Every Christmas I run a free event at the studio to say thank you to everyone who has supported the studio over the past year.  It is a time to meet with other photographers share images that we have taken during the year and enjoy a mince pie and a drink.  This event will be free for both Academy Members and non-members – however, until 2nd December, I am making booking exclusive to Academy Members, after that date bookings will be open to everyone.

Bring along a selection of images you have created this year (please include something you have taken as a result of attending one of the studio events, workshops or courses).

You can bring images as prints or as digital files which we will display via a laptop and video projector.  You can also email/dropbox images to me ahead of the event to save time loading them on to the laptop.  I recommend a maximum of 5 images person (we may only get to critique 3 or 4 depending on the number of people attending).

Too often in the studio we just roll out the seamless paper backgrounds.  For this Friday Night at the Studio event, we will spend the whole evening shooting without using seamless paper backgrounds.  We will have available as possible backgrounds studio walls, mini sets, Venetian blinds, wallpaper and painted backgrounds, the studio floor and even softboxes.

Sin in the City will be a film noir  inspired shoot, you will work preferably monochrome (we will show you ways of doing that in-camera) or featuring one colour (red etc) will be great for photographers looking to shoot Silhouettes, Lighting and Shadow creation (horizontal/shutter blind effect) and in editing images could be used in a Film Noir style poster or as stand alone images.

The second of two studio events that were suggested by the models who will be posing for us and then voted on by members of the “Ian’s Studio”  Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/iansstudio/).

Snakes on a Nude – will be exactly as the name suggests – the chance to shoot art nude images of Rhianna Grey, posing with a number of different sized snakes.

This event was suggest by model: Rhianna Grey (http://purpleport.com/portfolio/rhiannagrey/?referrer=ianbutty).  Rhianna is popular model who has worked at Ian’s studio on many occasions.  This will be her first time posing with snakes at the studio.  Her comment on hearing that this event was voted as one of the wining events speaks for itself:
        “I cannot tell you how bleeding excited I am about this! Weeeee!!! I’ve waited two years to do this lol! This is going to be the best shoot ever!”

This week’s Friday Night at the Studio event will be an evening with model ImperfectRose.  ImperfectRose has been to the studio on a number of occasions in the past when she modeled under the name “SoftGentle”

This event will be an opportunity to create images with an edge to them as Ms Rose will be bringing along some of her fetish outfits.  She is also willing to shoot at all her published levels up to fully nude.  If you have any particular ideas, or styles of image you would like to work on please let me know in advance so that I can discuss them to ensure we have the appropriate props, outfits and lighting available.

At tonight’s event, we will look at a number of classic table-top set-ups.  These include how to photograph smoke patterns, capturing water splashes, techniques for photographing food and also at least on special effects set-up.

Other than a tripod (and you can borrow one of the spare studio tripods if you need to) you don’t need any special equipment to create these images, and you should be able to recreate the techniques you learn this evening in your own home.

STOP PRESS:  I have permission to use the space in Rick Bradbury to use the space in his studio (over the corridor from mine) so I have been able to extend the maximum number of people I can have at this event to 12.

Models and real life couple Erin and Matt, come to the studio this evening for a couple shoot with a Calvin Klein twist to it.  Because Erin and Matt are a couple in real life, we can expect their posing to have a real connection and intensity.

Both models have been to Ian’s studio in the past.  Matt was the model for our Heroes last month, and Erin visited recently for a portfolio building session.  You can find images from those shoots here:

Both models will be working from clothed through topless/shirtless to implied nude for this event.

As an added bonus, I have arranged an additional ‘after hours’ session from 10pm till 11pm for those photographers, who wish to shoot something a little different in a couples shoot.  Erin and Matt are both experienced fetish models and they will be bringing some of their fetish gear to the studio.  The extra hour is optional and costs and additional £10 per photographer.

Please Note:  Maximimum numbers for photographers is, as always, seven.  Due to the increased costs in booking two models, the minimum number of photographers needed for the event to take place is three.  We also need at least two photographers to book for the ‘after hours’ session for that to take place.

The theme for tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event will be Goths and Gothic, think dark and moody, and a model with attitude!

I am pleased to announce that our model for this event is Miss Twisted.  Miss T is an experienced goth model with a number of different but dark looks.  Her goth image is enhanced by a number of tattoos and for this shoot she will be working to lingerie levels (for the last set of the evening) to enable photographers to photograph the tattoos.

Tonight is all about turning an idea in to art. I have two concepts, neither of which I have shot before.  The purpose of tonight is show how we take an idea, work with a model, design the lighting and end up creating some artistic photographs that we can be proud of.

The two ideas/concepts for the evening are as follows

• Cover  a nude model with powder paint to create a speckled pattern.  After photographing this we will add drops of water to convert the powder paint into runs of colour over the body of the model.
• Cover or partially cover the model in clay, to create an earthy creature look.  Hopefully the clay will begin to dry and become cracked on the model’s skin to give opportunities for some interesting body part and bodyscape images.

We will be working with Rhianna Grey, an experienced art nude model who will be able to provide poses which will work with our two concepts.

At tonight’s event will be shooting images which are suitable for submission to photographic libraries.  The aim will be to create photographs that tell a story.

Examples of the type of images we will be working on might be a business woman with a determined look on her face ripping up a contract.  A woman home might be sitting an arm chair worried about the bills she is surrounded by.  A woman in PJs might be curled up on the sofa with a TV remote, a box of tissues watching the latest weepy movie.

The theme for tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event is “Model Splash” we will be looking at different styles of model photography that incorporate water splashes as part of the image.  This will include capturing the splash as water is poured into the models hands, on to the model’s head, and well as creating images with the model pouring water on herself and even capturing having a drink thrown at her.

For tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event we have model and fashion designer MizXara coming to the studio.  This will be a great opportunity to photograph her modelling her own creations include at least one of her catsuits.You can see MizXara’s profile on Purpleport here:

Because the catsuit outfits are crying out to be used in a gritty location one of the lighting and background set-ups tonight will be designed to make the image of MizXara easy to composite into another background.  If you already have a background in mind into which you wish to add our catwoman then please bring it with you and if possible we will try to match the lighting and angles for your composition.

Our Friday Night at the Studio events are back on Friday nights!  Or theme this week is all about photographing men with strong poses and dramatic lighting.

We will be working with an established male model (details to be announced shortly) who will be our ‘hero’ for the evening.  We will look a different lighting techniques, including those to enhance the physique and those that introduce drama by the use of shadows.

As a bonus, a post processing ‘after hours’ session will be available this evening.  For those who want to stay, Ian will load some of the images from tonight’s shoot into Adobe Lightroom and walk you through some of the techniques he uses to add the extra dramatic look to the images.

Model Rachael F has had a very special piece of body art created.  This is not only a chance to photograph her new tattoo but a chance to photographer her in a way a very different style to normal.

For the first part of the evening you have the chance to create images of Rachael in her usual dark style.  Next we will go all high-key.  Rachael has been challenged by Ian’s Studio to come up with an all white look – those who have worked with Rachael before will know white is not her normal choice of ‘colour’, so this is a unique opportunity to shoot her is a very different way.

