[PHOTONEWS] Part One: What’s On

Fellow Photographers,

It had been my intention for this week’s newsletter to contain an in-depth feature on the newly release Lightroom CC (aka Lightroom 6).  However as I started writing that feature I realised that I had too much to say about Lightroom to go in my regular weekly newsletter.  Especially as I have some other important news to share this week as well.

As a result I am holding back my feature on Lightroom and concentrating on the other news today.  I will send out a second newsletter later this week which will be almost entirely about Lightroom and the changes in the new version.

So what is the other news?  Well to put it simply I have been asked to do some more lecturing on a cruise ship later this year.  It will be a 34 night voyage that will take me to four countries the Netherlands, France, Canada and Ireland.  The vast majority of the time being in Canada.  This means I am having to make some fairly major changes to my programme of studio events, workshops and courses.  Additionally I have just added two new events that will be taking place this coming weekend.

So for more information about the changes please read on…

Programme Changes

This weekends events

Two new events added to the calendar and a special free event for bank holiday Monday.

Friday night we will be shooting stobist-style in at our “Springtime in the Park” event.

Sunday afternoon model Rosie Eliot and photographer Rick Bradbury are running a 4hr Charity Group Shoot.

Bank Holiday Monday – I am running my FREE 120:20 Challenge in Manchester city centre – this event is suitable for photographers of all levels and all cameras from camera phones to DSLRs.

Change of Course

The cruise I am lecturing on partially clashes with the original dates for the “In-Depth Art Nude Course” that I was planing to run in the autumn.  Because I have had a lot of interest in that course I have decided to bring it forward and it will now start it’s 6 week run on Sunday 31st May.  This has regrettably meant postponing the Comprehensive Studio Course.

Lecturing on the cruise has also meant that I need to change the date for a few other autumn events – these have temporarily disappeared from the calendar, but they will be reappearing with new dates later this week.

Forthcoming Events

This Friday night we will be heading down to Vernon park to do some strobist photography.  Meet at the studio at 7pm and we will walk down to the park (just 2 minutes down the road).

This is planed to be a relaxed shoot, concentrating on lighting and how the model’s interaction with the park environment.

As the light fades we will probably return to the studio for our final set.  If the weather is more wintertime than springtime we will do the bulk of our shooting in the studio.

Rosie Eliot says….

Come along to Ian’s Studio, Stockport for a fun afternoon of shooting, all in aid of a great cause!

As a Miss Manchester Finalist, I am challenged to raise money for humanitarian charity ‘Beauty with a Purpose.’ Myself and Rick Bradbury are hosting a 4 hour shoot at Ian’s Studio in Stockport.
Details:
It costs just £35 to attend.
The event is taking place on the 3rd of May, 4-8pm
To book your place please email me at rosie@ians-studio.co.uk

As the Miss Manchester final is just 5 days after the shoot, I will be wearing my full final attire.
I will be shooting fashion levels including; LA inspired daywear (with an eco-friendly/vintage theme), Sportswear, and a glamourous evening look. I will be making changes to my makeup and hair between each outfit change. This is a great opportunity to shoot with me in outfits and styles I don’t usually work in and a fantastic portfolio builder for everyone involved.

More info about ‘Beauty with a Purpose’:

Beauty with a Purpose was created by Julia Morley in 1972. It is at the heart of Miss World.
Hundreds of millions of pounds have been raised and donated to local and international organisations in aid of disadvantaged children the world over.

Variety, The Children’s Charity, for example, has been closely associated with Beauty with a Purpose for many years.
Other causes to have benefited from Beauty with a Purpose include the funding for Cleft Palate Teams in South America, Sri Lanka and Russia, three fundraising tours to support abandoned and neglected children in Vietnam, long term support for both Operation Hunger and the Nelson Mandela Foundation in Africa, and teaming up with Jackie Chan and the Chinese Red Cross in bringing financial aid to those most seriously affected by the Asian tsunami.

Monday, 4 May 2015 – 120:20 Challenge: Manchester

FH0504Z-Z00001

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 1:30 PM – 4:30 PM
Price: £ Free

Are you up to the challenge?  It doesn’t matter what camera you use – it can be anything from a phone to a DSLR.

You have exactly two hours 120mins.  All you have to do is take 20 photographs.  But here’s the catch:  There must me no duplicate images.  No retakes.  No deletions.  The twenty images must be consecutive frames.  At the end of the challenge you must show all twenty images.

The challenge isn’t easy.  You have an average of 6 minutes per shot, including getting between the locations you are going to shoot.  The challenge makes you think about each and every frame you take.  Check your settings and your composition before hitting the shutter release.

I am organising this free event in Manchester.  Meet at the fountains in Albert Square (in front of the Town Hall).

Even though there is no charge for his event I would appreciate it if you can book via my website just so that I know how many people are going to be coming.

I’m going to try to arrange somewhere for us to go and have a drink and a chat afterwards… and so we can look at what we have each photographed.

Sunday, 31 May 2015 – In-Depth Art Nude Course

FH0930Z-Z00002

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
Price: £299

This six session course covers all the essential techniques you need to create great studio based art nude images.  In each session we will work with a different art nude model.  The course runs on Sunday Afternoons starting on 31st May 2015.

Over the course of the six weeks we will look at the following:

  • Lo-key (black background)  – including one-light and sandwich lighting set-ups
  • Grey background work – with a greater emphasis on the way the model poses
  • Bodyscapes and body parts
  • Working with props
  • Silhouettes
  • Erotic nude

No previous experience of studio work is required.

In order to give participants the opportunity of working with different models on different techniques, rather than spending a whole session on one of the above topics, we will look at three topics each session, returning to some of them multiple times throughout the course.  This will give you the chance to photograph each model in three different lighting set-ups.

In each session we will introduce two or three new lighting set-ups.  Each lighting set-up will be fully documented with lighting diagrams, behind the scene shots and example images.  So that you can use the notes to recreate the set-ups in the future.

In order to improve your studio skills, course participants will be encouraged to help set-up lights and backgrounds.

The course requires a minimum of FOUR photographers to run at the advertised price.  The maximum number of photographers on this course will be seven.

Price: £299

POTD Sat, 25 Apr 2015: Runaway Bride

Introduction to Wedding Photography Workshop with model Elisa

I was running the “Introduction to Wedding Photography” workshop today (25 Apr 2015). After a morning talking about the stage-management side of shooting a wedding. (ie How to organise everything etc), model Elisa came in the afternoon and we went out in to the park to shoot some example wedding images. We managed to finish the planned shoot a little earlier than expected so we finished off with a few ‘runaway bride’ images.

You can see the rest of the images from the event here: http://photos.imb.biz/shoot/wedding2015

Stock Sales

For those who are interested in Stock Photography here’s some information about some of the strange and not so strange sales that I have made.

SALE 22 Jun 2005: An Arab Trader on top of Gebil Musa, Mount Sinai. Egypt

An Arab Trader on top of Gebil Musa, Mount Sinai. Egypt

NUMBER OF SALES TO DATE: 1
SOLD VIA: Alamy
LICENCE: Rights Managed

An Arab trader on top of Mount Sinai. For once I actually found out exactly who bought this image, and how it was used. It was bought by and published in “The Lonely Planet Guide to Egypt”. That is quite an honour as Lonely Planet guides don’t tend to include may photographs.

Not only that but one of the other images (two stone coffin lids in Tanis) in the same guide was also one of mine.
