Frequently Asked Questions

Why am I doing this?

Why did I start this site?  Well to be honest there are a number of reasons.

Firstly, as a professional stock photographer I wanted something which would encourage me to go out and take at least one photograph everyday.  Whether this site will actually make that happen only time will tell.

Secondly, I’m in the process of developing a web development system called iMenu.  iMenu enables you to create and mainatin your website with only the use of a browser.  I needed a real world site to test my software on.  This web is the very first fully functional iMenu website.

Thirdly, I consider myself to be fortunate to have friends all arround the world.  Some of whom I have never met face to face, but I have spent time talking to on-line.  This web diary will provide them with a way to see how I’m getting on.

What is POTD?

What do the initals POTD in the web address mean?  Nothing to sinister… Picture (or Photo) Of The Day

Where can I get the Blogging Software From?

The simple answer is from me.  I’ve written the software myself. it is part of a content management system, called iMenu, that can be used to create and maintain websites. (And yes the whole of this website is created using  iMenu)  If you like what you see and want your own blog/iMenu website, I’m happy to set you up with a free, three month, no obligations trial.  After that time the cost is £110 per year.  That includes the use of iMenu for you to maintain your site and a domain name.

If you are interested send me an email at webs@2fields.co.uk

Newsletters & Twitter
I publish a number of email newsletter.  These include news and offers for existing and prospective customers and also newsletters for other photographers which give details of photographic techniques and news of events and training I offer to other photographers.

You can also get photographic information from me via twitter.

Ian’s Photo Diary

Hello, welcome to my POTD (Photo of the Day) website.  POTD is really a site within a site.  I am a professional photographer (as well as a writer and web designer) and POTD was set up a little while ago as a show case for my photography.  It was originally website in its own right, but it makes more sence being part of my main Photography website.

It is also a place where each day I can show off/share what I’ve been doing… or if the day has not been so good, have a good old rant!

FREE* Family Portrait Days

The 2006 Free Family Portrait Days have now taken place.  We are planing to run similar events again in 2007.  Please check back here in the future.  Alternatively you may want to consider booking for one of our Home Studio Days.

(* FREE means no booking/sitting fee – you just pay for the prints you order)

The Dates

2007 dates will be posted here when announced.

Home studio days are days when customers can book a one hour portrait session.  These sessions take place at my home studio.  (2 Tennyson Close).  These sessions can be for family portraits (up to 6 people), couples, or individuals.  Unfortuately we cannot do pet portraits on these days.

Because you have a full hour available to you there is plenty of time to experiment with different types of photographs, different poses, and even different outfits, clothes, or costumes.

With more time, and being in the comfort of a home these sessions are much more relaxed than the “Free Framily Portrait Days” that we we run.

What’s the cost?

These is a £25 sitting fee for the home studio days.  This payable on the day.  After that you just pay for the photographs you choose to order.

When Are They?

We currently have the following sessions scheduled:

Saturday 20th January 2007
First home studio day of the new year.

February Half-Term
I will be organising a home studio day for half-tem week.  Please check back for more details shortly.

Special Processing

Modern digital techniques allow images to be easily treated to produce a number of different photographic effects.

  • Black & White – Even though digital images are taken in colour, it is possible to reproduce that image as though it was a black and white photograph.  Some photographs/subjects can look more ‘classic’ when treated in this way.
  • Sepia Tone – Sepia tone renders the image in ‘brown and white’.  It gives a photograph an old-fashioned early 20th Century look to it.
  • Black & White plus Colour –This effect is only possible using digital techniques.  Here the photograph is converted to black and white, but one or more details in this photograph are left in colour.
  • Vignette – A vignette is a fading or shading of the edges of the photograph.  This is most frequently a fade to white, however it is possible to do this to any colour, depending on the effect desired.  A vignette can be used alone or it can be combined with any of the other processes described.

The following is a list of the charges for special processing (*)..  Please note this is now charged per copy of each photograph.

Organisations

Every organisation is different.  A portrait sessions will be tailored to your needs and requirements.  Toddler Groups may want to offer to parents the opportunity for professional portraits of their children.  Schools may want class photos as well as photographs of each student.  Dance or Drama groups require cast photographs and production stills.  For more on services offered to organisations please see the Organisations page.

Most years I run a number of Family Portrait Events.  These are typically in the autumn round October or November.  For more information please see my Family Portrait Day Page

Your Personal Portrait Session

Whether it is children, families, individuals, or pets.  I offer a portrait service to suite your needs and you pocket.

Home Studio

Price £60 (£30 sitting fee, plus minimum order of £30 of prints)

For small groups (up 4 or 5 people) I prefer to us my home based studio.  Working in my home studio gives greater flexability as to the types of props and background that are available for the session.  For example the large white paper background that most customers perfer cannot be used in many homes.

It should be noted that I have two cats at home, and because of this I am not able to accept bookings for pet portraits at my home studio.  Aditionally any one with a cat allergy may wish to consider using my mobile studio service.

Special Processing

Modern digital techniques allow images to be easily treated to produce a number of different photographic effects. Such as Sepia Tone, Black & White plus colour and composite Images.  For more information on these techniques and to see example visit my Special Processing Page.

