- POTD 1 Apr 2007: St Peters Dome 1 April 2007
The dome of Basilica San Pietro (St. Peter’s Basilica), Rome. In the foreground is the baldacchinoI was updating flickr (www.flickr.com/photos/ianbutty) yesterday with some of my favourite Rome photos. Including this one of the dome of St. Peters. For some reason this photo has never made it to the POTD… until now.

Number One Deansgate, Manchester. Number One Deansgate is the UK’s tallest all-steel residential buI uploaded this photo to flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianbutty) the other day. I’ve never been really satisfied with it – I don’t think the verticals are right… they are neither one thing nor the other… not true vertical, and not angled enough to be quirky. I was thus quite surprised when two well respected achitectural photographers said they liked it, and both tagged it a favorite in flickr. May be I’m just too critical of my own work?
The one think I do like about the shot are the stuts under it… it makes it look like something out of an old Thunderbirds or Stingray episode.

Street Scene from the Jewish Quarter of RomeCouldn’t think of what to post as my image of the day today… The obvious image would have been this photo (http://www.imb.biz/page.php?pg=diary&d=06-8-24) of Bleak house as it sold today:

A statue of Jesus rising from the dead. Bath AbbeyBy the time you read this it will be Easter Day. So I thought today’s POTD it would be appropriate to post an image of a statue from Bath Abbey – the statue symbolises Jesus breaking out from the tomb on Easter morning.
He is risen! Happy Easter, folks.

Leaping Salmon Sculpture on the Trans Pennine TrailI’m showcasing one of Ann’s photos today. She went out for a walk (leaving me to tidy the study) and this is one of the photos she came back with.
The Trans Pennine Trail goes near our house and Ann set of to walk a streatch starting from home. She got as far as Fletcher Moss in Didsbury. Neither of us have been along the local section of the trail for a while, and Ann came back describing the great improvements… including various scultures, like this one of a leaping salmon.

We watched the last episode of “Life on Mars” this evening. A great series, well done to all concerned. As much of the series has been filmed in Stockport we’ve had great fun playing “spot the location” as well as trying to work out what has been going on.
In honour of the series today’s POTD is me in the 1970’s aged just 7.

Flickr RomeI’ve been playing with flickr over the last couple of weeks and I’ve created a few ‘sets’ of photos, for example this one of Rome: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianbutty/sets/72157600044983749/
For your information the photos in the mosaic that forms today’s POTD are as follows:

Click on any of the links and it will take you to that photo on Flickr.
PhotoMap of RomeOne of the great things about flickr is that you can “geotag” your photos… locate them on a map. What this means is that when you have a good number of photos for a particular location you end up with a map with all your photos plotted on it. I’ve created such a map for my Rome photos. At the time of writing I have 39 photos plotted on it. You can see the map at:
http://www.flickr.com/map/?&user_id=7468121@N06&set_id=72157600044983749
To see the photos at a location click on any of the dots. As you zoom in many of the dots will separate to show you more precisely where the photo was taken. You can all so switch to satellite view to see an area view of the locations where the pictures were taken.

Rebuilding ExeterToday I finally finished working on my list of 1000+ photos which needed cleaning/remedial work doing to them prior to library submission. Now all I have to do is keyword the photos…. and there’s 4000+ photos needing keywords.
Today’s POTD is one of the last images that I had marked for remedial work, in this case part of the work was to convert the sky to a more eye-catching red/orange colour. You can see the original version of the image here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianbutty/466536374/
Seeing both versions I think they both have merits and I will probably submit both to the libraries.
The visitor’s centre at Mizen Head, Co. Cork – Ireland’s most south westerly point.Today’s POTD image may not look very special to you. But it is certainly a very important image to me. This is my first Geotagged photograph. What is Geotagging? Geotagging is encoding *within an image* details of latitude and longitude for where the photograph was taken.
I have for a while been placing images on maps (see http://www.imb.biz/page.php?pg=diary&d=2007-04-16 for an example of a map of Rome) but that location data hasn’t been recorded anywhere – other than on the specific map. Now using a couple of modified scripts I’m able to locate a photograph on GoogleEarth (http://www.imb.biz/page.php?pg=diary&d=2005-12-17) store that information in IMatch (the image management database I use) then when I generate an image (for example for flickr) the location data is encoded into it such that it can automatically be plotted on a map. To see this in action you can look at todays POTD in flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ianbutty/467619991/ – and click on “map” to see where it was taken.
OK so this isn’t that interesting by itself, but suppose you have a lot of GeoTagged photos all in say Rome, or Luxor, or Manchester. This would be one very neat way for people to find the photos they want. And that is why this humble little image is so important it is the start of being able to offer photo buyers a graphical way to find the travel images thay are looking for. And that is why this is a very important image to me.

Woodford Players: David CopperfieldToday is the last day of David Copperfield. In a little over an hour I’ll be setting off to the theatre to do two shows, an afternoon matinee and an evening show. After this there’s the set strike and then the after show party! (I’m shattered just thinking about it!).
The photo BTW is taken from the sequence where little David transforms into big David. Which involves lots of green lights, actors with strange shouds over them, wiered movements and lots of hand waving. It sounds terrible, it looked terrible in rehearsal but on stage in context, with the lights and sound effects it does work!

Stockport Garrick: The AnniversaryYesterday was an interesting and busy day. I had two performances of David Copperfield, followed by a set strike and party (I didn’t get to bed till 3.00am this morning). For Ann on the other hand the fun of a play run is just beginning. Yesterday was her first night as prompt for “The Anniversary” at Stockport Garrick. (http://www.stockportgarrick.co.uk/plays/07theanniversary.html) I had photographed the rehearsal last Sunday, so that I could put together a photo display in the theatre foyer and today’s POTD is taken from that shoot. I thought it appropriate as like the character of Tom in the photo all I’ve done today is put my feet up!
