Fellow Photographers,

The week’s newsletter is all about things returning to the studio.

On Friday we have Cez returning to the studio for our Projected Nudes event – at the time of writing I only have two places left on this one so book quickly if you want one of them.

On Saturday we have the return of the Introduction to Wedding Photography workshop. I tend to run this about once a year so if you think you might be asked to shoot a wedding in the next twelve months don’t miss it.

In July Rick Bradbury returns to the studio to run no less than three different Friday Night at the Studio events.  If you have never been to one of Rick’s events it is well worth making the effort.  Rick style is different to mine and a good way to develop your own photographic style is to look at lots of different styles to find out what works for you.

In August Willow Rose makes a very welcome return to the studio.  Willow was last at the studio for an Art Nude workshop 18 months ago.  Following this she moved out of the area. She is back for a few weeks in August and I have booked her for a Boudoir Workshop and one of my so called “4×4 Days

In September we see the return of Rachael F to the studio.  Rachael is a very popular model and photographer at the studio.  And to celebrate her return after a year abroad on placement we are holding a one off group event with Rachael where she will be modelling for half the day and joining photographers to shoot a model of her choice for the rest of the day.

Looking further ahead in the year – I am rerunning the popular Comprehensive Studio Photography Course starting in October – this course was over subscribed earlier this year when I ran it for the first time.  Don’t miss out this time.

For more information about what is returning to the studio… plus a blog entry about Foursquare and info about how I created a publicity image for a theatre production I am involved in….. please read on….

Projected Nudes

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM

For tonight’s event we are going to look at the technique of projecting images and textures over the body of our model.  We will achieve this using a laptop and a video projector.

Please Note: The current images on the eFlyer is a photoshop composite to illustrate the type of effect we will be achieving.  Since creating the eFlyer I have completed a test shoot using the techniques we will be using at this event.  You can see the results from that shoot here:

http://photos.imb.biz/model/shoot/cez_j – please note as you might expect the gallery contains some nudity.

Our model for this event is Cez_J. Cez was the model I worked with on the above test shoot – you can find her profile on Purpleport : http://purpleport.com/portfolio/cezj/?referrer=iansstudio

Please note: I have already had a lot of people say that they are interested in coming to this event – so please book early to avoid disappointment.

Saturday, 29 June 2013 – Introduction to Wedding Photography Workshop

Introduction to Wedding Photography Workshop

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Price: £69

At some point all photographers get asked to photograph a wedding – even if it is on an informal basis just as a favour for a friend.  This workshop will introduce you to what is involved.

While taking the photographs is relatively straightforward what scares most photographers is the fact that you have limited time and only have one chance at a wedding.  In this workshop we give special emphasis on the ‘stage management’ role that a wedding photographer has to assume.

We look at the planning side, and how to make sure things run smoothly from a photographic perspective.  We go through the day looking at different scenes that wedding photographers have to photograph.

We conclude the workshop with the chance to photograph bride and groom models.
(Please note: 4 or more attendees are required to be able to book both bride and groom models.  If there are 2 or 3 attendees on the workshop we will only have a bride model to shoot.  With only 1 attendee I can still run the workshop as a one-to-one training session but would not be able to offer the chance to shoot).

Cost £69 (Includes lunch and notes)

Full payment or a deposit of £25 is required to secure a place – please book using the form below.

Friday, 5 July 2013 – Shadows & Patterns

Shadows & Patterns

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £22

Tonight’s event will be run by Rick Bradbury (Ian is directing “Agnes of God” at Woodford).  The event is all about creating shadows patterns with light and objects/props that we can fire a light at or through.

So think pattern shapes made from cardboard or household items. If you can fire a light at it and it has some holes in it we can create a pattern of light on our model.

Rick will bring along a few items but by all means feel free to bring your own.

You can see an example of this in the eFlyer, for this shot Rick had a speedlite in the Westcott Apollo soft box with Grid, placed the speedlite at the back of the soft box turned it towards the grid and fired the bare light at the grid which created the pattern you see.

So get ready for an evening of fun and experimentation with light and shadows.

The model for this event is Katherine Georgina (who is also the model on the eFlyer). http://purpleport.com/portfolio/katherinegeorgina/

Price £22

We will need a minimum of 4 photographers booking for this to go ahead.  The maximum number will be 7.  So get your place booked now.

Please book via my website: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/shadows-patterns/

Friday, 12 July 2013 – Bokeh Night

Bokeh Night

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £22

For tonight’s event we will look at adding bokeh effects to our photographs.  This will include how to make bokeh masks to change the shape of the bokeh.

We will have set up which involve shooting with a model and other set-ups that might be considered as table-top set-ups.

Our model at this event will be Rachel Horner – http://purpleport.com/portfolio/cakepls/?referrer=ianbutty

You will need a lens with a wide aperture (eg f/1.8, f/2.8 or similar), canon shooters can borrow my 50mm f/1.8 if they need to.  It is also worth bringing your tripod – again if you don’t have one you can use one of the studio tripods.

Price: £22

Please book via my website: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/bokeh-night/

From the Blog…

ian's studo-4square

Do you use foursquare?  I have been aware of it for a while but only just started using it?  It is yet another social media platform but the emphasis is very much on places you are visiting.

I’ve been using Foursquare since I got my iPad a month ago, and one of the cool things it foursquare lets you do is post a photo from your phone or iPad or other tablet device to illustrate checking in at a particular location.  I am finding this an interesting challenge.  Can I create a visually appealing snapshot (with an iPad) for each location I check into?  There’s no editing and thus the images are straight out of camera.  I know there are tool which will permit you to do that but the point of doing it as part of foursquare is that it is instant.  And learning to be able to see compositions in an instant is a useful skill for any photographer.

Ian’s Studio has been on Foursquare as a location for quite sometime.  See:http://4sq.com/IQSPF4 My thanks to Stuart Smith who created the venue on there.  So if you are already a Foursquare user please check-in when you visit the studio.

If you aren’t I challenge you to join up and to create interesting images via your phone or tablet as you check into places. The more you exercise those creative ‘muscles’ the more we improve as photographers.

And finally please ‘friend me’ on foursquare – I would love to see any images you take as part of your check-ins.  You find me (and my foursquare images) here: https://foursquare.com/user/27664203

Photo of the Day

POTD 18 Jun 2013 : Agnes of God

This is a poster image I created with actress Emma Toms.  The play is Agnes of God and in addition to doing this image I am also directing it.  It is the compelling story of a young nun who has been found in her room with the dead body of a new born baby.

The story is told from the perspective of the court psychiatrist who is trying to determine if Agnes is fit to stand trial for the baby’s murder.  The third character in the play is the mother superior at the convent, who is trying to protect Agnes.  Or does she have something to hide herself?  I know quite a few photographers who subscribe to this newsletter are also theatre goers.  So if you are able to come to see the play you won’t regret it.  It will be performed “in the round” with the audience close to the action.  You can book tickets from Pat on 0161 292 2420.

A little about the photograph.  It is actually made up of 4 different images.  All shot with the same lighting.  Small soft box high above Emma on a boom stand.  Rim lights behind left and right to give the bright glow through the habit and on the edges of Emma’s hands.

Firstly I shot Emma in her nun’s habit.  Secondly I took a number of shots of Emma (now wearing old clothes so that we didn’t get blood on the habit) holding different amounts of blood in her hands.  Finally I asked her to pour the blood from her hands and I captured it running from her hands.  I used four images and combined the different parts together in photoshop to create the image.