Prices

My price structure has been chosen to give you the greatest flexibility. Without any pre-defined photograph packages, you can order precisely what you want, whether it is a lot of small photos to give to friends and relatives or just one special one to hang over the fireplace. The choice is yours.

The price consists of two parts, firstly there is the sitting/booking fee.  That ranges from £25-£35 depending on whether we are using my home studio or whether I’m coming out to your home.  There is then a minimum order of £30.00 worth of prints.  Both the booking fee and the minimum amount is paid at the photo session.  When you then place your order for prints we will deduct £30 from the price of the order.

For up to date print prices please see the separate price list.

Mileage

If I have to travel to a location for the shoot, I may have to charge mileage.  For most locations in the Stockport area I don’t charge any mileage.  However if you are over 7 miles away, I may add on a mileage charge of 30p per mile for the round trip.

Viewing the proofs

I always recomend you view the photographs on a password protected website. This means you can view the photographs at your leisure, before deciding which photographs you would like to buy. The photographs can be ordered directly from this web site.

For those customers who prefer paper proofs small 5 x 7 cm printouts of the images can be sent to you to make your selection from.

Whichever method you select, I will ‘edit out’ any failed shots (subject blinking etc) before presenting you with the proofs.

Organisations and Schools

Mobile Studio

Price £65 (£35 sitting fee, plus minimum order of £30 of prints)

Children, pets and some adults will be more relaxed in familiar surroundings, therefore, if you prefer, photographs can be taken in your own home.  It should be noted that full range of props and backgrounds may not be available.  For example  most homes cannot accomodate the large white paper backdrop.

A selection of different coloured cloth backgrounds can be used with the mobile studio, but sometimes the best photos can be taken using features in your home as the backdrop.  Fireplaces, sofas, chairs, and even stair cases can make good backgrounds for your portraits.

On Location

Price £55 (£25 sitting fee, plus minimum order of £30 of prints)

As an alternative to studio based sessions, portraits can easily be arranged at outdoor locations, such as parks or even in your own garden.  Because such sessions do not require the use of backdrops and studio lights, I am able to offer sessions at a slightly reduced price.

Discussing what you want

Before any photographs are taken we will want to discuss the type of photographs you are looking for. I will bring some example photographs and we can discuss what you like and don’t like. Whether you want a formal photograph or a more informal one, I can then tailor the shoot accordingly.

Normally this discussion will only take about 10 minutes and will be done at the start of the session.

The Portrait Session

If the session is at my home studio, the studio will be set up before you arrive.

If however I am visiting your home and we are shooting inside, it usually takes about 20 minutes for me to set up my studio lights and background if one is to be used.. If young children are to be photographed you may want to have a game or toy for them to play with during this time, so that he or she isn’t bored before we even start.

There is no limit to the number of poses or shots taken at a session.  Typically we would spend 15-20 minutes taking photographs.  However, if you want longer I am happy to keep shooting for up to an hour, so there is plenty of time for you to have shots with lots of differnt props, different poses or even differnent clothing if you wish.

If I’m visiting your home, please allow 20 minutes after the session for me to dismantal and pack away the mobile studio.

I can organise portrait session for different types of organisations. These include:

  • Toddler Groups
  • Schools
  • Dog Obedience Groups
  • Drama Groups
  • Dance Groups

Such session have a minimum requirement of 10 or more subjects (this is not usually a problem).

Sessions are tailored for your groups requirements, if the session is to be just for members of your group, you may wish to combine the photo session with your groups normal activities.  This sort of set up works well for toddler groups or schools where children are already present and can be photographed in turn.

Alternatively you may wish the session to be open to the general public, or to be at a different time to your normal meeting.  In such cases it is best for people to book an appointment slot.  In such cases I can offer you the use of my on-line booking system to track those appointments.  For those wishing to book an appointment but who don’t have internet access I can reserve times available for telephone booking.

It is, of course,  possible for groups to use such an event as a fund raiser.  There are several ways to go about this.

  • The group could charge a small ‘sitting fee’ on the day of the shoot, which they collect.
  • I can add a small fixed charge to each order which will then be paid to the group.
  • The prints can be sold using my fundraiser price list.

Special Processing

Modern digital techniques allow images to be easily treated to produce a number of different photographic effects.  This page describes a number of different ways that a single image can be processed.  These include:

Black and White

Even though an photograph was taken on colour film, it is possible to reproduce that image as though it was a black and white photograph.  Some photographs/subjects can look more ‘classic’ when treated in this way.

Sepia Tone

Sepia tone renders the image in ‘brown and white’ it gives a photograph an old-fashioned early 20th Centaury look to it.  (This example shows the effect combined with a vignette).

Black and White Plus Colour

This effect is only possible using digital techniques.  Here the photograph is converted to black and white, but one or more details in this photograph are left in colour.  The example of this process on the following pages has the subjects of the photograph in colour but the background in black and white.  This has the effect of drawing the viewers attention to the subjects and away from the background.  Other possibilities for this technique may be a person with a bouquet of flowers where the only colour is the flowers.

Vignette

A vignette is a fading or shading of the edges of the photograph, this is most frequently a fade to white (as illustrated), however other it is possible to do this to any colour, depending on the affect desired.  A vignette can be used alone or it can be combined with any of the other processes described.

