Fellow Photographers,
This newsletter has a bit of a messy theme to it.  That is because in the next three weeks I have two different messy workshops at the studio.  As a direct consequence of this the Friday night events preceding them take advantage of the fact that the studio will have protective sheeting down.  This Friday it is A Splash of Glamour and on 7 Dec it will be Oil and Water Glamour.

If you have never been to one of the studio messy workshops, they are a lot of fun. And the two forthcoming ones have different emphases.  This Saturday “Messy Day with Axa Jay” will have an emphasis on what is often referred to as a Splosh fetish – if you don’t know what that is think of a cross between glamour photography and slapstick comedy.  By all accounts Axa is quite a character and I am really looking forward to working with her. For those who who want a more arty approach then the “Messy Workshop” on 8 December is the one for you.  Working with established art nude model Debbie Ann we will create a range of artistic images incorportating messy substances.

From the blog this time two news stories: the first will be of interest to anyone who has had copyright on their images infringed.  The second is an announcement about two new training courses for 2013.

We have our usual Photos Of The Day and I’d like to draw your attention to the one about “Jake” as that POTD contains advice about studio lighting for pet photography.

And finally in the full programme section two new events have been added.

For more information on all of this… read on…

Another is our series of messy workshops/shoots.  This time our model is the amazing Axa Jay.

Messy workshops / messy group shoots at Ian’s studio tend to be a mix between messy art nude set-ups and set-ups with a more messy fetish (sploshing) aspect to them.  Because of Axa’s experience the emphasis this time is going to be more towards the splosh style of shoot.  Although, there will be some time for some arty shots should anyone want to shoot that style.

Some example images from past messy shoots showing a lot of different styles can be found here: http://photos.imb.biz/messy-highlights

Axa’s modelling portfolio can be found here: http://purpleport.com/portfolio/axajay/?referrer=iansstudio

Please note: While care will be taken to try to ensure that those attending the event do not get messy, you should be aware that we are working with messy substances such as paint and food substance which may stain.  Wearing old clothes is advised.

From the Blog…

New Training Courses

I am in the process of developing two new training courses for 2013.  These will be the long awaited “Digital Techniques Course” and a course which will be provisionally called “The Complete Studio Course“.  These course are designed to compliment the existing “Introduction to DSLR Photography Course” and “Intermediate Photography Course“.

Both of the new course are designed to be practical in nature but in very different ways.

The “Digital Techniques Course” will be classroom style teaching.  Each session we look at a different digital technique. We will consider any appropriate in-camera techniques followed by the post processing methods.  Along side this we will also look at related Photoshop and Lightroom techniques.  Participants will be encouraged to bring along their own laptops to follow along with the post processing, and editing techniques.

The “Complete Studio Course” will NOT be classroom style teaching, instead each week we will look at a different type of studio based photography and participants will get the chance to set-up lights and shoot that theme.

Both courses will have the usual comprehensive printed notes.

Course durations and fees are yet to be finalised, but I am expecting both course to run for 7 or 8 sessions.  I hoping the price for the Digital Techniques course will be in-line with the existing courses (ie around £150 for the full course).   The Complete Studio Course, because of the need to book models, is likely to be more expensive, probably around £275. But when you consider over the eight weeks of the course you will get 20 hours in the studio, then perhaps it won’t seem so expensive?

At this stage I want to gauge interest in the courses.  If you think you would be interested in either course please let me know.  No obligation, it just gives me some reassurance that it is worth continuing to develop the new training courses.

BLOG: Making Legal Claims Easier

It has been widely reported on-line in the last few days that it is now easier than ever for photographers to make legal claims against those who infringe their copyright.  A small claims track has been set-up in the Patent County Court.

Amateur Photographer have covered the change in some detail and more information about this can be found on theire website: http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/photo-news/539304/photo-copyright-boost-set-to-open-online-floodgates

They also have a handy step by step guide to making a claim: http://www.amateurphotographer.co.uk/photo-news/539324/photography-copyright-claims-a-step-by-step-guide

Photo of the Day

POTD: 11 Nov 2012: Remembrance

My photo of the day for Remembrance Day is of the “Women of World War II” memorial in Whitehall, London.  It was a dull white sky day when I was there last year so I took the decision to just photograph a detail of the memorial to eliminate the white sky.  Very little done in post production – usual levels adjustments  a little boost to contrast and that’s about it.

My London gallery can be found here: http://photos.imb.biz/travel/uk/london but I have to say there is very little in it at the moment!  (I will be adding more soon).

POTD 6 Nov 2012 : Jake

We had a rather excitable subject visiting the studio today: Jake, a black Labrador puppy belonging to local photographer Diane Seddon (http://www.oaktreephotography.co.uk/).  Diane wanted to get some images of Jake while he was still a puppy and kindly allowed me to get a few shots of him too.

This is good opportunity for me to talk about studio lighting for pets (and small children too).  I’m not a big fan of “brolly lighting” where you have two lights reflecting off umbrellas flooding the area with light.  But when you are working with subjects such as animals or small children which may or may not stay where you want them brolly lighting is a reasonable compromise.

The benefits are that light covers an area fairly evenly so it doesn’t really matter exactly where the subject is or which direction they are facing.  Very useful with an excitable puppy I can tell you!  The downside however is that the lighting is flat and you don’t get very much shadow or definition.  Not essential for hi-key images but given the option I would prefer to have shadows and definition in my images.

So here’s the lighting set-up we used…

The subject was metered for an exposure of f/8 and the background for f/13 – 1.5 stops over the subject to ensure that the camera records it as pure white.

You can see a few more of my image of Jake here: http://photos.imb.biz/studio/jake
