Fellow Photographers,
Welcome to this week’s newsletter.  Out featured story this week is a lighting set-up for studio photographers.  It is a very simple set up that creates very striking results.  I am also making available a downloadable PDF that you can print out and keep for future reference for when you are next working in a studio.I’d like to mention some forthcoming events.  Firstly, this Friday Strawberry Venom makes a return to the studio.  Newly added to the calendar this week is Splash, Bang, Wallop – another of our popular table top nights.  This time concentrating on bursting balloons and water splashes.

Add to this the usual selection of photos of the day, stock sales and a blog post about photography in North Korea and we have a bumper newsletter….

so…. please read on….

[BLOG] Studio Lighting – Beauty dish along the wall

I wanted to share with you a lighting set up that I have known and used in the past but until now had not documented.  I call it “beauty dish along the wall”

Beauty Disk - shoot along wall
This simple one light set-up create the effect of light coming in from a high up window.  The light from the beauty dish is allowed to spill on to the wall to create a funnel of light that can be seen in the final image.

Note that the subject needs to face towards the light to ensure that the face is correctly illuminated.

Without changing the position of the light this set up can create two different lighting effects the first has the subject standing/leaning against the wall close to the beauty dish.  The for the second effect the subject moves further away from the light but then crouches down or sits on the floor.  As the subject moves away from the light you will need to either increase the light output, or open up your aperture for this version of the lighting set-up.

Forthcoming Events

Friday, 8 May 2015 – Friday Night Venom

FH0508Z-Z00001

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £29

Model Strawberry Venom is returning to the studio for a night of tattoos and art nude.

It has been a while since Strawberry Venom has been modelling at Ian’s Studio.  During that time she has acquired even more tattoos. The emphasis tonight will be on creating art nude images which show off those tattoos.

Even if you are not normally a fan of working with heavily inked models you will not be disappointed when shooting Strawberry Venom as she has a unique ability to create poses that no other model can come close to.

You can find her profile on purpleport:  http://purpleport.com/portfolio/strawberryvenom/?referrer=ianbutty

Price £29

Please book via my website: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/friday-night-venom/

Saturday, 9 May 2015 – Night Photography Workshop

FH0309Z-Z00001

Location: Christ Church Woodford
Time: 5:30 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £45

Christ Church Woodford has a very atmospheric churchyard, which we have permission to use for this event.

(Please note: Ian’s Studio occasionally hires Christ Church Woodford to run photography events.  Christ Church Woodford is not associated with Ian’s Studio)

The event will start with a short tutorial on night time photography, including painting with light techniques, day for night and strobist techniques.  As the light fades we will have the opportunity to practice the techniques involved in balancing the fading daylight with artificial light.

Location.  Christ Church Woodford, Chester Road, Woodford, Stockport. SK7 1PR (View Map).

Throughout the evening you will be able to work on your own images at your pace using the atmospheric church yard and the model(s).  Alternatively work with other photographers sharing ideas and techniques.  For those who need it I will be offering practical advice in small groups and one-to-one through out the event.

Once it is completely dark we will use painting with light techniques and multiple off-camera flash techniques.

Depending on the number of photographers booking to come we will have at least one model and probably two available to add ‘human interest’ into the atmospheric images we will be producing.  If we have a large number of photographers booking for this event additional models will be booked.

Printed notes detailing the techniques will be supplied and snacks / tea & coffee will be available throughout the event

This is the seventh time I have run a night photography event at Woodford and each time the event has proven to be very popular.

In addition to your camera for this event you will need to bring a tripod and a torch.  If you have an external flash gun, wireless flash triggers, and portable lighting stands you may wish to bring those as well.  I will have spare wireless triggers, flash guns, stands and even a spare tripod or two that can be borrowed on the night.  So if you don’t have your own don’t let that put you off booking for this event.

Our lead model for this event will be announced shortly.

The church has very kindly given us permission to run this event in the ground of the church and participants are asked to be respectful, both when walking round the graveyard and also when composing images.

Price £45.00 per person

A deposit of £20 is required to secure a place.

Please book via my website: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/night-photography-workshop-2/

You will need a tripod for this event.  If you have one please bring it along.  If you don’t I have a few spare tripods at the studio that you can borrow for the evening.

Price £20

From the Blog…

BLOG: A different world

I don’t usually just post links to my website or to my newsletter.  But this link is worth a visit.

http://www.sliptalk.com/eric-lafforgue/

Photographer Eric Lafforge visited North Korea and managed to photograph aspects of that country which we do not normally see.  The images are not only top examples of what travel photography should be, but an amazing insight into that country.  What did Eric get for his efforts?  He has been banned from ever visiting the country again.  Why?  Because every image in the display is an image that the regime did not want to be shown to the outside world.  The specific reasons given under each image make for fascinating reading.

Photo of the Day

FOUR YEARS AGO TODAY…

It is the day of the Royal Wedding. I organised a “trash the dress” shoot at the studio under the title of “An antidote to the Royal Wedding”. During the day we photographed our model climbing various structures oustide the studio and finished going down to the river as you can see here. The full set of images from the shoot can be found here: http://photos.imb.biz/model/shoot/royalttd