Combining

Two or more images are digitally combined to provide the final image.  The same technique can be used to create a number of different effects.  This technique can sometimes be used to, say, select the best shots of different people and combine into a single image.

Other Special Effects

The number of special effects that are possible is limited only by the combined imaginations of the photographer and his customers.  For example a framing effect is created by using elements of the photograph.  This may be using a section of the background and having the subjects intersect it.  Other effects may include combining the photograph with pen, chalk, or watercolour effects etc.

The effects can be applied to any of the photographs that were taken.  The prices  for special processing can be found in the price list.

Weddings

I offer 3 different wedding packages, each of which can be enhanced or modified to suit your requirements.

Basic Package [ Price £575 ]

This package is designed for couples who have a more modest budget for their wedding photography.  The package includes everything you need to have a professionally produced 20 page wedding album.  Your wedding album is expandable up to 40 pages, and all the photographs taken will be archived, so that you can always add extra pages to the album in the future – perhaps to celebrate a special wedding anniversary? [More Information]

Standard Package [ Price £700 ]

This package will meet the requirements of most couples.  It includes everything you need to have a professionally produced 30 page wedding album.  It is designed to be more flexible than the basic package so that you get exactly the wedding album you are looking for.  [More Information]

Reportage Package [ Price £999 ]

This package is designed for those couples looking for something a little out of the ordinary for their wedding album.  Photography style and presentation is designed to reflect the reporting of a celebrity wedding.  In addition to the usual posed photographs there is an emphasis on candid photography – capturing images of the day as it happens.  These, along with the posed photographs, are then combined into photo montages and displayed in a 30 page image book.  [More Information]

–oo00oo–

All packages include a password protected on-line proof album to enable family and friends anywhere in the world to see your wedding photographs.  You and your friends and family can order additional prints directly from this secure website.

For all packages I try to have your proof album available by the time you return from honeymoon, or within two weeks if your honeymoon is shorter than that.  The proof album should be returned within one month.

All photographs are taken using a professional standard digital SLR camera.  This enables images to be digitally enhanced.

To book any of the packages a £100 deposit is required.  Once paid the deposit reserves the day in my diary.  No other weddings or photographic sessions will be booked for that date.  The balance is paid in two instalments – the first on delivery of the proof album.  The final instalment is only paid on delivery of the completed wedding album.

No two weddings are alike, thus the packages described above are just the starting point for designing how best your day will be recorded.

Stock Photography

What is stock photography?  Stock photography is where a photographer takes photographs ‘on spec’ and lodges the images with a photographic library.  When a buyer wants a particular image they visiti the library search for images of a particular subject.  If they find what they are looking for the buyer purchases from the library.  The library takes a percentage of the fee and passes the rest to the photographer.

Model Shoot Ideas

Outside – Female

Bride outside a church.  – Need a model with a wedding dress!

Banging on door.

Sitting dejected on the steps.

Holding a blank sign (so words can be added on the sign by purchaser),

General shots of bride (typical wedding poses),

Bride on mobile phone.

Bride looking at a map outside closed church.

New Mills / Torrs / Millennium Walkway / Torr Vale Mill

Really looking for a conventional looking model (no visible tatoos or peircings for this one).

A number of good spots round this area for ‘fashion style’ and ‘location’ shoots.

Including urban decay contrasting with beauty of model near the derelict mill

Steps and river bank at start of Millennium Walkway

On the rocks/quarry area near walk way

On the mill ruins near the Torrs.

With MX5 (My car)

Currently don’t have a suitable location to do this shoot – if you know a suitable location please let me know

Sitting in driving seat, with roof down, sunspecs on – as though driving.

Leaning against car looking at road map.  (looking confused)

Car bonnet up, looking in (as though the car has broken down)

Changing wheel.  (Actively doing so.  Confident and not really sure what to do)

Next to flat tyre, spare wheel and car jack – hoping someone will come to rescue.

Would be possible to combine this with some glamour style shots if that is what the model wanted.

Beach Shoot – Crosby Beach

I have been wanting to go over to Crosby (near Liverpool) for a while to take some photos of the Anthony Gormley’s “Another Place” statues. (The beach with the 100 lifesize metal figures on it). Should make an interesting location for a shoot

It would be just a little differnt to the normal set of beach photos. I believe there are some sand dunes there as well for the classic beach type shots.

Commercial Ideas – Female Model

Business woman with laptop

Done some versions of these now – could still do a few more but it is low priority (ie only do these as a secondary theme to a shoot)

Holding laptop in one hand mouse in the other.

Using laptop lying on the floor

Laptop on desk – model looking horrified at what is on screen

Forehead resting on keyboard

General shots of using a computer

Laptop in one hand mallet in the other (threatening to strike laptop).

Business woman (general)

Different expressions/moods (triumphant; leaping in the air; sitting looking depressed; bored; defiant; bossy; looking over specs)

Tearing up a piece of paper labeled  “contract”

On the phone.

Checking watch.

Sitting in office chair (could also use chair with laptop set ups above)

Holding handfuls of money – indicating success.

Business suit and boxing gloves.

Headache

Close up of face.  Hands to temples.

Holding a glass of water and a couple of tables in the other hand.

Debt/Bills – Done as a studio shot with Jess, need to do location versions.

