The Mosque of Abu ‘l-Haggag, Luxor

Returning back to the sequence of ARPS images that I started uploading a week or so ago.  This is the medieval mosque of Abu ‘l-Haggag.  It is built on top of part of Luxor Temple.  When the mosque was built most of the temple was hidden underground, with only the tops of the statues and columns visible.  When the temple was excavated in 1885 the area around the mosque was cleared but the the mosque remains.  From inside the temple (as shown) this gives a strange appearance – the mosque appears to be several storeys higher that it actually is, and as you can see, one of the doors leads out to a sheer drop!
