Fishing Boats in Malta
Ok, so firstly an appology for the error in yesterday’s POTD – the main subject of the image weren’t actually balconies – they were louvered windows. There were a couple of balconies in the photo (red ones – in the middle) so I was at least parly right. Look… it was late… I was tired….
Ok, on to todays photo. These are traditional Maltese fishing boats. Painted in traditional colours. The eye motif which is very common on boats in Malta is symbol of protection and the origin of it can be traced back to ancient Egypt. The eye of Horus, possibly.
Yes, you’re right; that’s an apotropaic symbol against the “evil eye” (a hex). Red blue and yellow are the traditional colours for boats but of course, other hues get a look in… “Boat” in this case is the fishing boat (luzzu) but we have lots of other types… dghajsa, kajjikk, and so on. The Eye could be the Eye of Osiris, as well; depend whom you want to believe.
I just did a Google search for “ian butterfield” and this page was the third result!!!