Woman sitting on floor surrounded by bills, looking worried (version with calculator, pen and paper)

Sitting back to front door surrounded by bills, on floor.  Yet more bills are sticking out of the letter box

Lifestyle – sitting at table looking at bills, using calculator, pen paper

Food

Note: For some of these shots there are optional messy versions.  I am happy to shoot the clean versions without doing the messy versions if a model only wants to do the clean versions.

Model holding 5 different fruit and veg

Eating some of the above – eg a carrot, or apple.

Holding and looking longingly at a bar of chocolate

Large wrapper with only one square of chocolate left – model looking guilty

Biting the corner of a bar of chocolate

With a bowl of cereal (also close up on bowl; bowl in one hand spoon in the other; pouring milk on to cereal)

Holding glass of water (hold high in shot so that face and water visible; drinking from the glass)

Glass of milk, glass of orange juice (similar setups to the glass of water shot)

Messy Food/Cream Cake

Note: I have done a number of these already, but none where the model has got *very* messy with food/cream/chocolate.   Typically the clean versions would also be done in the same shoot.

Single cube of chocolate left in wrapper, model trying to look innocent but obvious chocolate round mouth.

With a bowl of cereal (pouring milk on to cereal – milk splashing over the sides)

Glass of milk, (similar setups to the glass of water shot) Don’t forget “milk moustache” shot).

Messily drinking the milk – milk running down chin?

Drinking milk with milk running down body (model could be in swimwear, underwear or possibly topless?)

Eating strawberry with cream running off it (close up of strawberry over mouth. Cream running down chin?)

Licking cream off a large slice of cake (blob of cream on nose?)

Eating slice of cake with cream oozing out the sides

Cake stand with a few crumb on it. Model looking guilty with cream round mouth.

Gluttony – holding one slice of cake in one hand while messily eating another slice.

Holding slice of cake with cream running down models arm.

Eating/holding chocolate gataux in a sexy/provocative way… lots of chocolate on the model.

Ice cream cone on models head with ice cream melting over model’s face.

“Egg on face” –  raw egg smashed on head with a yoke running down face.  (To illustrate “Don’t be left with egg on your face”)

Chocolate and Cream (Very Messy)

Art nude photos of a model with lines of chocolate source poured over her body.

Similar idea but using both chocolate source and cream, the idea being to have alternate lines of light and dark (hopefully not too much intermingling of the two).  I’d be interested to get torso shots with the lines of source and cream running over from shoulder over breasts.  Might be interesting to do naked breasts this way but also hands over breasts as the liquids run over fingers.  I’d also like to do head/face done the same way, and possibly back and bum too.

Custard/Pie Fight

Two models, possibly in bikinis?  Staged, stage custard/pie fight.  High key, white background style.  Emphasis on photographing reactions of the models and capturing the laughter and fun of the fight.

One model – in ‘posh frock’ and classy make-up.  Shots in the style of an old slapstic comedy pie fight.  Eg pie on side of face.  Posed as though about to throw a pie.  Emphasis definately on the model reactions.  Needs a model who is able to give a good range of facial expressions, from indignation to enjoyment.

Temptation – Done with Jess but may be worth doing again with different angles (eg view from above)
Holding an apple and looking longingly at it. (Temptation/Garden of Eden idea: Would work best if the model appears nude/topless – shoot topless but with arm/apple positioned in front of breasts).
Offering apple toward to the camera. (also do a wide angle shot to give a distorted image, version with max depth of field)
Taking a bite from the apple
Holding apple in to chest
Etc

Measurement / Size – shot with AJD but worth doing again with a model with a different look.

Model holding a tape measure round waist (looking disappointed, looking pleased, looking alarmed.  close up of just the tape, hands and waist).

Similar shots with tape measure round hips.

Similar shots with tape measure round chest  (Like to do an implied topless version of this – hands and tape measure covering breasts)

Standing on scales looking alarmed/pleased

Woman Boxer

Done some of these but would be happy to do some more

Woman in evening wear with boxing gloves

Casual wear with boxing gloves

Topless boxer (topless and implied topless) and implied nude boxer

Sports top and tracksuit bottoms

Gloves forming a heart shape with model looking through it.

Nude rear view boxing gloves over shoulder

Body Parts (ie we don’t see the whole model)

Extreme close up of  eyes and lips.

A bare arm provocatively dangling a bra or knickers.

Bare arm holding a set of hand cuffs.

A clenched fist

Feet and legs (high heels and fishnet tights/stockings?) – close up of feet.  Shot through legs (spy who loved me style).

Legs.  Removing a stocking (The graduate film poster style).

Hands typing on a computer keyboard.  (freeze the action, blur the action)

Hand using a computer mouse

Hand indicating 1, 2, 3, 4 – hand in a “Stop” position.

Hand indicating direction

Hand making rude gestures  (ie 2 fingers up or middle finger up)

Wet look and rain

I’ve been experimenting with studio based wet-look images and adding digital rain later.  Looking more at commercial styles here, but would be happy to combine this with some wet-look glamour shots if that is what the model wants for her folio.  The type of shot would be model sheltering from rain with coat or newspaper over head.  Laughing, enjoying being in the rain (wearing a soaking dress).  Close up of face with wet hair and water droplets on face.

