Hi Garry,
Firstly I’m going to do an Inspiration Sheet on the whole topic of HDR – but it may be a few weeks before it is out. So let me give you a little bit of the basics – you are right when you say that true HDR requires multiple exposures and then they need to be combined together in post-production. However it is possible to create similar effects in other ways, but they are not really HDR in the truest sense.If you want to create pseudo-HDR you really need to be working with RAW images as they give you a bigger dynamic range to start with, and you need to make sure that you don’t overexpose the highlights, because once you have lost highlight detail it has gone forever. When you bring back detail in the shadows it does cause noise in the image, and that’s the main downside of doing a pseudo-HDR. Some of my images have an HDR look to them that has been achieved by using Nik Efex plugins (a lightroom/photoshop plug-in – https://nikcollection.dxo.com/) or using SnapSeed on the iPad/iPhone (also available for Android).

This is an image you should be proud of. When creating landscape images I tell people to look for foreground, midground and background – you have managed to achieve that with the snow, lake and mountains. Not only that the use of a reflection to draw attention to the mountains has really worked.
Because the image is small I can’t comment on whether it is suffering from any blurring due to the motion of the train – hopefully not. Even if it is – at screen resolution it is not noticeable.
If I had to nit-pick (and this really is minor) the only thing I would change is to clone out the slightly blurred fence post at the very bottom of the frame.
Other than that it is an excellent shot – well done.

FYI I am actively looking at moving these forums over to another system that is a bit more friendly for images, so hopefully, this issue won’t be a long-term one.

Ah, the hills around Castleton, a favourite walking place of mine. I really must go back, not been there for years! Interesting image and it shows the burnt ground of this hot summer. You have also done an excellent job of preserving the details in the sky.As an attempt at a “lead-in lines” image, I think it has been less successful. Looking at the line of the path, which is your lead-in line, if your eye follows it moves from the middle of the image to the edge. The path is more of a frame than a lead-in in this case.
Think of a lead in line as an arrow – it should point to your subject and pull the eye into the image. In this case because it is along the edge of the frame it is pulling the eye out for the image rather than into it.
There is, of course, the possibility that Instagram has chopped off the left of the frame (it has been known) if that is the case then I am sure the original composition was a lot more effective before the digital cropping imps at Instagram got their hands on it! If the path was this close to the left of the frame on the original then I would recommend including a bit more of the scene on the left.

Firstly, a very warm welcome to both the Academy and to the Forum. You are right, at the moment you can’t upload images directly to the Forum – this is something I am looking into getting changed – but believe it or not it will cost a bit of money to enable that functionality, so it is difficult to justify it at the moment with so few members posting image for critique. When that picks up I will be sorting that. In the meantime you have done the right thing and just posted a link to the image online. If you have a direct link to an image (Eg http://somwhere.com/myimage.jpg) you can use the IMG button to include it in the post. But a link as you have post works just fine – I can see the image and that is what matters.On to the image itself. That church is not the easiest of building to photograph – I had to goes at it morning and afternoon while we were there and didn’t get that many images that I was happy with of it. So with that background, I think you have done a reasonable job on this image and I think the “quirky angle” works with it. I also think the extra work you have done to bring out the colour in the sky was the right decision.
A couple of things to keep in mind and to think about. You have clipped the cross of the top of the left tower – this may have been due to the Instagram cropping – if it is please ignore that comment. The other thing I’m not sure about is the little white triangle of sky in the bottom left of the image. I would have either move the camera slightly to the right to avoid it or tilted it slightly more which would have removed it as well.
Finally, a comment about the colour/white balance – I quite like the browny/orangy colour of the church in your image, however my recollection (and I’ve checked this with my own images) was that the church was a more grey colour. This colour shift may be due to either having a white balance that is too ‘warm’ and/or pumping up the saturation a little too high. In many ways the colour shift doesn’t matter as it is artistic intent, and I do similar colour shifts in my own images. However, if this was an image you were producing for someone who wanted accurate colour or you wanted to maintain colour accuracy for an image you may need to be a little more ‘gentle’ with the adjustments which can cause it.

How are you getting on with the controller? I’m still in the tweaking my configuration phase at the moment. Got a lot of scribbles and stickers on my overlay – once I’m happy with it all I’ll edit the template and have a nice looking overlay for the controller.

Glad you posted about that – I’ve been noticing it of late too. BUT not all the time, and occasionally my broadband has been running slow, so wasn’t sure if what I was seeing was due to my broadband. Now that you have reported it – I can eliminate my broadband so now I’m not sure if it is the website or the server.I Need to try a few experiments and get some advice
Most of my time on the website is in the admin interface, which has never been noted for speed so my perceptions of where the problems are will different to users of the website. Please, can other Academy members let me know their experiences – is it generally slow or just on certain activities such as viewing events, or downloading inspiration sheets.