The final set of the evening will be your chance to photograph the tattoo – during this final set Rachael will be working to implied topless levels.The maximum number of photographers will be 7.

This event was postponed from January

A little over a year ago, model Karen R, came to the studio for a very special event which enabled photographers to create their own posing guides for Art Nude photography.  That event was a sell out and the result of it was that each photographer went away with a catalog of approximately 40 different poses which they could refer to at any future art nude shoot they were working on.

Karen is coming back to the studio to enable us to add more images to the posing guide.  The aim is not to repeat any poses from the previous shoot, so if you came last time this is a chance to extend your posing guide.  If you were not able to come last time – don’t panic – everyone who books for the event this time will receive a copy of the posing guide I created with Karen at the first shoot.

Myself, model Karen (and the event attendees, if they wish) will bring along ideas and possibly images showing example poses.  Each of these poses will be recreated by the model and each photographer will get the opportunity to photograph the pose. Everyone will get to shoot each pose in turn before we move on to the next pose.

This week’s event sees model Naomi S return to the studio.  For tonight’s event Naomi is going to be putting on her clown face and demonstrating her circus skills.  The challenge for us will be to capture not only the juggling and spinning plates but also to create images which capture the clown character too.

The evening will be divided into three sections.  In the first section we will use bright lighting and colourful backgrounds to capture a happy, jolly clown.  In the second section by only changing the lighting, posing and possibly props, we will transform our happy clown into some much more sinister.  The third and final section will be all about how we photograph circus skills.

Working with model Kayleigh Dawson, we look at the skills required to create great full-length and 3/4 length portraits.  We will look at a number of different lighting set-ups and different techniques for posing your model.  We will look at simple high-key lighting and effective low-key lighting.

We will look at different ways to add motion into the images so that our full length images have a dynamic element to them.

For tonight’s event we welcome Zoe Page back to the studio.  Zoe last came to the studio for our “simply nude” event in October.  At that event she mentioned that she happened to have a lot of 1940’s 1950’s vintage outfits.  So I invited her back, so that this time we can photograph her with some clothes on!

The stile will be a mix of vintage and vintage styled pin-up.

Working with an established glamour model, tonight’s event will give you the chance to shoot glamour images on three different room sets at the studio.  These will be the boudoir set, the office set and either the lounge or bedroom set.

This week’s Friday Night at the Studio event will be one of our popular water based table top nights.  A number of set-ups will be available, including:

In tonight’s session we are going to look at how to create images using light stencils.  In addition to a short tutorial on how to create your own stencils we will work inside and possibly outside the studio to create some weird and wonderful images images by combining simple strobist techniques with light stencils.

Here’s the images I am planning…

Geeky girl with with game controller surrounded by space invaders in front and behind her floating in the air. Goth surrounded by light bats.  Hippy chick with butterflies and flowers made of light.  And all these will be done in camera!!

You will need to bring with you.  A tripod… we will be doing long exposures.  One or more speedlights.

If you can also bring one or more shoe boxes with lids, kitchen foil, and a craft knife it will help.  If you don’t have any of those don’t panic I will have supplies and things you can borrow.  If you bring your own shoe box you can take your full light stencil away with you at the end of the evening.  Without it you will be able to take away the stencil but not the box to use with (I only have a limited number of she boxes!)

For tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event the theme will be pin-up.  Working with an established pin-up model we will create some classic pin-up images.

Gabi was last at the studio for our popular Silhouettes Night in April this year. Gabi informs me that she has an: “Infinate amounts of pin up stuff” (!)

This one day training event will teach how to create wet-look glamour images and to add rain effects and lightning effects in Photoshop.

During the morning we will spend 3hours in the studio working with a models to create the wet-look glamour images which will be the basis of our completed shots.

During this time you will learn how to set up the lights needed to create the effects.  You will learn some of the tricks employed to create wet-look images, including how to make the water droplets more visible, and how to control where the water goes.  The session is a practical session and you will have plenty of opportunity to take photographs.

Please note: due to the nature of some of the images and techniques being demonstrated at this event the model(s) will be posing topless for some of the shots.  If this is likely to cause offence please do not book to come on this course.

After lunch (which is included in the price of the course) we go into a tutorial session where you will be shown how to use Photoshop to add digital rain and digital lightning effects to the images we created during the morning session.   If you have a laptop with Photoshop on it you are welcome to bring it with you and follow the tutorials as we go through them.  Alternatively you can sit back, watch and then try out the techniques at your leisure at home.  Either way you will be provided with printed notes on how to achieve the effects and a CD with a video screencast showing you the steps for both digital rain and digital lightning.

We often think of glamour as being about beautifully posed images and precisely posed images. It is true that glamour photography is all about making our subject appear sexually attractive. But when most people find things like sense of humour, and laughter just as attractive, if not more so than looks.

In tonight’s session we will be concentrating on how to capture personality, laughter, humour, and fun in our glamour images.

Have you ever wanted to learn more about studio photography but were a bit scared to have a go?  Ever felt over-whelmed by the range of events and workshops that are on offer at the studio?  Following on from the sucess of the taster day in 2014 we will be running it again in 2015.  This day is designed to give you a taster of the different types of workshops and training that we offer.

There will be two different 3hrs sessions.  Each session will highlight different aspects of studio photography work. What we cover in each session will be short extracts of the training given in different workshops that we offer at the studio.  

In the morning session we will look at:

• Pin-up

In the afternoon session we will look at:

• Lingerie / Boudoir
• Glamour
• Art Nude

Printed notes and lighting diagrams will be provided for all the topics and set-ups that we cover during the taster day.

If you have never shot in a studio before and don’t know what to expect, there is nothing to worry about.  All you need to bring is your camera and yourself.  Most people shoot with DSLRs but so long as as your camera has a hot-shoe and the ability to work in manual mode you will be fine.  Durring the two sessions I take the time to explain all the settings you will need on your camera and also how we set-up and meter the lights.  This will also be covered in the printed not supplied at the workshop.

Liam Golden had been booked by a photographer I was doing a one-to-one training session with.  I was impressed with Liam as a model and his ability to create images which have an impact to them.  Especially when lit with rim lighting or lighting across the body.  I decided to book him for a Friday Night at the Studio event so that you too could have the opportunity to work with him.

Join us for an evening working with model Jess (aka Softgentle) which explore the use of bright and bold colours.  Jess will be working at a mix of levels up to nude.

The outfits that Jess will be bringing will include a pini-up swimsuit and a pink fetish outfit.  We will also be shooting some art nude images using of gelled lights to add colour to the image.

Join us for another of our popular table top nights.  Tonight we will be using the studio audio and laser trigger system to create images such as splashes and bursting of balloons.

We will also look at creating images where an object passes through a laser beam to trigger a the flash.

In Ian’s studio, there will be opportunities to shoot art nude and lingerie styles, while over in Rick’s studio there will be opportunities to shoot fashion and beauty styles.  Both models will move between the two studios and will be shooting all styles.  At the end of the day there will be opportunities to shoot both models together in in both studios.