Professional Tradeswoman

Wearing overalls, wellies or protective shoes, hard hat, and carrying tool box or power tools

Holding a paint brush and paint tin

Holding plans (rolled up, bundles of paper).

Domestic chores

Series of images of a model doing various domestic tasks such as…

Ironing, washing up, laudry, hoovering, sweeping up, dusting

I’d like to do both stylised images against a white background and more realistic lifestyle images using real locations/homes

DIY

As for tradeswoman, except the clothing would be dungarees or an oversized shirt.  Pumps rather than protective shoes.

Can do two versions person looking confident and knowledgeable, and version looking bemused.

Painting

Two different types of shots based round painting.  Lifestyle one in a home that is actually in the process of being decorated.  Model doing the painting, similar clothing to the DIY shots above.

The other would be with more revealing clothing.

Use ready mixed childs poster paint (it aledgedly washes off easily) to get shots of model with paint splashes and possibly some painted hand prints on her body.

Holiday – Small selection done with Terri

Wearing summer holiday clothes (light coloured, vest type top, hat, sunspecs, sandles)

Carrying heavy suitcases

Sitting on suitcases looking at watch. (flight delays)

Close-up holding as passport.

As above but wearing bikini top

In beach wear but sheltering under an umbrella.

Applying sun cream.

Drinking a cocktail with an umbrella in it.

Sun lounger (could be white background or garden or real location)

Sun lounger covered in towels (as though as a health spa)

Model lying face down on the lounger with  towel draped over her.  Various shots from full length to close up on face.

Sitting up on sun lounger, wet hair, wearing a bath robe.

Lying down wearing swimwear.

Fitness/Health

Wearing shorts/vest, doing various exercises (side bends, touching toes) Shot with AJD – may shoot again but low priority.

Towel round neck, drinking bottled water

Sitting applying moisturizing cream to shoulder/upper arm.

Implied Nude with Signs – black back ground versions done with Jess, need to do a white background version.

Sign are blank so photo buyers can add their own message(s)

Holding Large sign covering everything (only arms, legs and head & shoulder visible)

Holding Medium size sign – Everything covered but a bit more daring

Two smaller signs, one covers breasts, the other the crotch.

Rear view of model  holding sign over bum (Poss labeled as “The End”?)

(Implied) Nude Model with no signs one hand over breasts other over crotch – shocked expression on face.  (as though someone has just stolen the signs from her)

Lifestyle

Looking for a model with one or more stylish rooms to photograph in.  The rooms can be just about any room in the house (Lounge, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom), the idea is to use the surrounding to create various lifestyle shots.

Lounge this would be things like sitting in front of the tv with remote in hand, laughing, crying etc.  Using a lap top.  Drinking a cup of tea,

Bedroom it could be making the bed, sleeping, waking up, turning of alarm.  Selecting outfits from wadrobe, looking in to mirror.

Bathroom would be bath shots, relaxing, shower, model with towel etc.  (Bathroom shots don’t have to be nude or topless, but would be easier to shoot with a model who is comfortable shooting nude)

Art, Nude & Glamour – Female (studio)

Cindy Crawford/Shaving foam look
Recently saw an image of Cindy Crawford posing in Shaving foam:
http://www.buzzchow.com/culture/cindy-crawford-in-allure/
Thought it would be interesting to create something along these lines.

Bodyscapes
Interested in trying some classy black and white bodyscape images.  Black background back lighting.  Attempting to get the outline of the body.  Probably convert to black and white.

Art Nude
Black and white art nude images of nude model holding one prop.  Eg an umberella, head phones, carrying trainers, wearing a top hat (I have a top hat!) etc.  Probably will work best as rear view.  But would probably try a range of poses.

Sticky Tape (Implied Nude)
Posed images of a model with “fragile”, “handle with care”, or hazard tape covering boobs, bum etc.  (Ok, I know it’s been done a million times, but I’ve never done it!)

Lifestyle – Male/Female

Sensual
Implied topless poses of couple kissing and in various sensual embraces (white background and black background).  Various poses possible, open to ideas from the models.   I have print outs of example photos too.

Seduction/Distraction  – Tried this with Sammy  & Gav but need to redo with other models.

Sitting on sofa or on a bed.  Man is more interested in phone/lap top/watching TV.  Woman is trying to seduce him.

Photos of her with arms round – he is clearly not interested.  Dangling bra provocatively, him moving it to one side because it is blocking his view of laptop or tv.

She sitting arms folded, fed up at being ignored.

Various versions possible with her in various stages of undress, up to topless/implied topless.

Office – Sexual harassment – Some done with RaYzor and Stelios

Woman at desk, man stand over her looking down her cleavage.  Arm round her, she pushing him away.  Her slapping him.

Standing She holding files and folders, him with hand on her bum

Him sat in chair, her provocatively dressed, with her knee between his legs and holding his tie – He tries to resist her.

Her standing behind him with had inside his shirt.

Office affairs and flings – Most of these done with RaYzor and Stelios

Couple at desk kissing.

Him sat in chair, her provocatively dressed, with her knee between his legs and holding his tie – He is clearly enjoying this.

Man in suit and tie on floor with papers scattered around him, topless woman (could be implied topless depending by careful choice of angles), clambering over him, holding his tie.

