Fellow Photographers,
I wanted to send out this newsletter today to wish you all a very happy Christmas. I know I will see a few of you in person tonight at the “Mince Pies and Critiques” session, and I would love to invite even more to that even but we are fully booked.
I do have a couple of events going on over the Christmas and New Year period – most notably our Winter Fashion shoot in Vernon Park next Friday – this is an afternoon event rather than our standard evening event. As the light fades we will have some great opportunities for working with strobes at that event.
We kick of the new year with the rescheduled “Water Droplet Collision” night on Friday 4th January. The specialist gear needed for the event will be set up at my studio the day before so we can be confident that everything will go to plan.
I will email out details of the rest of January and the first part of 2013 just after Christmas.
I’ve had a few people ask if the studio is available for hire over Christmas – the answer is of course: “yes” – no supplemental charges for booking the studio over the holiday period… although I might add a surcharge if you wanted to shoot on Christmas day… but noone wants to do that… do they?
So once again, have a fantastic Christmas!

Tonight’s event will be something a bit different. This latest event in our popular table-top photography events will enable you photograph water drop collisions. Photographer Stephen Ennis will be bring to the studio a specialist set-up which not only controls the flash, but controls the number and rate of water droplets
*** Please not the date of this event is currently provisional and subject to change ***
The set-up uses electronics and solenoids to control the water droplets and there by ensure ensure we can capture spectacular droplet collisions every shots.
Example images using these techniques can be found here: http://photos.imb.biz/
In addition to this I will show you how you can still create interesting water droplet images using very basic items you can find around the home.
In addition to your camera if you have any of the following please bring your macro lens or extension tubes, tripod, flash, cable release or remote trigger. If you don’t have these things there will be plenty at the studio to share but it is always easier to use your own gear.

I have studio accounts on both Purpleport (http://purpleport.com/portfolio/iansstudio/?referrer=iansstudio) and Purestorm (http://www.purestorm.com/iansstudio). As a studio I can leave feedback on photographers who have used the studio or attended events and workshops at the studio.
If any photographer who has been to an event or workshop I have run would like me to leave feedback on their Purpleport or Purestorm profiles I am very happy to do so. I don’t do this be default as some photographers don’t wish potential clients to know what courses/workshops they have attended. If you want feedback leaving just let me know I am happy to do so.
And if you feel you can leave feedback about the studio on either of my studio profiles (see links above) then I would be very happy to receive it.
Photo of the Day
POTD 5 Dec 2012 – Meet Estelle
This is Estelle – a Christmas Tree ornament. She is called Estelle because we purchased her in Estonia…. and the name means “star” – so this means we can have both an angel and a star on the top of our Christmas tree.
The ‘blue blobs’ in the background (as Ann called them) are actually out of focus tree lights. I used a shallow depth of field (aperture of f/2.8) to create the effect of overlapping pools of light.