Ian and Rick will be on hand to offer guidance and advice on shooting and studio lighting.

If anyone doesn’t want to shoot nude or lingerie styles, you are welcome to come to just shoot fashion and beauty in Rick’s studio.  You will still get to work with both models.  If this does apply to you please let us know so that we can ensure that Rick’s studio remains a nudity free area.

For anyone who is not aware Ian’s Studio and RJBradbury Photography are in the same building and the entrances to the studio are directly opposite each other off the same entrance hall.  So going between the two studio couldn’t be easier.

Tea and coffee will be available in both studio, but you will need to bring your own pack lunch.

Because we have two studio’s operating, the minimum and maximum number are doubled.  The minimum number for the event will therefore be six photographers and the maximum will be fourteen.

Another of our full-day messy days at the studio.  At this event you have the chance to create photographs or video with a messy theme to them.

Typically at these days there will chances to shoot at least four different messy set-ups and scenarios.  At past events these have included art nude with multicoloured slime, messy diner, messy decorator, game show with forfeits.

The set-ups will be tailored to suit the type of “Wet and Messy” styles the attendees wish to wish to shoot.  It is expected that a significant number of the set-ups will appeal to photographers who enjoy shooting “splosh” / WAM fetish images and/or video.

It happens to all of us.  We are in the middle of a shoot and suddenly we hit “photographers block” – what do we shoot next?  In this session we will look at a technique for working through this.

The technique is relatively straight forward we use props and working with the model we photographically brainstorm ideas.  Then we review the images and pick one or two ideas to develop further.I have quickly shown this technique to photographers at various works shops and the feedback from them is that they have all found it very helpful.

At this session we will look at the concept more fully.  Not only will this help you push through photographers block, but you will go away from the evening with images that are unique to you and that no-one else in the group has shot.

In our recent survey I asked photographers to rate the different types of events that they were interested in – the top two photography events were “strobist techniques” and “art nude” – this event is in two parts the first is in the studio and concentrates on art nude photography.  After a break we head off into the local park to work on fashion and portraiture photography using strobist techniques.

Come to to the studio to learn the basics of studio portraiture.  No previous studio experience is necessary at this three hour session you will learn a number of techniques for creating studio portraits.  You will learn several different lighting set-ups and we will use a simple step by step technique for ensuring that the studio lights give the effect you are looking for in your portraiture lighting.The event is idea for anyone who is new to shooting in a studio as we assume no prior knowledge of studio work.  If you have been to group shoots before and had someone else set-up the lighting for you but never really understood how or why the lights were places where they were, this is your chance to learn the why and how.

Lighting diagrams will be provided for all the set-ups we work on throughout the evening so you will be able to recreate the lighting in the future.

For tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event we will be looking at techniques for creating so called ‘levitation’ style images.  These are images where a person appears to be floating in mid air.

At tonight’s event we will look at a number of classic table-top set-ups.  These include how to photograph smoke patterns, capturing water splashes, techniques for photographing food and also at least on special effects set-up.

Other than a tripod (and you can borrow on of the spare studio tripods if you need to) you don’t need any special equipment to create these images, and you should be able to recreate the techniques you learn this evening in your own home.

For tonight’s event we will be working with an experienced glamour model using the studio’s “red room” set-up.  The set, and the props will be red, the outfits will be red or nothing!

Not sure whether it is worth upgrade to the new version of Lightroom?  And if you are going to upgrade do you want to go with the CC version or the boxed LR6?

If you want to get to understand what has changed in the new version of Lightroom and want to make informed choices about upgrading coming along to this half day workshop where I will go through the details of what it probably the biggest change to Lightroom since it was first released.

The workshop is aimed at those who have an existing working knowledge of the product.  You don’t need to be an expert.  We will concentrate on the areas which have changed but almost certainly we will look at some of the features that have been there in previous versions.

Model Strawberry Venom is returning to the studio for a night of tattoos and art nude.

It has been a while since Strawberry Venom has been modelling at Ian’s Studio.  During that time she has acquired even more tattoos. The emphasis tonight will be on creating art nude images which show off those tattoos.

Even if you are not normally a fan of working with heavily inked models you will not be disappointed when shooting Strawberry Venom as she has a unique ability to create poses that no other model can come close to.

Are you up to the challenge?  You have exactly two hours 120mins.  All you have to do is take 20 photographs.  But here’s the catch:  There must me no duplicate images.  No retakes.  No deletions.  The twenty images must be consecutive frames.  At the end of the challenge you must show all twenty images.

The challenge isn’t easy.  You have an average of 6 minutes per shot, including getting between the locations you are going to shoot.  The challenge makes you think about each and every frame you take.  Check your settings and your composition before hitting the shutter release.

The main feature of tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event will be creating art nude images involving the use of clear slime.  We will add an unusual twist to our art nude images by adding a texture to the model by the use of the clear slime, combining this with dramatic lighting, and the posing of the model will create some memorable images.

Although working with the slime will be the main feature of the event, it is not practical to shoot images in this way for the whole three hours of the event.  For the first part of the event we will different art nude images using material to enhance the lighting and the model’s pose.

The evening will be divided in to three parts.

The first part will be classic low-key art nude work, there will a lot of emphasis on the lighting in this section.  We will be working out which poses and lighting set-ups will work when we add the slime.

The second part and main part of the evening is when we will use the slime. It is a clear slime, the same stuff they use on kids TV shows for gunge. The only difference is that we won’t add any colouring to it. Our model will be completely covered in the stuff by the end of the evening.

The third and final part will be the clean-up, I have the ability to set up a shower in the studio (large paddling pool with shower over the top). This will enable Callie to wash the slime off but at the same time we can shoot shower/wet-look glamour images.

Something a bit different for this “Friday Night at the Studio” event.  I keep getting people asking me what is involved in getting an LRPS or and ARPS from the Royal Photographic Society.  At this event I will explain the process.  I will show you my LRPS and ARPS panels and provide you with some feedback/critique on any panels you are planing to submit to the society.

This event is a rerun of the RPS distinctions night that I ran a year ago.  Those who attended last time found the event very helpful in preparing their submissions.

A boudoir is a French word referring to a woman’s private dressing room or bathing room.  It would usually be adjacent to her bedroom.  The room may also be used a drawing room or room in which the woman could meet with her romantic partner.

Some of these concepts have carried forward in to boudoir as a style of photography.  Common themes in boudoir photography in bedrooms, dressing rooms, dressing tables and places where the where the female subject can be found relaxing or preparing herself of a romantic encounter.

In this workshop we will look at a number of different techniques for creating Boudoir style images.  The workshop will look at different lighting techniques and the use of different props and a few cheats for creating a boudoir set

Take a trip to a Victorian / Edwardian past that never existed.  Enter the world of H G Wells and Jules Verne.  Enter the world of Steam Punk!

