Fellow photographers,

A big thanks to everyone who attended recent events and workshops – the numbers attending of late have been fantastic.  Thank you all.

In this newsletter I want to talk a little bit about Google+ and highlight some forthcoming events at the studio.

Use the links above to view details of these events on the website or alternatively, read on…..

A few thoughts on Google+

Earlier this week I got invited to join Google+.  I’m not a big fan of social networking when all it consists of is telling each other what you had for lunch and gossiping about the latest soap plot development.  However, I recognise the value of social networking when it comes to sharing information about our chosen hobbies.  I’ve found many a useful photography link and gained several useful contacts through Facebook and Twitter.  So I decided to check out Google+.  At the moment it has very much a Facebook LITE feel about it – it looks similar to facebook but doesn’t have the same range of facilities as Facebook.

However, what it does have is a particularly neat way of showing images. Take a look at this gallery of mine for example, and there seems to be a bit of a determination by photographers to make Google+ work for them.  I’ve found several posts about how photographers can use Google plus such as this one by Damien Franco: http://www.pixiq.com/article/getting-started-in-google-plus-a-photographers-guide

Damien’s post talks about adding photographers to your circles and even offers some good suggestions for people worth adding.  There’s also a link to a list where photographers can post to make them selves know to other photograpers:  See here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/105551989431666449555/posts/YwzFKEw9CK7

Inspired by this I’ve created my own list for UK based photographers: https://plus.google.com/u/0/106287665062204946341/posts/AhGMwXm7iP6 – if you are on google+ please post to it and make yourself know to others.
If you would like an invite to join Google+ just let me know and I’ll send you one.  For reference my profile on Google+ can be found here – please check it out!

PS – Don’t forget to ‘like’ Ian’s Studio’s facebook page – if you haven’t done so already!

Friday, 15 July 2011 , 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Location: Ian’s Studio
Mounting and Matting

Time to look at different ways to cut mounts and mattes for effective ways to display your images.

Bring along prints you would like to mount if you have a frame of a specific size for them to go into we will cut to match the frame.  If not we will cut the mounts to fit in a range of standard frame sizes.  Eg 50x40cm frames.

I will have a professional mount cutter available at the studio for you to use at this event.  I will also have mount board, and adhesive tape for attaching prints to the mounts.

In addition to cut standard mounts we will also look at cutting some more elaborate mounts such as multiple apertures in a single mount.

Crosby Beach

Today we head to Crosby Beach.  This will be a chance to photograph (at least) two models, and 100 Iron men.  There will be opportunities to get images in the sea, on the beach and in the sand-dunes.  As the light fades we will look at day-for-night strobist techniques.

Our lead model for this event will be Steph Owens (See:  http://www.purestorm.com/profile.aspx?id=stephowens).  I recently had the pleasure of working with Steph on Studio Based shoot and I was very impressed with her professionalism, enthusiasm and the fact that she was constantly coming up with ideas to improve our shoot.  I was so impressed that I immediately booked her for this event at Crosby.  Don’t miss this opportunity to work with her.
