Fellow Photographers,
We have a wide range of different events on the calendar this month. Starting on Friday we have Improvised Outfits with model Roo Morge.
It’ll soon be Christmas! I don’t know about you but I am always on the last minute preparing for Christmas so this year I am starting early and giving you a chance to do the same. On Friday 15 August we have one of our popular Table Top Nights. The theme this time will all be about creating images which you can use on your Christmas Cards.
A mystery event on Friday 22nd August will be announce shortly… but if you fancy ‘lucky dip’ I’m happy to accept your booking!
On Bank Holiday Monday we will be heading off to Fleetwood for a Trash the Dress shoot with model Maud and her actual wedding dress! Don’t miss this one as we will not be able to rerun this event!
We round out August on Summer in the Park on Friday 29th, and then the following day Rhianna Grey is back for another “book by the hour” studio days.
I have already added September’s events to the Studio Calendar and you will find links to all of those at the end of the newsletter.
So for information on all of this and a blog post on why I have temperarily changed my on-line avatar… please read on….

Join us on August Bank Holiday Monday in Fleetwood for a Trash the Dress shoot with model Maud. We will be shooting in various locations in the Fleetwood area including round the wrecks on the Fleetwood marshes.
Our model for this event will be Maud (http://purpleport.com/portfolio/maude/?referrer=ianbutty). Maud was recently at the studio for our bedroom glamour night and was an instant hit with the photographers and I think without exception we were all keen to shoot with her again.
The dress that Maud will be wearing for this shoot will be her actual, real life wedding dress! And we intend to completely trash it by the end of the shoot. As Maud says: “a celebration in mud of a great divorce hahaha“
Never done a “trash the dress” shoot before? And not sure what to expect? You might want to take a look at these two galleries on my website:
http://photos.imb.biz/model/shoot/saphire-ttd and http://photos.imb.biz/model/shoot/royalttd
We are expecting the end of the shoot to be on the mud flats near the wrecks, so you should wear old clothes and possibly bring a change of clothing with you too.

From the Blog…
28 July 2014 : #WeAreN or Why I am changing my avatar
When I started out as a photographer I started as a travel photographer selling images though stock libraries. The area I specialised in was images of the Middle East and the Arab World. About five or six years ago the world of stock photography changed, not long after that it also became more difficult to travel in the Middle East and I had to change the direction of my career. But I have never lost my interest in the Middle East and the Arab World.
There are worrying things happening in the Middle East at the moment. You have probably heard of ISIS which is an acronym for Islamic State of Iraq & al Sham (al Sham is part of northern Syria and the conflict that is happening in Iraq and in Syria. What you may not have heard is what is happening in Mosul at the moment. ISIS have started a campaign of persecution against the Christians who are living there.
Christians are being given a stark choice, convert to Islam, pay a huge tax, or be killed. The homes and properties of the Christians are being marked with the Arabic letter ن or ‘n’ (it looks like a U with a dot above it) which stands for Nazarene (after the region of Nazareth that Jesus came from). At the time of writing this it looks like most if not all of the Christians have now left Mosul. Many have had their possessions stolen from them, others are talking about brutal persecution.
To help raise awareness of this persecution, and to stand with the Christians of Mosul the #WeAreN campaign is asking people to change their social media avatars to incorporate the the letter ن. I would ask those of you reading this to consider doing the same.
Although I am a Christian and want to show my support for persecuted Christians, it doesn’t matter whether you are a Christian, have a different faith or no faith at all. This is humanitarian issue. I am also sure that many of my Muslim friends will be equally appalled at the way these Christians are being treated. 70+ years ago it was Jews being driven out their homes and their properties being marked with a symbol.
If we remain silent to this happening in Mosul, it will spread.
Changing an avatar by itself isn’t going to change or stop this, but raising awareness might. The more our leaders see we are concerned about what is happening, the more likely they are to exert political pressure. It is also a very small way of showing to those who are persecuted that people round the world do care about what is happening to them.
If you are a Christian, please pray for those who are persecuted, and change your avatar in support of them. If you are not a Christian then I would still ask you to change your avatar to show support for those who are being persecuted. If it helps think of #WeAreN as your very own #IAmSpartacus moment!
The letter ن may be difficult for you to add on to your avatar so I am uploading a number of themed avatars that incorporate it, please feel free to use on of these. All of these avatars use my own photography so there is no problems with you using them. Also providing I don’t get swamped with requests if you want me to add the ن and #WeAreN to your own avatar I am happy to do that too.

[BLOG] FAQ for Model/Studio Days
As I have another model day planned with Rhianna Grey this month, I thought it would be good to write an FAQ about Model Days for the benefit of those who may not be too familiar with them.
What is a Model Day?
It is a day when a named model is based at the studio and you can book her and the studio in hourly slots for an all-inclusive price. It is sometimes known as a slots day.
Can I book more than one hour?
Yes of course you can, in fact you most people do. There are a number of advantages in booking more than one hour, not least that one hour will be over before you know it. To allow time for change overs we normally have a 15min gap between the sessions that can be booked so if you do book more than one hour you get the 15min gap for free!
Do I have to set up the lights myself?
No. I am on hand to do the lighting for you if you wish. Just tell me what you want to achieve and I will set up for you.
What if I want to do my own lighting?
That’s fine too. I’ll keep out of your way if you want me to and leave you to get on with it.
I’ve only ever been to group shoots before, What if I might run out of ideas to shoot?
You probably won’t, most photographers find that once they get started the time goes very quickly and they don’t get through all the ideas they want to shoot. That’s another good reason for booking for more than one hour. But in the unlikely event that you do run out of ideas, both the model and I can give you suggestions on what you might want to shoot next.
Can I share the slot with another photographer?
Yes of course you can. In fact that is a great idea, book say three hours between two photographers and you get the two 15 min gaps between sessions, you get to bounce ideas of each other.
Ian, will you sit in on the shoot?
Only if I am asked to do so. Normally I sit in the office out of the way and get on with paperwork. If you want me to sit in on the shoot to provide advice and suggestions then I am happy to do so. Very occasionally a model may ask me to sit in on a shoot. This is extreamly rare but if it does happen there will be a good reason for it, such the model needing help with certain props.
Ian, do you shoot during my session?
No. You have booked for an hour of you shooting with the model. The only exceptions to this would be if the photographer invited me to take a few shots, or if I was asked to demonstrate a technique. Those who have been to training sessions at the studio will know my training style is very much “show and tell”. In either case the number of images I take are minimal and always only with your permission and at at your instigation.
What backgrounds, sets and props are available?
Tell me what you are looking for and I will advise. I have a range of different background papers, and painted backgrounds. Room sets may be possible but building and dismantling the sets (eg the Bed set or the boudoir set) all take time and may take a large chunk out of your hour slot, if you really want to shoot one of those let me know before booking and I will advise whether it is possible or not. I have too many props to list here – just let me know your theme and I will tell you if I have anything suitable.
This all sounds fantastic where can I book?
At the time of writing our next model/studio day will be on Saturday 30th August http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/rhianna-grey-studio-day-2/ for more information and to book your slots.
Photo of the Day
POTD Mon, 4 Aug 2014: 100 Years Later
First World War memorial service and candle lit walk at Woodbank Park
To mark 100 years since the start of the First World War there was a candle lit walk and open air service in Woodbank Park. I didn’t take many photos, that wasn’t why I was there but this one shot really stands out to me. The other images from the event can be seen here: http://photos.imb.biz/ww1atwoodbank