Steam Punk is a blend of Victorian and Edwardian fashion with elements of science fiction.  Guns are steam powered, gadgets are clock work and heroes mix top hats with welding goggles, and heroines mix corsets with overcoats!

I will be hiring / borrowing / pulling out of a worm-hole suitable props for this event, so this is a fantastic opportunity to create images in this style.  We will work with evocative lighting and also light some images such that they are suitable for use in composites.

The model for this event will be Rachael F.  Rachael has a good range of gothic looks which when combined with the steam punk props we are borrowing for the event will ensure we are able to create some great images.

Start 2015 by learning a new photography technique – Focus Stacking

One of the limitations with macro photography is the very shallow depth of field.  At this Friday night event we will explore the use of focus stacking when doing macro photography work.

If you have your own macro lenses, or extension tubes please bring them along.  If you are a canon shooter I will have some that you can borrow.

Other kit to bring: tripod and focusing rails if you have them.  (Don’t panic if you don’t as I have both at the studio that you can use).  If you wish to follow through the focus stacking techniques on your own laptop you are welcome to bring that along too.

Once we have taken a set of images, I will guide you through techniques for combining the images together to get that all important wide depth of field.

Every Christmas I run a free event at the studio to say thank you everyone who has supported the studio over the past year.  It is a time to meet with other photographers share images that we have taken during the year and enjoy a mince pie and a drink

The event is only open to people who have been to an Ian’s Studio event, workshop or course in 2014 or if you have hired the studio in 2014.  Bring along a selection of images you have created this year (please include something you have taken as a result of attending one of the studio events, workshops or courses).

You can bring images as prints or as digital files which we will display via a laptop and video projector.  You can also email/dropbox images to me ahead of the event to save time loading them on to the laptop.  I recommend a maximum of 5 images person (we may only get to critique 3 or 4 depending on the number of people attending).

Price: Free (but you must have been to a paid event at the studio in 2014)

Setting up a home studio can be expensive.  But it doesn’t have to be.  You can create most studio style images using just a handful of stobes (flash guns), a few cheap lighting stands, and various bits of material.

At tonight’s event I will show you ways of creating studio style images with limited resources.  You will see it all in action and get the chance to shoot with my strobe based studio gear.

The model for this event will be Laura.  Laura is a new model that I had the pleasure of doing a test shoot with in October.  That test shoot was primarily to go through all the lighting set-ups that we will consider at this event.  I was impressed with Laura and decided that she would be the natural choice as model for the event when I ran it at the studio.

This one day training event will teach how to create wet-look glamour images and to add rain effects and lightning effects in Photoshop.

During the morning we will spend 3hours in the studio working with a models to create the wet-look glamour images which will be the basis of our completed shots.

During this time you will learn how to set up the lights needed to create the effects.  You will learn some of the tricks employed to create wet-look images, including how to make the water droplets more visible, and how to control where the water goes.  The session is a practical session and you will have plenty of opportunity to take photographs.

Please note: due to the nature of some of the images and techniques being demonstrated at this event the model(s) will be posing topless for some of the shots.  If this is likely to cause offence please do not book to come on this course.

After lunch (which is included in the price of the course) we go into a tutorial session where you will be shown how to use Photoshop to add digital rain and digital lightning effects to the images we created during the morning session.   If you have a laptop with Photoshop on it you are welcome to bring it with you and follow the tutorials as we go through them.  Alternatively you can sit back, watch and then try out the techniques at your leisure at home.  Either way you will be provided with printed notes on how to achieve the effects and a CD with a video screencast showing you the steps for both digital rain and digital lightning.

This will be a very different Friday Night – have you ever wanted to plan and execute a shoot, from coming up with the original idea, through designing the set and the lighting, defining how the model will appear, having your say on make-up?  This event will enable you to do that.

This evening is not about getting loads of shots – it is all about getting just one or two images, and ensuring that they are something special.

We have model Bex H joining us for this event and I am planing to book an MUA to join us too. The event will have the following parts to it:

• Concept – in this section in one or two groups we will discuss ideas for images that we wish to create.  To help with this process I will arrange a number of items to be at the studio which the groups can choose to use as part of their idea.  These will include a hundreds of post-it notes, scores of old photography magazines, boxes of old VHS video tapes, a large supply of old newspapers, paint, and paste.  During this time we will take input from both model and MUA as to what is feasible from their point of view.

• Execution – Once we have decided on the first idea, as a group we will go about building a set (if we need it) creating a costume/look for out model.  The MUA will assist with make-up and styling.  Once this is ready we will light the scene and finally take our photographs of it.   We will then repeat this for the second idea.

• Post-production – For many concept images there is a third stage – post-production.  For those who are interested in exploring this part of creating an image, I am offering an ‘after hours’ session 10pm till 11pm for those who want to talk about and see different ways of processing the images we created earlier.

Posing Guides are sets of images showing different way for a model to pose.  Art Nude photography is all about pose, and during a shoot it is sometimes difficult to remember what poses you might want a model to try.  At this session we will work with KarenR, an experienced art nude model, to enable each person to create their own posing guide.

Myself, the model (and the event attendees, if they wish) will bring along ideas and possibly images showing example poses.  Each of these poses will be recreated by the model and each photographer will get the opportunity to photograph the pose. Everyone will get to shoot each pose in turn before we move on to the next pose.

We will create and shoot poses in three different set-ups.  On a box (as shown on the eFlyer), standing or floor level on a plain background, and finally against a wall.

At the end of the evening for each scenario we will each have a set of images that show scores of different art nude poses, all under the same lighting conditions.  You can then refer to this guide when working with other models in the future.

Amy has been modelling for over three years now. Originally trained in performing arts and dance she uses her skills within the shoot to really enhance the photographs. She has experience in catwalk and her work has been published. Amy covers many genres including pin up, dark gothic, avantgarde, fashion and everything inbetween. She also designs and styles her shoots as well as designing headwear which will be featured at this event.

If you have never shot in a studio before and don’t know what to expect, there is nothing to worry about.  All you need to bring is your camera and yourself.  Most people shoot with DSLRs but so long as as your camera has a hot-shoe and the ability to work in manual mode you will be fine.  Durring the two sessions I take the time to explain all the settings you will need on your camera and also how we set-up and meter the lights.  This will also be covered in the printed not supplied at the workshop.

For tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event we will be taking a different approach to lingerie and boudoir photography.  Our model for the evening will be “Calamity” and she will be bring with her a collection of unusual underwear including a studded bra see-through body stockings.

For part of the shoot we will use some of the boudoir props to create a setting for the images.

We don’t have a permanent boudoir set… (I just don’t have the space to do that) however…. I do have a collection of props which when put together can create a very convincing boudoir set.   These include:

• A bed (made from six storge boxes, and bed headboard)
• A trifold screen
• A wall papered wall
• A bit of skirting board
• A Venetian blind
• A very short chaise-longue
• A couple of different rugs
• A variety of different drapes and materials

I have also used standard background papers (to act as backgrounds and wall papers) and a sofa.

The advantage of this approach is that we can customise the set each time it is needed.

