Inspiration Sheet: Bokeh


Christmas lights are all around! This makes this time of year an excellent time to look at the topic of bokeh.

Bokeh is the term photographers used for the big out of focus blobs of light usually in the background of an image. I say usually in the background – they can also be in the foreground of an image. More about that inside!

The word is a Japanese word which literally means ‘blur’ or ‘haze’ but depending on context it can also mean a mental haze or senility.

So just be aware if someone says “your images show a fantastic example of bokeh” it might not be the compliment you think it is!
