  • POTD Wed, 1 Jan 2014: Pony exercise area 1 January 2014

Sign and muddy path leading to pony exercise area at Brabyns Park

2014 started with a parkrun at Brabyns Park in Marple. It was muddy and it was rainy. On the way back to the car at the end of the run I spotted this sign and the muddy path.

Sometimes when you look at a scene you know it is a photograph that you want to convert to black and white from the outset. This is one such image. In Lightroom I added contrast and clarity to make the image pop in black and white. The is also a subtle vignette to help draw the eye into the image.

  • POTD Thu, 2 Jan 2014: Hyacinths 2 January 2014

    Hyacinths

We were sent some hyacinths at Christmas. It was a little touch-and-go as to whether they would bloom before we went on holiday. As you can see they just about made it.

For the technically minded the black background is actually our TV. The flowers are illuminated by a handheld speedlight, connected to the camera via an ETTL cable. I held the flash as high as I could and slightly to the front of the flowers. A suitable manual exposure of 1/125s at f/5 was selected and the camera did the rest.

  • POTD Fri, 3 Jan 2014: A view of La Palma 3 January 2014

    A view of La Palma

3rd of Jan 2014 sees the start of our winter holiday on the Island of La Palma. One of the first views we got was of the clouds, cacti and lupins(?) set against the backdrop of the mountains and hills that the island is famous for.

For the trip I am in ‘travelling light’ mode and the image was (originally) processed in Snapseed on the iPad. Since my return to the UK I have revisited the image and reprocessed it using Nik Software HDR efexs and Colour efex Pro. I wanted to see how easy it was to create the snapseed effect in their main software. Not to tricky and the look is almost identical.

You can see the snapseed processed image and others from that first day in La Palma here: http://photos.imb.biz/travel/lapalma/day1

  • POTD Sat, 4 Jan 2014: Swiming pool at Night 4 January 2014

    Hotel swimming pool at night

Our first full day in Los Cancajos saw us finding our way round both the resort and the hotel.

As the sun began to set I decided to do some night photography at the pool. It always was my intention to heavily process the images from the shoot. Originally I processed the image with snapseed on the iPad but after my return to the uk I reproduced the the processing using a combination of Lightroom and Nik Software.

Traditional Canarian balconies (Image Reference: 20140105A-G00082)

Trying to pick just one image from our walk into Santa Cruz as my Photo of the Day is almost impossible.

It really came down to two images. This one and one of the ‘dwarf statue’ images. (See below) Both are iconic parts of the town. Both images have come out beautiful when processed with Nik Color efex pro.

    Dwarf statue in Plaza Alemeda

Eventually, it came down to this: the balconies are hundreds of years old. They are made from Canarian pine. Wood from Canarian pine is some of the toughest in the world. The trees can actually survive forest fires! The statue of the dwarf, on the other hand, is well… a statue of a dwarf and I can tell you nothing about it.

    Settings: 1/400s, f/8, ISO 100. Lens: EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM @40 mm.

  • POTD Tue, 7 Jan 2014: Hotel Grounds 7 January 2014

Restaurant table under a rubber plant tree in the garden of Hacienda San Jorge

A lazy day round the hotel after the previous day’s walk. I took some time to go round the hotel grounds to get a few images of where we’re staying.

This image uses a number of techniques. I needed to balance the daylight on the pool area with the light under the rubber plant tree. I used my speedlight on a 3m TTL lead and to place the light as far off to the right as I could manage. This avoids the flat lighting of having the light coming from the same direction as the camera.

I also tried to defuse the light from the flash as much as possible but this still created some shadows. In post production I used lightroom to ‘open up’ the shadows and give a slight boost the the saturation.

  • POTD Thu, 9 Jan 2014: Old sea fort at Los Cancajos 9 January 2014

Old sea fort at Los Cancajos

I want just about every image from 9th January 2014 to be my photo of the day. But there can only be one. BUT the others can be found here: http://photos.imb.biz/travel/lapalma/day6

The day didn’t start too well – our walking trip to the Caldera was cancelled due to bad weather. So what to do? It wasn’t sitting out at the pool weather so we went for a stroll along the sea front at Los Cancajos.