As photographers we improve by trying new things.  That might be trying studio photography for the first time.  It might be trying out a different studio to the one you normally use.   I like to think that all the events at Ian’s Studio are welcoming to first time visitors, but this week’s event will be especially so, and to encourage new visitors to come this week, I am offering a massive 40% discount on the price of this event for anyone who has never been to one of our events before.  That means you will pay just £15 instead of the full price of £25.

Another of our full-day messy days at the studio.  This time with model Maude.  At this event you have the chance to create photographs or video with a messy theme to them.

Typically at these days there will chances to shoot at least four different messy set-ups and scenarios.  At past events these have included art nude with multicoloured slime, messy diner, messy decorator, game show with forfeits.

The set-ups will be tailored to suit the type of “Wet and Messy” styles the attendees wish to wish to shoot.  It is expected that a significant number of the set-ups will appeal to photographers who enjoy shooting “splosh” / WAM fetish images.

Tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event will have an oil theme to it.   We will work with an established art nude model to create a number of artistic images which combine the human figure with oil.

We will look at a number of techniques.  We will use of baby oil to create a shine and reflections on a model’s skin.  Cooking oil and water to show water droplets on the skin, and finally we will use a black slime which looks like crude oil to create abstract bodyscapes, body part and art nude images.

As we head towards the end of Summer, this week’s Friday Night theme will be summer in the park.  A chance to practice your strobist (off camera flash) techniques as we work with our model(s) in Vernon and Woodbank parks.

Depending on the number of photographers booking I will arrange one, two or three models for us to shoot.

In the event of bad weather there are several locations we can use to shoot in the park and of course we can always use the studio.

Join us on August Bank Holiday Monday in Fleetwood for a Trash the Dress shoot with model Maud.  We will be shooting in various locations in the Fleetwood area including round the wrecks on the Fleetwood marshes.

Our model for this event will be Maud (http://purpleport.com/portfolio/maude/?referrer=ianbutty).  Maud was recently at the studio for our bedroom glamour night and our Friday 13th Event.  She was an instant hit with the photographers and I think without exception we were all keen to shoot with her again.

The dress that Maud will be wearing for this shoot will be her actual, real life wedding dress!  And we intend to completely trash it by the end of the shoot.  As Maud says:  “a celebration in mud of a great divorce hahaha“

I have found two places for us to shoot at.  The first location will be on the beach and esplanade near Lower Lighthouse.  At this location we will create some classic wedding style images – these will be our ‘before’ shots.

After that we will head over to our main location which are the famous Fleetwood Wrecks.  These are on the muddy salt marshes about a mile out of town.  The marshes are muddy and there is a bit of a scramble to get to the wrecks.  Please wear sensible footwear with good grip we will be walking over uneven, muddy ground.  I recommend that you should wear old clothes and possibly bring a change of clothing with you too.  For some of the set-ups to get the best shots you may want to go down into the muddy areas where Maud is trashing her dress.

Christmas in August!?  Get a head start on your Christmas preparations this year and learn how to create your own photographic Christmas cards.

At this Table Top Night event we will look at lots of different set ups to create images which you can use as the basis of your Christmas cards.  We will work with props, such as Christmas lights, decorations and candles, and we will see how even odd pieces of card when correctly illuminated can create stunning designs for your own Christmas cards.

If you have a tripod please bring it along with you.  If you need to borrow one we have some available at the studio.

Macro lenses may be helpful but are not essential.

Something a little different for tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event we will be look at how to create and photograph unique outfits and looks from random lengths or material, a few basic items of clothing and lots of pins and clips.

Our model for this event will be Roo Morgue.  (See: http://purpleport.com/portfolio/ianbutty/?referrer=ianbutty NSFW).   We will be creating the costumes on-set with Roo.  Because of this and to give us some flexibility with the use of sheer materials Roo has been booked to work to nude levels.

For this week’s Friday Night at the Studio event we are going to look at the theme of creating “Implied Nude” and “Implied Topless” images.  Often images can be more powerful and striking where the nudity is just hinted at.  We will consider a number of different techniques creating such images including the use of props, pose, lighting and even the angle from which we shoot.

Although the theme is implied nude and implied topless images we will be photographing a model who has been booked to work up to full nude levels.  This means that as we consider these techniques we can compare both concealed and revealed images. It also means that as we practice various techniques there is no embarrassment to the model if the concealment is not as perfect as we had intended.

This “Small Group Session” will be limited to just THREE photographers.  Our model for this session will be Illy (aka Black Beauty).  Small group sessions are a cross between a normal group shoot, bespoke training and a studio hire.

The session is limited to maximum of three photographers.  I will guide the shoot and offer advice on lighting and working with the model at the event.  I will also document the lighting set-ups used during the shoot and send lighting diagrams and notes to the participants after the event so that you can recreate the lighting used at the shoot.

Michelle Monroe has been on my mental list of models to work with for a long time.  Recently I discovered that she is retiring from modelling at the end of July.  So this Friday Night at the Studio event really is something of a one off – a hello and a goodbye to Michelle.

For this Friday Night at the studio event we will be joined by alternative/gothic model Karma Vixen.  The event will be a mix of styles and techniques

Weather permitting we will start the evening outside photographing gothic fashions using a mix of ambient light and strobist techniques.

After this we will head into the studio for low key lingerie shots with an alternative style to them.  The final set of the evening will be art nude with an particular emphasis on photographing Karma’s many tattoos.

For this evening’s Friday Night at the Studio we will looking at incorporating masks in to art nude photography.  Photographer and regular at Ian’s Studio, Les Auld will be bringing his collection of over a dozen different face masks.

In addition to the face masks we will have a selection of sheer material which when combined with the the masks can make some classic nude images.

Another of our wet and messy days at the studio.  At these days you have the chance to create photographs or video with a messy theme to them.

Typically at these days there will chances to shoot at least four different messy set-ups and scenarios.  At past events these have included art nude with multicoloured slime, messy diner, messy decorator, game show with forfeits.

The set-ups will be tailored to suit the type of “Wet and Messy” styles the attendees wish to wish to shoot.  It is expected that a significant number of the set-ups will appeal to photographers who enjoy shooting “splosh” / WAM fetish images.

It’s Friday the thirteenth!  The studio will run with blood as we create images inspired by horror and slasher films and television.

For tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event we will look at creating low-key glamour images with a sensual/erotic twist to it.

cosplay (noun) the practice of dressing up as a character from a film, book, or video game, especially one from the Japanese genres of manga or anime.

For this event we will be working with an established cosplayer / model and shooting images which will be easy to manipulate to create interesting costumed compositions.

Dance model Sarah Mansfield returns to Ian’s studio for an evening of dance and movement photography.  This evening will be a little different to normal as the emphasis will be on the photographic techniques more than the model’s poses.

We will look at the standard techniques for freezing the action and creating motion blur in a studio environment.  We will also look at in-camera multiple exposure techniques such as using using flash guns in ‘multi-strobe’ mode and techniques for combining a blurred image with a frozen image.