Couple in business suits in a passionate embrace

Couple in business suits in a passionate embrace but with trousers and skirt round their ankles.

Bed

Can be shot either in a bedroom or perhaps better on a seamless white background studio with sheets and pillows.

Couple in various embraces – the emphasis being on relaxation rather than sexual.

One sleeping while the other looks on.

White Background – Male Model

Business Man – DONE with Mike

Office – business suit. Efficient businessman, on the phone, sitting in a office chair. Relaxing in office chair. Working on laptop.

Businessman holding a wad of money – indicating success

Businessman in suit but with boxing gloves on – competitiveness, success, winning the deal etc.

Model Shoot Ideas – Older Couple

Working in a garden together (retirement)

Him handing her a rose

Holding hands.  (distant shot, silhouette, close up of hands)

Sitting in garden reading newspaper or drinking tea or sipping wine.

Gardening, holding back (back pain)

Watering the garden with a watering can (view from behind only half in frame, from front, from the side)

Tending a bush with money attached to it (pension funds, looking after money for retirement etc)

PhotoMaps

I am currently developing a new method for customers to view and purchase my photographs.  This is by using “PhotoMaps”.  These are maps of locations which contain markers to locations containing photographs.  These markers can be clicked on to display the photographs and information about them.

I’m still developing and trying out different methods for displaying PhotoMaps – here are links to some of the methods….

Demo 1 –  PhotoMap:Rome (Google Maps) This map also contains links to Alamy where the photographs can be purchased.  If you have GoogleEarth installed on your PC you can also view this map in GoogleEarth by clicking here

Demo 2 – PhotoMap:Egypt (Flickr) – At the time of writing this map is still being developed and doesn’t have links to stock libraries.  Egypt is a large country and this map works best if you zoom in on one of the areas which have images in them.

Demo 3 – PhotoMap:Rome (Flickr) – A different selection of Rome images, displayed though flickr.  This doesn’t yet have links to the the stock libraries.

Demo 3 – PhotoMap:UK (Wayfaring.com) – This is an old map that covers a number of photos in the UK.  The links in the map come back to POTD entrires on this site.

This method of displaying photographs is still in the demo stage, and I would appreciate feedback on the PhotoMaps from customers and visitors to the site.

Performer Portfolios

Actors, recording artists and models all need photographs to promote themselves.  This can be anything from a selection of headshots to go with a CV to whole range of different promotional images.

Background

When doing portraiture, I, like most photographers, normally make my money from the sale of actual prints. In the case of a performer’s portfolio typically digital copies are required… as a result no print sales.  Thus the price has to reflect the fact that there won’t be print sales.

I offer three ‘packages’ which should meet most needs.  However if you want something a little different, let me know and we can tailor things to meet your exact requirements.

About Me

I am predominately a stock photographer and working with models is relatively new to me. I’m currently looking to create images which I can sell through stock libraries such as Alamy.  I prefer to work on a TFCD basis when producing stock photos as there is never any guarantee that the images will sell (Typically only 1% – 2% of images submitted as stock will sell)

Home Studio

I’m based in Heaton Mersey, Stockport and have a small studio which I usually set up at home but it is portable and can be used in different locations.

For studio work I prefer to work at home as I know the lights and backdrops will fit in the lounge/dining room, which I use as my studio.  If you need me to bring the studio to you please let me know what space is available.

Please note that I have two cats.  They will be excluded from the studio during the shoot.  However occasionally people with cat allergies have been known to have problems.  If you have a problem with cats please let me know (photos of models with streaming eyes don’t look great!).

Model Release Form

In order to sell the images through photographic libraries I will need you to sign a model release form.  I am only able to offer TFCD shoots on condition that you are willing to sign a model release.

Please can you bring ID with you so that I can confirm you are over 18 and that the details on the model release form are accurate.

Chaperones

Models are welcome to bring a chaperone to the shoot.  Chaperones are not permitted to take their own photos during the shoot.

Models under 18

I will only do shoots with models who are under 18 if a parent or legal guardian is present throughout the shoot.  You need to confirm before the shoot that your parent/guardian is willing to sign your model release form.

Your Photos on CD

I will let you have copies of all the usable images. (I will edit out any blurred shots, blinks, times the flash didn’t go off etc – believe me they all happen!).  Additionally where there are multiple near identical images I will edit to select only the best one or two of that pose.

Depending on my workload at the time of the shoot it may take a week or more to prepare the final CD of images for you.  If you need certain shots by a particular date please let me know and I will try to ensure that you get at least those by that time.

Copyright and Model Use of Photographs

The copyright for the photos remains with the photographer.  This is the legal position, the industry standard and nothing to worry about.  You may use the images supplied in any way that promotes you as a model, providing that you are not selling the photographs or selling licenses for their use in any way.

If you do come across someone who wishes to pay to use the images, please let me know and we can negotiate terms so that it will be favourable to both of us.

Web use: If you use the photos on a website promoting your modelling services, I would appreciate it if you could give me a credit as follows: “Photograph by Ian M Butterfield / www.imb.biz” – I understand that this will not always be possible on some portfolio websites.

Fees and Travelling Expenses

By definition TFCD work is not paid work as such (payment is in the form of the images supplied on CD).  Travelling Expenses will only be paid if they have been agreed in advance.

