- POTD Sat, 1 Mar 2014: Stay Stressed 1 March 2014
A mug with the message Stay Stressed and Give UpAfter a delayed start (due to a cold and a headache) I headed down to Rugby to stay with friends for a few days. My friends know me too well and a mug of tea was waiting for me on my arrival. Not sure about the message on the mug… I think I’m too stubborn and not bright enough to obey the instructions!

Silverstone Half Marathon 2014 souvenirsToday was Silverstone Half Marathon – it was touch and go as to whether I was going to be able to do it. I’m down with a (slight) cold. But after a good night’s sleep I decided to go anyhow. My PB is 2hrs 7min – I was amazed to finish in 2hrs 13mins and I managed to run the whole thing without walking any sections of it.

A ballon being popped by a dartEver wondered what a balloon looks like when it pops? At this week’s studio event we answered that question by photographing things that go bang.
My favourite from the night was a balloon burtings as we threw a dart through it. You can see other examples from the night here: http://photos.imb.biz/studio/bigbang including capturing party poppers.

Advertising Sites Intu Trafford CentreA return visit to the Intu Trafford Centre to get a few ‘pick-up’ shots that I didn’t manage to get on my first visit.
To create this image for my client I had to take three images. I wanted to get light trails on both sides of the car park entrance/exit. Unfortunately the traffic wasn’t cooperating and so I had shots with light trails on the left or with them on the right. Solution: layer the two together in photoshop and use the mask tool to enable the light trails from the lower layer to come though.
Next the advertising signs needed a different exposure to the ambient light. So that’s the third layer and again I used layers and masks in photoshop to bring them into the final image.
Lots of other similar techniques were used in creating the full set of images – you can see the full results from the shoot here: http://photos.imb.biz/client/intutrafford2

ModemThis POTD is pretty much a grab shot, but a grab shot with a purpose.
I was visiting my parents to fix/set up Dad’s internet connection. As it turned, depite what he thought Dad had managed to install and configure the modem correctly and there was nothing for me to do except a bit of general housekeeping on his PC.
This POTD is one of several shots I took of the modem, I wanted to make sure I had a record of the lights, labels, and conectons on the box. This means that if in the future I am providing Dad with telephone based support I can visualise the lights and describe any cables or switches that need to be unplugged, switched or proded.
As I said a grab shot… but a grab shot with a purpose.

Lace effect lamp shadeDecorating continues and we now have a new lamp shade in the dining room.
I only have one requirement to do with a lamp shade… that it actually lets the light out. Our previous ones didn’t (much to my frustraition) and when looking for replacements it was amazing how many lampshades appeared to be designed to need a 200W bulb to get about 20W of light out of them.
Despite the dark background in the photograph, the new lamp shade has no such issues, I am pleased to report!

Take My Hand a new Lifelines monologueSince the end of C3, Ann and I have been attending “Ivy Manchester”. Ivy is very different to C3, C3 at the end had 6 of us attending on a Sunday morning, Ivy has 400. Getting involved with Ivy is not without problems – largely due to its size.
Although C3 was a church that put creativity at the heart of it’s worship, the problems of the last couple of years had forced this to take lesser role.
Over the years I have written 80+ sketches and monologues for Lifelines and many of them have been performed around the world. However it has been years since I last wrote anything and I was beginning to think my writing days were over.
At Ivy, a sermon by Anthony Delaney, music from the worship team and by the end of the service. A picture in my mind and a key phrase. Inspiration to write. A new monologue written the same day. My first in about 4 or 5 years. Re-inspired. Reassurance that I’m in the right place churchwise.
If you want to read the monologue you can find it on the lifelines website: http://www.lifelines.org.uk/downloads/take-my-hand/ it is about the disciple Peter and his memories of Jesus walking on the water.

Didsbury Tesco car park at nightSometimes I struggle trying to do a photo every day. I struggled with this one. I was out doing some late night shopping at Tesco and decided to take my camera because I hadn’t taken anything for my POTD. I tried a couple of different night shots but it was way past the magic time for night shots and I wasn’t too happy with the results. In the end I went for an abstract image. A zoom blur of the light. It’s OK but not really what I was looking for as my POTD.

A camera with a bar towel over itOn my training courses I have often spoken about a technique for protecting your camera in the rain. It involves putting a small face cloth over the camera to protect it from any light rain. I have said that I believed a traditional bar towel would be better as it is just the right width to cover the camera an hang down enough to protect the sides.
Until recently I didn’t have a bar towel. A friend who did one of my courses remembered this and has just given me one to keep in my camera bag. Look who it is made by. So… if Carlsberg did make camera covers…..! (You know the rest of the quote).
