Fellow Photographers,

My featured story for this week’s newsletter is a re-posting of my POTD for 17th Feb 2012.  You may be aware that every day this year I have been posting a photograph taken on that date a number of years previously.  This one is comes from a “Self-portrait night” that I ran at the studio three years ago.  I have also included a link to a video which shows how those caricature self-portraits are created.

Announcements appear to be a common theme this week.  I have three event related announcements:

  • A new event Booted and Suited which Rick Bradbury is running on 6th March
  • The model for The Clear Slime Nude event this Friday has been announced
  • The model for the Art Nude Workshop on 21st March has also been announced

My last two blog posts have been about two announcements in the wider field of photography.

  • Canon have announced the 5Ds camera, and Wex (Warehouse Express) have published a comparison between it and the 5D Mk III – I share my thoughts on the differences.
  • Serif have announced a potential rival to photoshop for the Mac platform

For the full details of each of these and more… please read on…

Forthcoming Events

Friday, 20 February 2015 – Clear Slime Nude

FH0220Z-Z00001

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £29

The main feature of tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event will be creating art nude images involving the use of clear slime.  We will add an unusual twist to our art nude images by adding a texture to the model by the use of the clear slime, combining this with dramatic lighting, and the posing of the model will create some memorable images.

Although working with the slime will be the main feature of the event, it is not practical to shoot images in this way for the whole three hours of the event.  For the first part of the event we will different art nude images using material to enhance the lighting and the model’s pose.

I am pleased to announce that our model for this event will be Callie Louise – you can see her profile here:  http://purpleport.com/portfolio/callielouise/?referrer=ianbutty

The evening will be divided in to three parts.

The first part will be classic low-key art nude work, there will a lot of emphasis on the lighting in this section.  We will be working out which poses and lighting set-ups will work when we add the slime.

The second part and main part of the evening is when we will use the slime. It is a clear slime, the same stuff they use on kids TV shows for gunge. The only difference is that we won’t add any colouring to it. Our model will be completely covered in the stuff by the end of the evening.

The third and final part will be the clean-up, I have the ability to set up a shower in the studio (large paddling pool with shower over the top). This will enable Callie to wash the slime off but at the same time we can shoot shower/wet-look glamour images.

Price: £29

The maximum number of spaces for this event will be seven.

Saturday, 21 February 2015 – Messy Day

FH0221Z-Z00001

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Price: £99

Another of our full-day messy days at the studio.  At this event you have the chance to create photographs or video with a messy theme to them.

Typically at these days there will chances to shoot at least four different messy set-ups and scenarios.  At past events these have included art nude with multicoloured slime, messy diner, messy decorator, game show with forfeits.

The set-ups will be tailored to suit the type of “Wet and Messy” styles the attendees wish to wish to shoot.  It is expected that a significant number of the set-ups will appeal to photographers who enjoy shooting “splosh” / WAM fetish images.

Our model for this event will be Jesse Marie (that’s her in the eFlyer!) you can check out her profile on purpleport here:  http://purpleport.com/portfolio/casinomarie/?referrer=ianbutty

Jesse will be getting messy both fully clothed and fully nude.

Please note that we are working with messy substances at this shoot and it is advisable that photographers wear old clothes, just in case!

Price: £99

A minimum of three photographers is required for this event.  The maximum number of photographers will be limited to just five.

Please book via my website: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/messy-day/

Friday, 6 March 2015 – Booted and Suited

FH0306Z-Z00001

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £

This event will be led by Rick Bradbury.  We will be working with a male model.  The looks will range from suited and booted through to more casual ware.

During this event we will also look at type/styles of light that can be used with male models as well as poses.

You will have plenty of time to shoot and Rick Bradbury be on hand to answer any questions and set lighting.

A lot of events tend to use female models so let’s change that up and add to your portrait experience.

Charge your batteries and clean that lens… let’s shoot.

