2 January : A Pint into a half pint glass…. or why I will probably fail at this 365 challenge.
There simply are not enough hours in the day to do all the things I want to do. It is like trying to fit a pint into a half pint glass. Although I am starting the challenge with the best of intentions, I know it will probably get squeezed out as the year goes on. The challenge is fun and helps my photography but other things such as clients, and the tax man have a greater call on my time.
For those interested in how the shot was created I’m including my set-up shot. In addition to the flash on the table I had an on-camera flash bouncing off the ceiling (at low power) to trigger the optical slave on the flash you can see on the table. I crouched down low and using a wide angle lens I came in close to the glass so that I can see the bottle through it. A wide depth of field (f/11) and careful manual focus gave the best compromise on what is actually in focus.

I was at the studio this evening setting up for tomorrow night’s waterdroplet collisions night. My thanks to Stephen and Jonathan who came with the equipment and showed me how to use it.
I was spoiled for choice for a photo of the day from the shoot – and you can see what I mean by looking at the gallery here: photos.imb.biz/studio/waterdroplets2
In the end, I went for one of the final images from the shoot with two of my Daleks looking into the water droplet splash as though it were some sort of scanner. I particularly like this image because we have a reflection in the splash which looks like a question mark. Long-time Doctor Who fans will know that 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th Doctor all sported a question mark on their costume.
Settings: 1s, f/6.3, ISO 100. Lens: 105.0 mm @105 mm.

I did the Burnage parkrun for the first time this morning. After the run I took the opportunity to photograph the wonderful sunrise.
Of course the sunrise and the sky looked nothing like this. Here's the link to the before image: www.flickr.com/photos/ianbutty/8350575343/in/photostream/
If there is the remotest hint of a sunrise, Lightroom can make it dramatic. Pump up the white balance to the warm side. Increase the contrast and the clarity. Add a coloured (orange) graduate filter over the top half of the sky just to help it a little. And finally another graduate filter to take the exposure down to black on the foreground.
Who says the camera never lies??

Sometimes I just want to create a simple shot. I had this in mind to shoot from day 1 of the challenge. As tonight is "twelfth night" and the day the decorations come down, I thought I'd better shoot it now. Or I would have to wait till December to get it. As I very much doubt I will have kept up with this 365 challenge come December I came to the conclusion it was now or never.

A trip in to Denton to select a sofa and chairs plus other props for the production of “Rope” that I am directing at Stockport Garrick
2020 Update: Nearly three years after this photo was taken, in March 2017, a major fire happened at the warehouse and many of the props were destroyed. After that, the props hire part of the business was merged with another company and HWL became Howorth Weapons Ltd – who now supplies weapons for stage, film, TV and even photographic use.
Settings: 1/15s, f/2.5, ISO 1250. Lens: EF50mm f/1.8 @50 mm.

I have designed a very unusual set for Rope (the play I am directing) which requires some very odd looking doors. They were being built at the theatre this evening and Mark was checking the door frame was the right height… he was definitely not sleeping on the job. (I have to state that otherwise I he might not build the rest of the set!).

This comes from tonight’s “Cheeky Glamour Night” at the studio. It was a candid shot of model Kaylee. I was suggesting a pose to her as part of a “geek style” set and she just giggled and raised her hands to her face. Creating the perfect “family friendly” image. I love the natural expression it gives.

This comes from the Art Nude Workshop I was running at my Studio Today. One of the participants had asked about creating images using light through a Venetian blind. This was the result. Rim light model left to light the hair. Then speed light in front of model with a set of blind in front of her (just out of shot). We used a speedlight rather than a studio head because the light from a speedlight is closer to a point source thus giving sharper shadows from the blinds.

This is not the photo of the day I wanted to take for today. Today was the tech rehearsal for Rope. I had planned to take a photograph of the sound desk at the end of the tech. But as we were running late I suddenly realised that were not going to finish before midnight. So at 11:50pm I took my camera out and took a shot of the set as we worked through the sound an light cues. I think the stage crew have done an excellent job converting my ideas and designs in to a finished set.

In 2013 I wrote:
Today’s photo of the day was inspired by a comment from a friend on Facebook. Rebecca said: “Looked out of the window and the snow was going up. Awaited TARDIS noise. A few seconds later look out the window and the snow is going down. Missed my chance again.”I can’t change the snow direction in the photo. Not enough of it but at least it is a TARDIS in the snow.
January 2020 update:
The comment about the snow going up is a reference to a Doctor Who quote about the Doctor coming to collect someone when the snow goes backwards. After seven years I can’t remember the quote nor which episode it is from. Can any of my Doctor Who fan friends remind me?Settings: 1/30s, f/8, ISO 100. Lens: EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM @92 mm.

The remains of Christ Church Stockport
This is Christ Church in Heaton Norris, Stockport… or rather what remains of it. The church is a ruin only the tower and a bit of wall remains. I would love to go in and photograph it but it is all sealed off, and this image was only possible by pushing the camera through the gate railings.
A photography note is that the day was horrible and grey – the pseudo-HDR effect was created in Lightroom – pushing most of the sliders to their limits to find the colour and detail in the image.
Settings: 1/40s, f/4.5, ISO 100. Lens: EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM @24 mm.

Playing catch-up on the posting. I’ll be honest, this is very much a grab shot. I came out of the theatre after watching “Rope” and realised I still hadn’t taken a photo today. No tripod, camera balanced on a barrier and held as steady as I could. Which is why the top of the library is missing from the shot. On the plus side I like the foreground of the hatched area of the traffic junction.

Background 2-3m away so minimal light hitting it.. Shoot along the grain to create lead-in lines and tilt the camera to give an interesting angle… and because I can never keep the damn thing straight!