The techniques we will look at should be possible with any DSLR.  Not all speedlights have a ‘multi-strobe’ mode so we will use the studio speedlights.  If you want to bring your own speedlite to see if the technique is possible with your equipment.

Using a sound activated trigger system at tonight’s event we will be creating images of exploding objects such as bursting balloons.  To create a variety in the images we will fill the balloons with different substances such as water or coloured liquids.

We will also look at capturing images of objects smashing as they fall.  If you wish to have a go at creating this type of image please bring along one or two objects that you would like to drop and break.  Eg old tea cups, old ornaments, etc.  The main requirement is that the object will make noise when it hits the ground (or table) when dropped.

Starting on Tuesday 28th January….. The Comprehensive Studio Photography Course.

This nine session course will cover all aspects of studio based people photography.  Each week we will work with different models to create great images, and learn studio techniques.

• Session 1 : Understanding the light – In this first session we will create dramatic head-shots using a single light source and a large range of different light modifiers.  By the end of this session you will understand how to set up a studio light, and what effect each modifier has on the final image we are creating.
• Session 2 : Multiple lights – In this session we create interesting portraits by adding in additional light sources.  We look at ratios and metering multiple light sources   By the end of the session you will be able to set up multiple lights, and under why and when you need to add an extra light.
• Session 3 : Posing & Fashion – In this session we concentrate on how to pose your subjects.  We will also look at how to use grey backgrounds and introduce the use of gels to colour light.
• Session 4 : Photographing men & couples – In this session we work with male and female models.  We consider some of the techniques for photographing men and how to pose and light couples.
• Session 5 : Boudoir & Lingerie – using low-key lighting and specially created studio sets we look at different ways to create boudoir images.
• Session 6 : Latex, tatoos and alternative models – in this session you will be encouraged to design and set-up your own lighting to best show off our alternative model.
• Session 7 : Glamour – In this session we look at glamour photography.  The emphasis will be on hi key lighting set-ups either seamless white or using coloured background papers.

• Session 8 : Art Nude – For this session the emphasis switches to low-key lighting as we consider the creation of art nude images.
• Session 9 : Working with water and other messy substances – for the final session we we look at some of the challenges of working with water and other messy substances such as paint/slime in the studio.

All course participants will receive full printed full printed notes to accompany the course.  The notes will cover topics such as posing guidelines, advice on working with models, and sample lighting set-ups.

Tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event will be on the theme of ‘pin-up’.  We will be working with an established pin-up model to create pin-up images with bright and bold colours.

Coloured back grounds will be the order of the day.  We have a good selection of colourfull background papers at the studio and we will be augmenting these with coloured gels to increase the coulors we can shoot against.

Tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event will be led by Rick Bradbury.  Rick is known for his use of dramatic lighting in his portraiture work. 

For this event we will be looking at all kinds of dramatic lighting, using all types of modifiers from grids to big umbrellas to create images with drama/tension.

Many people think for dramatic lighting you need to use grids or hard light… whilst that works great you can also create drama with light with a larger light source.

Two three hour sessions with a leading glamour model.  Book for either afternoon or evening or both.  We will be shooting different set-ups each session so worth booking for both if you can!  The afternoon session will be 3pm – 6pm and the evening 7pm – 10pm.

Every Christmas I run a free event at the studio to say thank you everyone who has supported the studio over the past year.  It is a time to meet with other photographers share images that we have taken during the year and enjoy a mince pie and a drink

The event is only open to people who have been to an Ian’s Studio event, workshop or course in 2013 or if you have hired the studio in 2013.  Bring along a selection of images you have created this year (please include something you have taken as a result of attend one of the studio events, workshops or courses).

The first half of the evening will be critiquing and talking about our photographs this will be followed by a short shoot.  So please bring your camera.

The theme for tonight’s event table top event will be water based set-ups.  In addition to the ever popular splash tank, we now have a water droplet collisions trigger.

PLEASE NOTE: I am experiencing some problems with the water droplet collisions equipment.  I am attempting to resolved them before tomorrow night BUT at this moment in time I cannot guarantee it will be working reliably.  Other water based table top set-up will still be available.

You will need a tripod.  If you have a macro lens (or extension tubes) you will find these helpful.  I have a macro lens and extension tubes which can be borrowed by Canon shooters.

Tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event will be another of our popular tabletop nights.  In this session we will concentrate on using standard studio lighting techniques while shooting miniature figurines.

Using a mixture of speedlights and studio lights we will apply the same techniques that we might normally use to light people in the studio to figurines.  We also look at the use of reflectors, flags and gels.  Using these techniques on a table top studio is a great way to improve how you light in a full size studio.

I will have a range of figures available for you to shoot including super-heroes, figures from Doctor Who, model animals and also a range of period soldiers that was recently donated to the studio.

Set you camera to monochrome and join us for a night of creating images in black and white.  At this event we work with lighting set-ups and a model wearing outfits that will enable us to create the light and dark that is so important in great black and white images.

At this special free event we will look at a number of Psalms in the Bible and see how we can interpret them photographically on a photo walk round Woodbank and Vernon Parks.

I am running this event in association with “C3”.  “C3” is a small Christian group that is trying to explore their faith through the creative arts.   The event is open to anyone of any faith or of no faith.  There will be no preaching or “Bible bashing” just a chance for you to look at some psalms and a chance to create photographs based on them.

We will meet at 2pm at the Studio and then walk down to the parks, which are at the end of the road.  At the end of the photo walk there will be chance to come back to the studio for a cup of tea and to share the images you have created.

The event is free but it would help me to know if you are coming so that I can make sure we have the right number of printed materials and just as importantly enough tea, coffee and biscuits.

In this workshop we look at a number of simple studio lighting techniques starting with zero lights (using only window light) up to using four lights.  We also look at some basic techniques for posing subjects and for working with models.

We will look at how different light modifiers such as umbrellas, softboxes, snoots, grids and gels can be used.  There will be time during the day for you to practise these techniques with the help of a professional model.  We will cover basic posing techniques which are suitable for photographing friends, family, customers or even models.   We will also look at the biggest cheat of all for posing people in the studio – the use of props.

Printed notes to document the techniques we will look at during the day will be provided and a buffet lunch is included in the price of the event.  Numbers will be limited to 6 photographers.

Another is our ad-hoc series of table-top event.  The theme this time will be commercial photography and we will be looking a different ways to shoot interesting product shots.

As ever for the table top nights bring your tripod (although I do have ones you can borrow), if you have macro lenses or extension tubes please bring those too (I have canon versions that people can borrow).

Some of the techniques are all done in camera but other techniques, such as the image on the eFlyer use a small amount of photoshop/post-production work.  For those who want to see the photoshop techniques I use, I will spend a short while at the end of the event (10pm till about 10:45pm) demonstrating how I process and combine images together.

This event is designed to be a fun event and is intended for photographers and videographers who enjoy messy shoots.  Throughout the day we will be working with two models to capture a number of messy setups such as food fights and circus style foam fights.