What to wear / outfits

Normally we will have discussed the type of outfit before the shoot and agreed what you need to bring.   In general terms if you are asked to bring an outfit please avoid anything that has a manufactures label or logo visible.  Images containing company names and logos cannot be used for stock.

If you have more than one outfit that is suitable for the shoot please bring a small selection.  This gives us alternatives and a gives a variety of looks in your folio.

Don’t forget to bring suitable footwear to go with your outfit(s).

Make up and Hair

I don’t have a make up artist or hair stylist.  Please assume that you will need to do your own make up and hair unless told otherwise.   If you do make up and hair before coming to the shoot be sure to bring a comb/brush and sufficient make up for any last minute adjustments.

Suggestions for photos and poses

I will try to direct you during the shoot to the best of my ability, but please feel free to make suggestions for photos, poses, angles etc.  The shoot should be of mutual benefit to both of us, so don’t be afraid to come up with ideas.

This is a test page.  But I still wanted to put some text in the margin so that the layout looked good.

Theatre Photography

Theatre is emotion. Theatre is experience.  Theatre is ephemeral.

Once the curtain falls it remains only as a picture in the memory of those who took part and in the memory of those who watched.  Over time our memories fade and we remember only the broad brush strokes of that picture.

Good theatre photography will capture the details and keep them alive.  Production photographs will provide a valuable resource and reference for future.  It is a record of not only what the set and costumes looked like but how they were lit in each scene.

For many productions the performing licence prohibits the show or play from being recorded on video.  As a result often the only lasting record of a production is the photographs taken of it.   Even when video is legal and possible, it is the still image that can really capture the emotion of a scene.  The look in the eyes of an actor frozen in time can have an immense impact.

All theatre groups require publicity:  press releases, posters, flyers, listings and adverts.  All of these look better and are more likely to “catch the eye” if accompanied by high quality, striking photographs.

My Experience

I have been providing photographic services to theatre since 2006.  In the first three years I have photographed 25 different productions.  I am the official photographer for Stockport Garrick Theatre.

My theatre photographs have appeared in local newspapers to accompany show write-ups.  A photograph I took of Sir Ian McKellen was used as the cover for “Amateur Stage” magazine in 2008.

Theatre – Services Offered

Every show and theatre company has different requirements and I am able to provide a full range of photographic services to meet the needs of any theatre company – professional or amateur.

Production Photography

These are photographs taken of a show as it is being performed – typically this will be done during a full-dress rehearsal.  Photographing the dress rehearsal means that I am able to move around the auditorium to get interesting angles for the images.  This is done as discreetly as possible.  As an (amateur) actor myself I understand the need to be as unobtrusive as possible so as not to distract performers while they are rehearsing or performing.  I frequently have actors comment to me that they were unaware of me taking photographs despite the fact that I was only a few feet away from them.

In the event I am requested to photograph a public performance, photographs will only be taken from pre-agreed locations – typically from the back of the auditorium so that there is no distraction to audience members.

Production photographs are never taken using flash.  My aim is to capture the mood and emotion of the piece of theatre that is being performed.  This is best done using the available stage lighting.

In Rehearsal

Photographs taken at different stages of the rehearsal process serve to document the creation of a piece of theatre.  Such images are also useful for inclusion in programmes and in foyer displays.

The style and presentation of such photographs can be tailored to the needs of a production.  I have found that a black and white reportage style works particularly well for “In Rehearsal” photographs.

Cast Photos

Many theatres like to have photographs of each member of cast either on display in the theatre or included in the programme.  These can be simple head shots or, if you use my custom design service the images can be created specifically for the production.  Among the more memorable sets I have produced include a cast photos in the style of “Cluedo” cards for an Agatha Christie  whodunit, and each member of cast displayed on a different book cover for a play set in a bookshop.

Publicity Photos

Some theatres promote productions by use of publicity images created specifically for a show.  These can be rehearsal or production photos. Sometimes it is necessary to get publicity photographs out weeks or months in advance.  In such situations an effective solution is to take photographs of key cast members in costume at locations similar to those that will be recreated on stage, outside the theatre or even in a photographic studio.

Custom Designs

I have been producing custom cast photos, photo montages and custom display prints for the last few years.  Examples of the type of custom designs include the following:

  • Cast photos in the style of “Cluedo” cards for an Agatha Christie Whodunit.
  • Cast photos in the style of ID passes for a play set in a prison
  • Cast montage for Separate Tables, including two actors twice as they each play two different roles.
  • Framed photo-montage of images from a show, and cast photos, as a gift from cast members to their director.
  • “Spot coloured” images for display in theatre foyer.  Each photo for “Oh What a Lovely War” was black and white but with one detail picked out in red.  For “Dealing with Clair” a similar technique was used but picking out a turquoise blue detail.

Display Prints

By using professional, high quality inkjet printing I can produce large display prints for use on display boards and foyer displays, usually within 24 hours of photographing a production.  The maximum size of such print is 19x13inches (329x483mm).  Larger sizes can be produced using third-party printing companies but these may take longer to produce.

Web Albums

Low resolution copies of the photographs taken can be posted to a web album on my website.  These albums can be password-protected or visible to the general public as required.  You can use the albums as a means of viewing the photographs to decide which images you wish to use.  The albums, if required, can also be used to enable cast members and crew to order prints.

