  • POTD 2 Jan 2012: Winter Fountain 2 January 2012

Fountain with winter sun (Image Reference: 20120102A-E00032)

Ann and I went for a walk this morning with friends Stuart & Lucy round Woodbank Park (4.5miles according to my GPS). The final part of the walk took us up through Vernon Park. I really liked how the winter sun was shining through the fountain.

Water and translucent subject always do look better photographed with backlighting as in this case, and since there wasn’t much colour in the scene a black and white conversion was almost a no-brainer. A slight split toning effect was added in Lightroom along with a vignette to help draw the viewer into the image. I’ve also boosted the contrast and clarity sliders to give the image a bit more ‘bite’.

    2 Jan 2020 Update:
I am sad to report that this fountain is no longer working and hasn’t been for five or six years. I’m so glad I managed to get the wonderful image before it was left to decay. I hope one day that it will be restored again.

    Settings: 1/250s, f/8, ISO 100. Lens: EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM @70 mm.

  • POTD 3 Jan 2012 – True West in Rehearsal 3 January 2012

Today's photo comes from a rehearsal of the Sam Shepard play True West, which will be opening at Stockport Garrick Theatre in two and a half weeks time. Was at the theatre this evening to get a few images that could be used for publicity purposes.

This show shows one of the actors, a writer, looking over a script he has been working on. Although the rehearsal was in the Theatre dressing room rather than on stage the cluttered background kind of works with the shot, I can almost imagine a writer in a cluttered home working and reviewing he work.

  • POTD 4 Jan 2012 – Experiments with Bokeh 4 January 2012

After a good journey to Fuerteventura we went for a brief walk round Corralejo in the evening. I set myself the task of capturing some bokeh images. Bokeh, for those who don't know, is a Japanese word for out of focus circles of light. I shot several images, but the one I've chosen as my POTD/Year in Pictures/366 Challenge image was from inside a shopping centre where all the columns are covered with lights, and there are blue strips of light on the floor.

I wasn't sure about the out of focus person in this image when I took the shot but now I quite like it.

You can see the rest on my gallery here: http://photos.imb.biz/travel/canary/fuerteventura/corralejonight

  • POTD Thu, 5 Jan 2012: Monument to the fishermen 5 January 2012

Monument to fishermen and thier families

On the harbour in Corralejo there are two statues which commemorate the part fishermen and their families have played in making of the town of Corralejo.

The first statue shows a lone fisherman’s wife looking longingly out to see. Has something happened to her husband? A little further on is a second statue at first sight this appears to be a woman and child being comforted. As you approach the statue you see that the figure with them has a basket of fish and net. Closer examination still shows the figure is smiling. This is not a monument of comforting after loss, it’s joyful reunion of a fisherman with his family.

Stone piles on the Corralejo dunes beach, Corralejo, Fuerteventura, Spain

We found this pile of rocks on the "Dunes Beach" while out for a walk. I don't know if the rocks are just carefully balanced or are fixed together. Either way it looked impressive enough to warrant a photograph.

  • POTD 7 Jan 2012 – Church and Trolley 7 January 2012

This morning we wandered down to the old town section of Corralejo, and went looking for the church in the centre of town. The church of Nuestra Senora Del Carmon is three hundred years old. I don't know how old the building is.

Lurking at the side of the church was an abandoned shopping trolley. I'll be honest, I moved the trolley in front of the church, for the photo. I processed the images in a number of different ways, but I quite like this high contrast colour version.

Different versions of the church and trolley images can be found on my gallery: http://photos.imb.biz/travel/canary/fuerteventura/corralejo (They are part way through the album)

All I need to work out now is why does putting a trolley in front of a church make an interesting image?

  • POTD 8 Jan 2012 : Lobos Jetty 8 January 2012

It was time to do a little Island hopping today we caught the ferry over to Lobos 2 miles off the cost of Corralejo. Population almost nil. Lobos is a volcanic island that is only a couple of miles in length. We circumnavigated the island – a walk of about 5.5miles. On route we saw this jetty, which looks far more interesting in black and white and with the sky darkened a little in Lightroom.

  • POTD 9 Jan 2012: Feet up at the pool (includes irony) 9 January 2012

I admit I am a day late in posting this POTD image. For the record it WAS taken yesterday (9 Jan 2012) and given the events of today the irony of the image does not escape me. As those who follow me on facebook will already know: today (10 Jan) I fell down some stairs while sightseeing and have sprained both ankles. :-(

I guess this is the main view I'm going to see for the next couple of days… except that both ankles are now strapped up!

  • POTD 10 Jan 2012: Centro de Arte Canario, La Oliva 10 January 2012

Art installation at Casa Mane Canarian Art’s Centre (Centro de Arte Canario), La Oliva, Fuerteventura, Spain (Image Reference: 20120110A-E00344)

This was one of the places we visited in La Oliva (just before I sprained both my ankles). It is an open-air arts centre with interesting sculptures set in gardens. I was trying to get the entirety of this particular sculpture in shot but never quite managed it. I still like the effect of the composition though.

January 2020 Update: Strange how my tastes in composition change. From all the images I shot on this day, I don’t think now, I would choose this as my POTD. Take a look at the gallery below. Which would you choose?