It took a long time to walk a short distance because every few steps there were amazing photo opportunities. It wasn’t that the views were particularly special it was the sky…. and the way it interacted with the coastline. Then after the amazing ruined sea fort we came across a woman doing her morning exercises on a platform, silhouetted against that sky. You just couldn’t set up a scene like that… it’s is just perfect.

Walking back to the hotel we passed through the local shopping arcade. This again was something of a photographer’s delight. Although this isn’t an abandoned shopping centre – it felt like it. It was a chance to photograph some urban decay.

Just about all the images from this day have been processed using Nik Software to get the effects I was looking for.

Please take the time to look through the full gallery… http://photos.imb.biz/travel/lapalma/day6 – you won’t be disappointed.

  • POTD Fri, 10 Jan 2014: Los Cancajos Beach 10 January 2014

    Los Cancajos Beach (long exposure)

10 January turned out to be another lazy day round the hotel. Late afternoon I set off to the beach to get some long exposure sea scapes. You can find my attempts here: http://photos.imb.biz/travel/lapalma/day7

One of the problems I discovered is that my ND filters, over the years have become scuffed and with small aperture thes are showing on the images. For this POTD image I chose to add a dirt and scratch filter to help hide the marks. However you can still see some of them on the beach following the line of the sea.

A cockerel on the trail R. T. Traviesa

On Saturday 11 January we did another trek in La Palma. The name of the organised walk was “The Enchanted Paths” and took us through some lovely scenery which the camera just can’t quite do justice to… well I suppose to be strictly accurate I couldn’t do justice to… at least not in the middle of the day and not while trying to keep up with the walk leaders. I am however quite pleased with this image of a cockerel.

  • POTD Sun, 12 Jan 2014: The view from Roque de Los Muchachos 12 January 2014

The view from Roque de Los Muchachos

For this POTD I have chosen an image which doesn’t reflect the day as a whole! Roque de Los Muchachos is the higest point of La Plama. Because of this we saw snowy mountains and people building snowmen. It is also the place where 14 different astronomical telescopes are located. One of which we got to go in side.

Also this day we did time. Well visited “El Time” and went to the Caldera de Taburiente national park for more amazing views and to get up close to two Ravens.

It was too difficult to pick a POTD from all of that so you get a simple black and white view. To see all the rest of the things I have talked about you will have to look here: http://photos.imb.biz/travel/lapalma/day9

Forest walk in the Cubo de La Galga Gorge

Ten days into our January holiday we were booked on a walk through La Palma “Enchanted Forest” – This POTD is from the first part of the walk which was through the Forest.

The image was processed on the iPad and I added in some area of focus blur to try to make the people in the image look almost like little figurines walking through a giant forest.

  • POTD Sat, 18 Jan 2014: Burnage parkrun 18 January 2014

    Burnage parkrun – 18 January 2014

I am not really a sports photographer. But while marshalling/stewarding for Burnage parkrun a day after returning from La Palma I took the opportunity to practice my skills. You can see the images worth keeping here: http://photos.imb.biz/client/parkrun140118. I didn’t end up with a very got ‘hit rate’. I got quite a lot of out of focus images and a few where the motion blur was a little too much.

There are a few lessons I take away from this – firstly if I am going to shoot sport I need to think about how I set my camera up. Back button focusing probably isn’t the best way to go! Secondly although I was using auto ISO to try to keep the shutter speed high I need to set the minimum shutter speed higer that I have it. Clearly what works as a minimum shutter speed for theatre work doesn’t for sports. Next time I shoot sport I will spend more time thinking about camera settings before I leave home.

  • POTD Sun, 19 Jan 2014: Manchester Art Gallery 19 January 2014

    Manchester Art Gallery

A trip into Manchester to see the Grayson Perry tapestries at Manchester At Gallery. I Wasn’t sure what to take as my photo of the day, it was a dull damp day.