Photo DVDs

Photo DVDs are “a new and exciting way to  keep the memories of your show alive!

The DVD contains digital high resolution copies of ALL processed photographs from the production AND a video slide show you can watch on  your TV.

  • The disk includes high resolution JPG images are suitable for use as PC wallpaper and viewing or printing on your computer.  Included on the disk   will be ALL processed photographs from the show. (typically 100+ images). This includes any rehearsal photos and cast photos that were taken.
  • Insert the disk into any DVD player and you will be able to view a professionally produced video slide presentation of images from the production.  This will include all suitable images from the production. Typical length of the presentation will be 7-15 minutes depending on the number of suitable photographs.

Individual Prints

Members of the cast and crew can order prints from a production in one of two ways.  If you have chosen to have a web album orders may be placed and paid for on line.  Additionally a selection of thumbnail proofs along with paper order forms can be delivered to the theater.  Orders placed within three days of the end of a run will normally be processed and the prints delivered to the theatre for the final night of the production run.  Orders can still be placed after that time and prints will sent by post.

Please contact me for a price list for ordering theatre prints.

Additional Photographers

In addition to myself I have a team of four photographers all of whom I have trained in theatre photography.  For some productions you may wish to have more than one photographer.  For example if the only opportunity to photograph the production is during a public performance you may wish to have two or more photographers cover the event.  This enables photographs to be taken from different angles without any potential distraction to the audience from a photographer moving about the auditorium.  Even when the production is being photographed as a dress rehearsal, having multiple photographers covering it will give you a wider choice of angles for the production photographs.

Having a team of photographers available means that in the event that I cannot personally cover a particular production a member of my team will be available to cover it on my behalf.  You do not have to start ringing round to find a replacement.

Training and Events

I am currently planing and booking a series of photographic training events.  Dates and locations for these events have not been set yet.  If you are interested in any particular event or training please contact me, as I will be giving priority to planing those events where there is the most interest.

The training events I am planing include:

An Introduciton to Digital Photography – Wednesday Evenings from Starting in 21st April 2010.  7.30pm till 10.00pm  Venue KRO Bar, Heaton Moor Road, Heaton Moor.  Stockport.  Aimed at new photographers and those wishing to consolodate their photography skills.  This course consists of six two and half hour sessions.  For more details please click here.  Cost £125.  (That works out at under £21 per session).

Digital Rain, Digital Lightning and Wet-look Glamour – April 11th at Stillshot Photography Studios in Preston.  Learn how to set up lighting and pose models to create images on to which we can digitally add rain and lightning effects.  Spend the morning working with a model to create photographs which will be the basis of our final images.  After lunch (included in the price) will be a training on how to add the digital effects.  Cost £60.  For more details please click here.

Props and poses – Never quite sure how to pose models and portrait clients?  The biggest ‘cheat’ in possing someone is to give them some props to work with.  Throughout this event you will have the opportunity to practice photographing models with a large and varried selection of props.  Also in this full day practical session we will work with a couple of models to show some simple but effective poses where no props are necessary.  Cost £75 (including lunch).

An Introduction to Studio Photography – Ever fancied trying studio photography but have no idea where to start.  This day long training event will teach the basics. You will learn how to use studio lighting, lighting modifiers and studio equipment.  It will also give you plenty of opportunity to practice photographing a professional model.  Cost £65 (includes lunch).

Night photography and painting with light – We will be using a local church and churchyard for this afternoon / evening event.  The event will start with a tutorial on night time photography, including painting with light techniques and strobist techniques.  As the light fades we will have the oppertunity to practice the techniques invoved in balancing the fading daylight with artificial light.  Once it is completely dark we will use painting with light techniques and multiple off camera flash techniques.  Cost TBA.

Creative Headshots – Looking to create more unusual looking portraits?  This full day session will include a morning setting up different lighting and backgrounds and taking photographs which will be the basis of our completed images.  After lunch (included in the price) we will look at the photoshop techniques required to process the images.  These techniques will include ‘green screen’ processing, hollywood style glamour effects and even how to make an image look like it has been draw for a graphic novel.   Cost £65 (includes lunch).

Introduction to Wedding Photograrphy – Ever been asked to photograph a friend or relatives’s wedding and not known where to start?  In this full day event I will talk you through what is involved in ‘doing a wedding’.  From what shots you need to take, advice on talking control on the day, album suppliers, and the day will finish with practice session with couple of models as our bride and groom.  Cost £85 (includes lunch).

Trash the Dress Photography – A style of photography from the US which is catching on here in the UK.  This style of photography invoves photographing a model (or a bride after her wedding) in eveningwear or bridalwear, in locations where such clothing would not normally be worn.  On this workshop we will work with a model to create these types of images, looking at locations, style, possing and some of the practical issues.  Cost £65.

If you go down to the woods…. – for Autumn 2010 I will be organising a group shoot in a Cheshire wood.  A chance to photograph models against the backdrop of autumnal trees, and with the autumnal leaves.  Cost TBA.

Other possible training events include….
Introduction to Glamour Photography
Art Nude workshop
Introduction to Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
Selling through photographic libraries
