.com/

We will look at lighting techniques to create some mean and moody images.  We will also look at techniques for simulating stage lighting effects in our photographs.

Hardtail have agreed to come to this session on an expenses only basis so we need to provide them with some images from the evening that they can use on their website and in their publicity.  I will let let them have copies of everything I shoot and I know one of the other photographers who is coming will be doing the same.  I would ask everyone who comes to the event to ‘donate’ at least one or two images from the evening to the band.

Price: £25

POTD Sun, 6 Apr 2014: ‘Nuff Said!

Marathon Finisher, shirt and medal

My POTD for the 6th April 2014, could only be one thing… my medal and shirt from the Manchester Marathon. My finish time was not a good as I wanted it to be: 5hrs 12min, but at least I didn’t walk until just before the 21mile mark.

POTD Fri, 28 Mar 2014: Kettle Abrstact

Condensation in a kettle forming an abstract image

For this POTD I decided to create an abstract image using our kettle. We have clear plastic kettle that has a blue glow when it is switched on. When it is near boiling condesation forms on the inside. The orange glow is from tungsten under cupboard lights.

POTD Wed, 26 Mar 2014: If Carlsberg did camera covers…

A camera with a bar towel over it

On my training courses I have often spoken about a technique for protecting your camera in the rain. It involves putting a small face cloth over the camera to protect it from any light rain. I have said that I believed a traditional bar towel would be better as it is just the right width to cover the camera an hang down enough to protect the sides.

Until recently I didn’t have a bar towel. A friend who did one of my courses remembered this and has just given me one to keep in my camera bag. Look who it is made by. So… if Carlsberg did make camera covers…..! (You know the rest of the quote).

POTD Tue, 25 Mar 2014: Tesco Zoom Blur

Didsbury Tesco car park at night

Sometimes I struggle trying to do a photo every day. I struggled with this one. I was out doing some late night shopping at Tesco and decided to take my camera because I hadn’t taken anything for my POTD. I tried a couple of different night shots but it was way past the magic time for night shots and I wasn’t too happy with the results. In the end I went for an abstract image. A zoom blur of the light. It’s OK but not really what I was looking for as my POTD.