This was, at the time, pretty much what I call a ‘banker’ shot. Something that will do if I don’t get anything else. I always shoot ‘banker’ shots. Get an OK shot ‘in the bank’ at the start of the shoot, something that I can fall back on if nothing else works.

With this trip however I ended up using the banker shot, not because nothing else worked but the fact that the image grew on me. There is something to be said for leaving an image for a while and then coming back to it. and re-appraising it. What look just OK initially I realised would be really strong in black and white. Add to that the vertical lines of the columns leading the viewer into the image and the strong diagonal of the roof.

A Black and White conversion in Lightroom, some vignetting (did you notice it? Hope not, I aim that you should only see my vignettes when you are looking for them) and finally a bit of split toning and we’re done.

Self-portrait sitting on a garden bench

    (Image Reference: 20140120A-G01082)

Today is apparently “Blue Monday” – it is the day we are allegedly feeling at our lowest. Caused by the lack of daylight, post-Christmas blue, and post-Christmas bills. And it’s a Monday.

Try to find the opportunity to take some time out, breath deeply and slowly. Sit or walk in the garden for a while. Or take a photograph or two.

This is a simple ‘selfie’…. sorry… that’s so 2013. This is a simple self-portrait, processed heavily in Lightroom to give a very gritty feel to it. With the blue Monday theme, I adjusted the colour balance to make the image a little bluer.

  • POTD Wed, 22 Jan 2014: The Olde Vic 22 January 2014

The Olde Vic pub in Edgeley

I’m trying to set aside some time each day to actually create an image. I was looking for inspiration this morning and checked a few “this day in history” type websites. Today in 1901 Queen Victoria died.

That gave me my theme. Queen Victoria. Next did I have anything with Victoria on it knocking about the house? Nope no odd Penny Black stamps around. Anything Victoria related in the area? Google reminded me of “The Olde Vic” (formerly the Victoria Vaults) on the corner of Chatham Street in Edgeley. Brilliant I could swing by there easily on my travels.

The pub, like the monach it is named after looks as though it has died. No signs up outside and the exterior looks very much the worse for ware. Although I believe the pub is still operational and inside apparently looks a lot better than the outside.

The image has been processed with Nik Software’s Silver FX Pro to give the BW conversion.

  • POTD Thu, 23 Jan 2014: Coffee House 23 January 2014

    Barbacans Coffee House, Edgeley, Stockport

On January 23, 1996 the first version of the Java programming language was released. What on earth has this to do with my photo of the day, I hear you cry?

It is an example of how inspiration works. I am trying to set asside time each day to be creative and make at least one photograph. When I have a shoot it is easy, when I don’t I need inspiration, and what I have taken to doing is looking at what happened on this day in history. My reasearch led me to the obscure fact that the Java language is 18 years old today. It has, as they say, become an adult.

So my idea was to get some coffee beens and photograph them as some sort of tribute to the Java language. Now this is the first problem. I don’t drink coffee – can’t stand it – so no beens in the house. Never mind I’ll get some on my travels. I parked up just behind the coffee house in the photo and set off to the supermarket. Walking past the aforementioned building I thought. Coffee house! Coffee houe… java. That’ll do. No need to spend money on beens I’ll never use. Two minutes later I had my shot. And that, folks is how inspiration works. It is a chain or events that starts with a positive step. In this case me researching what happened on this day in history.

Post processing is lightroom initially (exposure brought in to range and verticals adjusted and cropped) and then passed off to HDR efex pro 2.

I am really enjoying working with Nik Software plugins for Lightroom and Photoshop. So much so that I am now really enjoying taking photos on dull, overcast, horrible weather days. For example this image of Heald Green United Reform Church was taken on a wet, rainy, dull, dark afternoon. The basic image wasn’t useable but after going through HDR Pro it is. Pills in a dosette box

Sometimes when doing a 365/POTD challenge I get stuck for what to shoot. At these time I revert back to my stock photography roots. Find a household object and photograph it as a stock image. In this case the dosette box with my daily supliments in it. It will be off to Alamy shortly. It may sell, it may not. If it does it may sell in days or it may be years. I have some images that have been with the library 10 years before they actually sell.