The model for the event will be MattS – http://purpleport.com/portfolio/matts/

Price: £27

Please book via my website: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/booted-and-suited/

Saturday, 21 March 2015 – Art Nude Workshop

FH0321Z-Z00001

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Price: £82

At this workshop will look at a number of basic art nude set-ups.  Including single light set-ups to multi light set-up.  Each lighting set will be documented in the printed notes that accompany the workshop.

The day will be suitable for those who are a little unsure about where to start with art nude photography; but time will be built into the day to enable more experienced photographers to build on these set-ups.

We will look at some basic techniques to bring out the best in the subject you are photographing, including how to put your subject at their ease.  These techniques are particularly use for anyone wishing to expand their boudoir photography business to include offering art nude shoots to their clients.

I am pleased to announce that the model for this event will be Vivi Blue – http://purpleport.com/portfolio/sellers/?referrer=ianbutty – Viv is a very experience art nude model and she describes art nude as her favourite genre.

There will be opportunities to create high-key (white background) images, low-key (black background) images and bodyscape images.  A large selection of props will be available to enhance the images and to help inspire you with ideas.

Cost £82 per person (this includes lunch and printed notes).

From the Blog…

[Blog] New Photo Editing Software for Mac Users

Adobe Photoshop has had a monopoly in quality photo editing software for years.  It looks like that monopoly might be being challenged…. at least for Mac Users.

Graphics software company Serif have recently announced a new professional standard image editing product.  It is called:  Affinity Photo.  The website for the product can be found here: https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/photo/

Affinity brand graphic

I am not a Mac user, so I have not been able to test the software out myself but the promo video on the above website does look very impressive.  There is a beta program available which I believe is free to sign up for.

Will Affinity be better than photoshop?  I don’t know.  But I for one certainly welcome the competition into the market place.  This might be the thing that will push Adobe to have a more customer centric attitude and may cause the price of editing software to fall dramatically.

Serif already have “Affinity Designer” which is their answer to Illustrator and look at the price tag – just £39.99 – so if Affinity Photo, does have all the features of Photoshop and if it comes out at a similar price, then there is likely to be a big move of people over to it.  Especially those who don’t like having to pay for their software each and every month.  That in turn might force Adobe to reduce their prices – especially in the UK where we tend to pay a lot more than US customers do.

Affinity Photo is definitely one to keep an close eye – it is just a shame that there is no windows version available – nor is one planned.

[Blog/Link] Canon 5DS vs 5D Mk III

Wex Photographic have posted a really useful table showing the differences between the Canon 5D Mk III and the new 5DS.  Click the image or link below to see it.

http://www.wexphotographic.com/blog/canon-eos-5ds-vs-5d-mark-iii-22-key-differences?cm_mmc=Facebook-_-Wexfacebook-_-blog-_-canon-eos-5ds-vs-5d-mark-iii-22-key-differences

Having looked at the table – I’m quite happy to stick with my 5D Mk III – For me the older model wins out on a number of key areas – ISO, frames per second and battery life, not to mention the fact that you cans capture more images largely due to the fact that they are not silly Megapixels in size.

Yes, there are some nice improvements, such as the built in intervalometer, the fact that the autofocus points will now light up in AI servo mode.  But these are minor not worth the price tag.

Stock Sales

For those who are interested in Stock Photography here’s some information about some of the strange and not so strange sales that I have made.

SALE 26 Apr 2005: Statue of Saint Peter in front of the Papal balcony

Statue of Saint Peter in front of the Papal balcony in Piazza San Pietro (Saint Peter’s Square) Rome

NUMBER OF SALES TO DATE: 1
SOLD VIA: Alamy
LICENCE: Rights Managed

When I visited Rome the weather was really bad. Rain and horrible white skies. Under such circumstances one of the tricks is to concentrate on details and to keep the white sky out of the shot. Other images in the same set as this shot show people walking in the rain. By careful composition I have created an image that still sold via Alamy despite the conditions it was taken in.
