PHOTONEWS: Strobes and Workshops

Fellow photographers,
It’s a busy week. Three events in five days. Firstly we have a mid-week special full day event tomorrow with Tinted Cream. On Friday a change to the advertised event we are having a strobist night in the park with model Dante-Layla, and finally on Sunday we have a full workshop called Learn to use your flash.

We also have two great events next week. Friday night we have model “Black Beauty” visiting the studio, and the following day has the rescheduled “Digital Rain and Wet-look Glamour” workshop.

I’ve also added quite a few new events to the calendar with more to come over the next few days. Take a look at the full programme at the end of the newsletter for what is already planned.

Tinted Cream is a very experienced model working at lots of levels and styles up to art nude throughout the day.

We will work on a number of images throughout the day including fashion, silhouettes, fashion nude (art nude but with a single item of clothing eg a jacket), and a lot more besides.

Strobist Night in the Park

Location: Ian’s Studio
A change to our program sees local model Dante-Layla join us for a strobist night in and around Vernon and Woodbank Parks.

In addition to working on location portraits we will also work on some movement based ideas – such as freezing the action and second curtain sync. (for those whose camera/flash support it). Depending on the weather conditions we may also go down to the river for some shots in and around the water.

This will be a great opportunity to work with a fun model and to develop your off-camera flash techniques.

Learn to Use Your flash Workshop

Location: Ian’s Studio
This is a full day workshop…. EXCEPT… it takes place over an afternoon and an evening. Throughout this workshop you will learn how and when to use your flash on camera and how to get your flash off camera.

Course Overview:

On Camera Flash
– TTL metering
– Flash exposure compensation
– Techniques for using diffusers
– Flash bouncing – including using reflector and simple ‘fun’ card reflectors
– High Speed Sync
– Second Curtain Sync
– Using a TTL cable

Off-Camera Flash
– Triggering the flash
– Flash modifiers
– Other strobist gear
– Using your flash in manual mode
– Lighting set-ups for one, and two flash shooting
– Over powering the sun techniques

Printed notes will be supplied The training would NOT be classroom style. It would be practical training centred round shooting a model. Some of the course will involve shooting outside.

An art & glamour nude evening with Black Beauty

Digital rain & wet-look glamour workshop

Saturday, 25 August 2012 , 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Location: Ian’s Studio
This one day training event will teach how to create wet-look glamour images and to add rain effects and lightning effects in Photoshop.

During the morning we will spend 2-3hours in the studio working with one or more models (depending on the number of photographers attending) to create the wet-look glamour images which will be the basis of our completed shots.

During this time you will learn how to set up the lights needed to create the effects. You will learn some of the tricks employed to create wet-look images, including how to make the water droplets more visible, and how to control where the water goes. The session is a practical session and you will have plenty of opportunity to take photographs.

Please note: due to the nature of some of the images and techniques being demonstrated at this event the model(s) will be posing topless for some of the shots. If this is likely to cause offence please do not book to come on this course.

After lunch (which is included in the price of the course) we go into a tutorial session where you will be shown how to use Photoshop to add digital rain and digital lightning effects to the images we created during the morning session. If you have a laptop with Photoshop on it you are welcome to bring it with you and follow the tutorials as we go through them. Alternatively you can sit back, watch and then try out the techniques at your leisure at home. Either way you will be provided with printed notes on how to achieve the effects and a CD with a video screencast showing you the steps for both digital rain and digital lightning.

The model for this event will be announced later.
