  • POTD Fri, 6 Feb 2004: Church steeple 6 February 2004

    Church steeple

6 Feb 2004: A trip to Didsbury today captured a few images including this shot of a steeple.

2015 Update: Looking back on the set of images this came from some 11 years later. I’m not impressed with what I photographed and I was struggling to find any image I was going to be happy to post as my POTD from that date.

Important lesson here. Our photography should be constantly getting better. Which means it is a good thing to look at old images and think “oh that’s bad…” it means what we would produce today is better. And that’s how it should be!

A Detail from the sculpture of an Elephant carrying an obelisk

    ROME DAY ONE
We started our trip to Rome by visiting some of the piazzas near our hotel. We visited Piazza de Spagna, Piazza Navona, Piazza della Rotonda and Piazza Minerva where I photographed this detail from the sculpture of an Elephant carrying an obelisk.

  • POTD Sat, 21 Feb 2004: ROME DAY TWO – The Simonetti Staircase. 21 February 2004

    The Simonetti Staircase.

The weather in Rome has been bad – when we arrived we were greeted by international news teams doing features on how bad the weather was. Today we decided to head to the Vatican Museum where for most of the time we were inside.

My favourite part of the whole museum was on the way out. The famous Simonetti Staircase. It’s a double-helix design. It is often photographed from above look down. I decided to shoot from below looking up.

A brief glimmer hope today. After all the rain and white skies, a hint of blue sky visible while visiting the Colosseum.

  • POTD Tue, 24 Feb 2004: ROME DAY FIVE – The Jewish Quarter 24 February 2004

Street Scene from the Jewish Quarter of Rome

We are back to boring white skies again today. In an attempt to make this image a little less boring and to add a little colour to it, I have used a tobacco graduated filter to colour the sky and the top part of the image.

  • POTD Wed, 25 Feb 2004: ROME DAY SIX – The Castle of Angels 25 February 2004

A statue of the Archangel Saint Michael at Castel Sant’Angelo, Rome

The bad weather continues. The morning vist to Castel Sant’Angelo saw flat boring light… again. The afternoon we headed out to the Caracalla Roman baths. It rained. The best image of the day is this of a statue of the Archangel Saint Michael at Castel Sant’Angelo, Rome

  • POTD Thu, 26 Feb 2004: ROME DAY SEVEN – Looking Up 26 February 2004

The dome of Basilica San Pietro (St. Peter’s Basilica), Rome. In the foreground is the baldacchino by Bernini. The bronze canopy is directly over the site of St. Peter’s tomb.

Weather wise today was a real improvement on yesterday. I still spent most of my time excluding white skies from my images – at least there was some brightness and it was dry. I could have chosen a number of images for today’s POTD but I think this one will be a favourite of mine for years to come.

  • POTD Fri, 27 Feb 2004: ROME DAY EIGHT – Kareoke Angel 27 February 2004

Angels on the Sant’Angelo bridge, Rome. The angels which were designed by Gianlorenzo Bernini each carry an imlement from the Passion (Crusifixion) of Jesus. This angel holds the nails used to crusify Jesus.

At last at mid-day on our final full day in Rome, the sun finally break through. I had planned for this moment. I had a mental list of the places I wanted to revisit when the weather improved. Top of my list was the angel statues in front of the the Castle Sant’Angelo. Which really do need a decent sky behind them.

Am I the only person who thinks this Angel looks like he is holding a microphone and doing a kareoke session?