Glamour is probably the most difficult photographic genre to define, and the boundary between glamour nude and art nude is fuzzy to say the least.  In tonight’s event let’s challenge our perceptions of what is glamour and take a more creative approach.

We will look at how revealing less can add more to a glamour image.  Although our model will be working to glamour nude levels we will use lighting techniques and/or props to hide, reveal and to tease.

With Ian unavailable again this week, Rick is still in charge…  Tonight’s event is about creating and showing movement in camera without Photoshop. We will be using both tungsten continuous lights and flash for this along with camera or subject movement with a view to creating ghosting in camera.

The results will be different every shot so it’s great fun experimenting with this technique. Along with basic camera or subject movement we will use lens zoom to create an interesting effect.

You may want to bring a tripod for some set ups where the camera needs to be locked in.

Other things you can bring are:

• Torches – More powerful ones are better generally.
• Other types of lights.

We will have use of modelling lights and hot lights at the studio.

Tonight’s event will be run by Rick Bradbury (Ian is directing “Agnes of God” at Woodford).  The event is all about creating shadows patterns with light and objects/props that we can fire a light at or through.

So think pattern shapes made from cardboard or household items. If you can fire a light at it and it has some holes in it we can create a pattern of light on our model.

Rick will bring along a few items but by all means feel free to bring your own.

You can see an example of this in the eFlyer, for this shot Rick had a speedlite in the Westcott Apollo soft box with Grid, placed the speedlite at the back of the soft box turned it towards the grid and fired the bare light at the grid which created the pattern you see.

So get ready for an evening of fun and experimentation with light and shadows.

For tonight’s event we are going to look at the technique of projecting images and textures over the body of our model.  We will achieve this using a laptop and a video projector.

It’s the longest day of the year so join us for a fun and frantic mega model night… in the park.  If you have been to one of our mega model nights before you will know how they work.  A group of models working on a “time for images” basis.  Photographers and models  shoot together one-to-one for twenty minutes.  When the whistle blows a different pairings are allocated and we begin again.

Models attending this event will be working on a “time for images” basis and by attending this event you agree to provide the model with images from your shoots.

As we will be outside for this event, you will probably want to bring your own strobist gear to work with.  Hopefully, as it is the longest day of the year there will still be some day light to shoot by for most of the event.

For tonight’s event we will have two experienced glamour models working together for a girl/girl shoot.  

The models will be working at different levels from lingerie to nude.  While it probably will not be possible to set up the studio shower (as shown in the eFlyer) for this event, we will be able to include an oil & water wet look set.  We will also have available the studio smoke machine, and will will get to shoot the models on at least one of the studio room sets.

Something a bit different for this “Friday Night at the Studio” event.  I keep getting people asking me what is involved in getting an LRPS or and ARPS from the Royal Photographic Society.  At this event I will explain the process.  I will show you my LRPS and ARPS panels and provide you with some feedback/critique on any panels you are planing to submit to the society.

This event is a rerun of the RPS distinctions night that I ran a year ago.  Those who attended last time found the event very helpful in preparing their submissions.

Popular vintage/pin-up model Laura Norrey comes to Ian’s Studio tonight for her first “Friday Night at the Studio” event.  

Laura has featured on posters for the Saddleworth Vintage & Handmade Fair and on the front cover of The Vintage Directory, as well as creating and modelling for a 50s pin-up charity calendar (Memory Lane), which raised over £2,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

For tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event, we are going to look at the challenge of working with props.  We are going to look at how simple props can dramatically change the images we are creating.

Working with an experienced model the format of the evening will be a series of quick rounds where you direct the model to use a single prop in lots of different ways.   Keeping each round short encourages you to think quickly and experiment to create a variety of looks.

We have a range of props at the studio including hats, glasses, feather bowers, telephones, swords, wigs, lengths of material, etc.

On 19th May 2003 – I became a full-time, freelance photographer.  A little over 2 years previously I set myself the goal of going freelance before I was 40.  I made it with 4 days to spare.

To celebrate those 10 years as a freelance photographer and to celebrate my 50th birthday I am having a studio open day.

Free use of the studio facilities, plenty of chance to socialise over cups of tea and coffee.  The day is open to photographers, models, make-up artists and anyone else who knows me and who just wants to drop in.

For tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event we are going to take a different perspective on Art Nude photography.  The aim from each set up is to create 3 images that will work together to form a triptych.A triptych is a display of three images that work well together.  These may be three complimentary images, three contrasting image, or even three sections of a single image.

At this event we will look at various ideas which we can use to find three images from one or more set-ups.  We will look at techniques such as using props as a common feature, the use of poses to unite the three images.

It is planned that we will include bodyscape triptychs as as well as more traditional art nude triptychs.

For tonight’s Friday night event we will be working with the lovely Sarah Mansfield again, Sarah has a great personality and is always fun to work with and brings with her dance and movement skills that can be incorporated into the location shots.

Even though we have 2 parks nearby we wont be using them, instead we will work outside the studio using the surrounding industrial and urban areas.  Think if it as a photowalk / model shoot.  The feel will be urban so the clothing will match.

If you have your own Strobist gear feel free to bring it and set a shot up whilst another is being made but travel light so we can move around.

One catch with this event, I want you to set up your shot and make it.  If you need help no problem but try to get out of your comfort zone and make your image.  If you are an experienced shooter great, if not help is on hand.

The first hour will be shooting set ups I will light and demo, then it’s your floor. FYI you can still make your shot even if I have set up lights.. unsure how? Ask me on the night.

If the UK weather decides to mess us about we will either try to find shelter to work in or go back to the studio.. Don’t worry if we have to retreat back to the studio I’ve got plans for that just in case. :)

A late addition to the programme, this Friday we will be having one of our regular “Table-top nights”.  A chance to have a go at smoke patterns,  water splashes, macro photography, focus stacking and possibly the odd bit of table-top trickery!

Tripods, Macro lenses (and/or extensions tubes) will be needed for some of the set-ups (but not all), remote triggers are useful to have.  Canon shooters can borrow my macro lens and/or extension tubes.  I also have spare tripods and focusing rails that people can use.

Depending on the number of photographers booking to come we will have at least one model and probably two available to add ‘human interest’ into the atmospheric images we will be producing.  If we have a large number of photographers booking for this event additional models will be booked.

This is the sixth time I have run a night photography event at Woodford and each time the event has proven to be very popular.

This one day training event will teach how to create wet-look glamour images and to add rain effects and lightning effects in Photoshop.

During the morning we will spend 2-3hours in the studio working with one or more models (depending on the number of photographers attending) to create the wet-look glamour images which will be the basis of our completed shots.

During this time you will learn how to set up the lights needed to create the effects.  You will learn some of the tricks employed to create wet-look images, including how to make the water droplets more visible, and how to control where the water goes.  The session is a practical session and you will have plenty of opportunity to take photographs.

Please note: due to the nature of some of the images and techniques being demonstrated at this event the model(s) will be posing topless for some of the shots.  If this is likely to cause offence please do not book to come on this course.