  • POTD 11 Jan 2012 : Barcelo Corralejo Bay Dining Room (11/366) 11 January 2012

Barcelo Corralejo Bay Dining Room, Corralejo, Fuerteventura, Spain

After spraining my ankles the day before I was just about confined to the hotel today. Spent most of the time in the spa in various pools, saunas and relaxation areas. No photos there didn't want to risk anything happening the camera! I tried to get a POTD at a local restaurant at lunch time… but it was closed. So set this one up in the dining room at the hotel. Unfortunately just after taking this shot the waitress came to move the four empty (unused) glasses and knocked the fanta drink all over Ann's dinner and narrowly missing my camera. I am wondering if it might have been safer to take the camera in to the spa after all. At least I'm not the only one who is accident prone round here!

  • POTD 12 Jan 2012: Chipmunk looking for food 12 January 2012

A chipmunk looks at tourists at a cafe in Jandia, Fuerteventura, Spain (Image Reference: 20120112A-E00449)

Visiting Jandia today we had nearly 5hrs to explore. Near the town’s lighthouse is where a colony of Chipmunks live. Had a lot of fun photographing these fellows as they hunted for food. There are really quite tame coming right up to you… and then running off very quickly before you have the chance to photograph them.

I was quite taken with this image of one of them sitting on the rocks where the live and forage for food looking longingly at the tourists sitting outside the nearby beach cafe. I’m not sure how he or she regards them. Invaders or a source of a free lunch?

  • POTD 13 Jan 2012 : Abandoned shopping trolley (13/366) 13 January 2012

Abandoned shopping trolley, El Cotillo, Fuerteventura, Spain

Difficult to choose which picture to upload as my POTD for 13 Jan. We visited El Cotillo which is where I had planed to go a few days earlier but I sprained my ankles and we had to abandon that idea.

On the whole El Cotillo is a nice place but there are a few areas of urban decay such as this building where I found an abandoned shopping trolley. I'm starting to think I could make a whole sequence of images based round shopping trolleys.

With this image I was please I was able to balance the trolley on the left with the chair visible through the doorway. There has been some colour tweaking in Lightroom to generally reduce the saturation of the image.

This was one of the images from our trip over to Lanzarote. It's a rope fence that has seen better days. As Ann pointed out it is quite an appropriate POTD to post. With my ankles still hurting and still needing to be strapped up, both me and the rope are a bit frayed at the edges.

Palm tree with lights at night, Corralejo, Fuerteventura, Spain

It's been a very lazy day today – largely due to my ankles constantly aching – managed to get out of the hotel twice. Once for a walk up to a shopping area for a craft fair and to get lunch. The second trip out was about getting a photo for my POTD. I've done better night shots in the past but considering this one was done with no tripod and a half second exposure I'm reasonably happy with it.

  • POTD 17 Jan 2012 : View from a volcano (16/366) 17 January 2012

The view from the caldera, Lobos, Fuerteventura, Spain

Really wasn't sure my sprained ankles were going to let me do this! The island of Lobos has a dormant volcano on it. And I wanted to climb it. We left it till the very last day of the holiday and set of for Lobos. Ankles both strapped up, painkillers taken and off we set. I am pleased to say that the ankles held out and I even managed to overtake a couple of other walkers on the way up. Very difficult to pick just one shot from the experience as my Photo Of The Day. But I've settled on this B&W view from the very top looking back to Corralejo and the rest of Fuerteventura.

More photos from Lobos can be found here: http://photos.imb.biz/travel/canary/fuerteventura/lobos

Stockport Garrick Theatre – The Crucible (Image Reference: 20120126A-E01193-5)

This was a relatively quick shoot to produce an image to publicise Stockport Garrick’s forthcoming production of The Crucible. The lighting was two softboxes front either side and rim lighting behind the three actors. Minimal editing to the image… a boost in clarity and contrast, a reduction in saturation, the actor on the left moved slightly towards the centre and that’s about it.

Leidolf Wetzlar Lordette Camera, Model Prontor-s with a Triplon f/2.8 50mm lens.

Do you remember when cameras looked like this? This was my first camera… well to be strictly accurate it was my Dad's camera and he used to let me use it as a kid. I learned a lot about photography from this camera… like estimating distance – there was no focusing mechanism for it you just guessed how far away your subject was, and set the dial accordingly. No built-in light meter. Dad had one but we didn't use it – we used something known as the "Sunny 16 Rule". And best of all you didn't need a computer to process the images afterwards. You just put the memory ca… I mean film… in the little envelope that Kodak (remember them) gave you put it in the post and two week later you would get your slides back. Oh happy days.

Shame all the photos I took were rubbish!

    Keyboard Error

Stock photography was the inspiration for this image. Thought it might be a marketable shot. Reminds me of the genuine error message that used to appear on computer screens about 15-20 years ago when booting up: "Keyboard not found. Press F1 to continue."

I sometimes subscribe to the Pratchett theory that all technology is run by small imps… I am convinced it must be true because immediately after saving this image in Photoshop, my PC crashed and displayed the "blue screen of death" for the first time in years. I think the imp must have taken this as a instruction!