After lunch (which is included in the price of the course) we go into a tutorial session where you will be shown how to use Photoshop to add digital rain and digital lightning effects to the images we created during the morning session.   If you have a laptop with Photoshop on it you are welcome to bring it with you and follow the tutorials as we go through them.  Alternatively you can sit back, watch and then try out the techniques at your leisure at home.  Either way you will be provided with printed notes on how to achieve the effects and a CD with a video screencast showing you the steps for both digital rain and digital lightning.

Starting on Wednesday 20th February….. our new studio based training course: The Comprehensive Studio Photography Course.

This six or nine session course will cover all aspects of studio based people photography.  Each week we will work with different models to create great images, and learn studio techniques.

• Session 1 : Understanding the light – In this first session we will create dramatic head-shots using a single light source and a large range of different light modifiers.  By the end of this session you will understand how to set up a studio light, and what effect each modifier has on the final image we are creating.
• Session 2 : Multiple lights – In this session we create interesting portraits by adding in additional light sources.  We look at ratios and metering multiple light sources   By the end of the session you will be able to set up multiple lights, and under why and when you need to add an extra light.
• Session 3 : Posing & Fashion – In this session we concentrate on how to pose your subjects.  We will also look at how to use grey backgrounds and introduce the use of gels to colour light.
• Session 4 : Photographing men & couples – In this session we work with male and female models.  We consider some of the techniques for photographing men and how to pose and light couples.
• Session 5 : Boudoir & Lingerie – using low-key lighting and specially created studio sets we look at different ways to create boudoir images.
• Session 6 : Latex, tatoos and alternative models – in this session you will be encouraged to design and set-up your own lighting to best show off our alternative model.

For the following three sessions the models will be working to nude levels and are therefore optional.

• Session 7 : Glamour – In this session we look at glamour photography.  The emphasis will be on hi key lighting set-ups either seamless white or using coloured background papers.
• Session 8 : Art Nude – For this session the emphasis switches to low-key lighting as we consider the creation of art nude images.
• Session 9 : Working with water and other messy substances – for the final session we we look at some of the challenges of working with water and other messy substances such as paint/slime in the studio.

All course participants will receive full printed full printed notes to accompany the course.  The notes will cover topics such as posing guidelines, advice on working with models, and sample lighting set-ups.

Additionally each attendee will receive a voucher for 3hrs fee studio hire (worth £50) – to be taken within 6 months of the end of the course.  This is your chance to put in to practice all the skill you have learned on the course.

This event will be all about shooting Wide Open… Grab that nifty fifty or fast glass and crank open those apertures… its time to take a break from F8 and shoot some beautiful shallow depth of field images.

We will have access to a large number of modifiers to experiment with along with speedlites with the lower power range that comes with using them.  The modelling lights can also make great low powered continuous light sources for shooting wide open.

If you have just purchased or may be received a new fast prime lens then this is the perfect event to attend to give it a run.

You will need…

• Camera, Cards, Batteries
• Fast Lens (50 F1.8, or 2.8 glass) But don’t worry if you only have F4 lens we can still make it work.
• You may want to bring a tripod or mono pod for when we use the modelling lights; you can shoot hand held by cranking the ISO.

At this workshop I will demonstrate a number of art nude set-ups.  There will be printed notes detailing the lighting set-ups being used.

The day will be suitable for those who are a little unsure about where to start with art nude photography; but time will be built into the day to enable more experienced photographers to build on these set-ups.

Tonight’s event will be something a bit different.  This latest event in our popular table-top photography events will enable you photograph water drop collisions.  Photographer Stephen Ennis will be bring to the studio a specialist set-up which not only controls the flash, but controls the number and rate of water droplets

The set-up uses electronics and solenoids to control the water droplets and there by ensure ensure we can capture spectacular droplet collisions every shots.

In addition to this I will show you how you can still create interesting water droplet images using very basic items you can find around the home.

In addition to your camera if you have any of the following please bring your macro lens or extension tubes, tripod, flash, cable release or remote trigger.  If you don’t have these things there will be plenty at the studio to share but it is always easier to use your own gear.

Another of our popular table-top photography nights.  This week we will have the opportunity to create dramatic images of Lord of the Rings gaming miniatures and dioramas.

We will use lighting techniques to enhance the painting and construction of the figures and scenery.

Among the dioramas that will be available to work with will be a recreation of Weathertop and possibly a recreation of Khazad Dum.

To make the most of this event you will need a macro lens and/or extension tubes.  You will also need a tripod.  I have a couple of spare tripods at the studio that can be borrowed for the evening, and canon users can borrow extension tubes.

Glamour photography evening with an emphasis on the use of oil and water on the model’s body.

We will use lighting techniques to highlight the effects of oil on our subject’s body and making sure that water droplets will show up.

Another is our series of messy workshops/shoots.  This time our model is the amazing Axa Jay.

Axa is a very experienced model who has done numerous messy shoots in the past, and can she can be found on many messy fetish websites.

Messy workshops / messy group shoots at Ian’s studio tend to be a mix between messy art nude set-ups and set-ups with a more messy fetish (sploshing) aspect to them.  Because of Axa’s experience the emphasis this time is going to be more towards the splosh style of shoot.  Although, there will be some time for some arty shots should anyone want to shoot that style.

At this Friday Night at the Studio event, we will be creating glamour images involving water splashes.

We will be using strobes in the studio to freeze the action as water is thrown at our glamour model.  We will work on a number of different set-ups from small splashes to large splashes.

For some of the images the model will be working clothed for others she will be nude.

In this workshop we look at a number of simple studio lighting techniques starting with zero lights (using only window light) up to using four lights.  We also look at some basic techniques for posing subjects and for working with models.

We will look at how different light modifiers such as umbrellas, softboxes, snoots, grids and gels can be used.  There will be time during the day for you to practise these techniques with the help of a professional model.  We will cover basic posing techniques which are suitable for photographing friends, family, customers or even models.   We will also look at the biggest cheat of all for posing people in the studio – the use of props.

Each session will look at one or two related genres of photography.  We will cover techniques and equipment, and I will be providing practical advice and where appropriate I’ll share experiences from a professional perspective.

The course is aimed at photographers who have a reasonable level of photographic knowledge.  I have designed the course to be particularly suitable for those who have already completed my “Introduction to Digital Photography” course.  If you have not completed that course, you should have an understanding of photographic techniques such as exposure, aperture, controlling depth of field, etc.  Experience of using flash guns is useful but not essential.  As with any course the time spent on any given subject will be tailored to reflect the current knowledge and experience of those attending.

Printed course materials will be provided to all attendees.  Throughout the course there will be opportunities should you wish to have your photographs assessed to help you improve.

Places on the course will be limited.  

Please note: The course is designed for users of DSLR cameras.  If you have a “compact” camera or a “bridge” camera please contact me to discuss its suitability for this course.

The theme for tonight’s “Friday Night at the Studio” event will be dance.  We will be working with a professional dancer to create dance related images.

Throughout the evening there will be chances to photograph ballet poses, charleston (1920s flapper) and modern jazz dance styles.
