This Friday Night at the Studio event will actually be an afternoon event.  Weather permitting we will split out time between shooting winter fashions outside and winter glamour in the studio.

For the outside shots think winter fashion, long cloats chunky sweaters, woolly hats, gloves and scarf.  After shooting this in the nearby Woodbank/Vernon parks, we return to the warmth of the studio for some winter studio based glamour.  Using the same outfit, or a least bits of it,  will shoot the same model in a glamour style… think winter coat over lingerie or implied topless with model just wearing scarf, gloves and hat.

Our model for this event will be the amazing Portia Victoria.  Portia’s first visit to the studio to the successful “glamour nude” night (See:  http://photos.imb.biz/model/shoot/portiabecky).  Since then Portia has been back twice for private hire bookings and this “Winter Warmer” event will be her fourth visit.  Portia is a very adaptable model and should be on your “must shoot” list.   Don’t miss this chance to work with her!

You can see Portia’s modelling profile on ModelMayhem: http://www.modelmayhem.com/800860# (As you might expect, there is some tasteful nudity).

A Christmas themed shoot.  Perhaps a model “Miss Santa” outfit?  Tinsel and wrapping paper? Perhaps party frocks and silly hat?  I’ll do my best to make sure the shoot is a cracker! (pun intended!)

Our model for this event will be studio regular Sarah Hobart.  Sarah informs me that she will be bringing her sexy santa outfit, a couple of party dresses and some red lingerie to the shoot, and I will ensure that we have a good range of seasonal props.  Our new seasonal red and green background papers will of course also be available to shoot against.

Although this is not a “topless” shoot per se, Sarah is willing to work to implied topless and topless levels for a few images during the evening.

A selection of images from Sarah’s shoots at the studio can be found here:  http://photos.imb.biz/model/sarah-scarlett

I am pleased to announce that our model for this event will be “Elora B”.  You can see Elora’s profile on ModelMayhem:  http://www.modelmayhem.com/2115352#

I’ve got a black and cream dress I can use for the first outfit. It’s a sweetheart neckline with a full circle skirt, about knee length I think (not had it on in a while).  I’ve got a few corsets so I can bring a couple if you like. Portia is going to lend me a performance outfit, she says, so I’ll get that off her asap.  And I have some nice pink frilly knickers if you want to do an implied topless.

In tonight’s session we are going to look at how to create images using light stencils.  In addition to a short tutorial on how to create your own stencils we will work inside and possibly outside the studio to create some weird and wonderful images images by combining simple strobist techniques with light stencils.

Here’s the images I am planning…

Geeky girl with with game controller surrounded by space invaders in front and behind her floating in the air. Goth surrounded by light bats.  Hippy chick with butterflies and flowers made of light.  And all these will be done in camera!!

You will need to bring with you.  A tripod… we will be doing long exposures.  One or more speedlights.

If you can also bring one or more shoe boxes with lids, kitchen foil, and a craft knife it will help.  If you don’t have any of those don’t panic I will have supplies and things you can borrow.  If you bring your own shoe box you can take your full light stencil away with you at the end of the evening.  Without it you will be able to take away the stencil but not the box to use with (I only have a limited number of she boxes!)

Helping us with this event as our model will be studio regular Sarah Hobart.

At some point all photographers get asked to photograph a wedding – even if it is on an informal basis just as a favour for a friend.  This workshop will introduce you to what is involved.
While taking the photographs is relatively straightforward what scares most photographers is the fact that you have limited time and only have one chance at a wedding.  In this workshop we give special emphasis on the ‘stage management’ role that a wedding photographer has to assume.  We look at the planning side, and how to make sure things run smoothly from a photographic perspective.  We conclude the workshop with the chance to photograph a bride and groom models.

At this Friday Night at the Studio session, Ian will be handing over to, “New to Photo” podcast host Rick Bradbury……

Hi everyone Rick here.

This event will follow one rule.. Keep it simple and off camera.

I will be showing how to create some great portraits using just one light, be it a small speedlite which many of you may own or studio lights that you will find in a studio like Ian’s.

Why only one light?

  • Well is cheaper than 2,3,4,5… you get the idea.
  • You gotta start somewhere right?
  • Starting Simple = One Light
  • It will get the job done, corporate head shot, couple portrait, group portrait or individual portrait. They can all be lit by just One Light.

Visual Intermission …

Image © Copyright & Used With Permission of R J Bradbury

How are we going to shoot?

We will be shooting on a simple white paper background (insert bed sheet for you diyers), with this one background we can make it white, off white, grey or go dark/black.

What will be covered?

  • What little gear you need
  • But I don’t have a studio space?
  • Modifiers and recommended Gear for starting out.
  • Get to know your gear – Camera, Lights
  • Off Camera lighting basics
  • Exposure Variables & Finding good exposure with out a light meter.
  • Placing your light and your starting point, highlights and shadows & Reflectors
  • Inverse Square Law
  • Shooting… as much as we can do.

I will produce a hand out for the event with notes that can be referred back to and a little something extra ;)

Like the lighting there will be one model on this event (TBA) so spaces are limited to 6 photographers so we all get time to shoot.

What you need.

  • DSLR Camera & Lens
  • Speedlite/Flash Gun if you have one
  • If you have any questions about the lighting gear you have then bring that along.
  • Your good self :)
  • Oh and £20 (Preferably the correct money)

Cost £20

Time: 7pm till 10pm..ish :)

See you on May 6th :)

Digital Rain, Digital Lightning and Wet-look Glamour

This one day training event will teach how to create wet-look glamour images and to add rain effects and lightning effects in Photoshop.

During the morning we will spend 2-3hours in the studio working with one or more models (depending on the number of photographers attending) to create the wet-look glamour images which will be the basis of our completed shots.  During this time you will learn how to set up the lights needed to create the effects.  You will learn some of the tricks employed to create wet-look images, including how to make the water droplets more visible, and how to control where the water goes.  The session is a practical session and you will have plenty of opportunity to take photographs.

Please note: due to the nature of some of the images and techniques being demonstrated at this event the model(s) will be posing topless for some of the shots.  If this is likely to cause offence please do not book to come on this course.

After lunch (which is included in the price of the course) we go into a tutorial session where you will be shown how to use Photoshop to add digital rain and digital lightning effects to the images we created during the morning session.   If you have a laptop with Photoshop on it you are welcome to bring it with you and follow the tutorials as we go through them.  Alternatively you can sit back, watch and then try out the techniques at your leisure at home.  Either way you will be provided with printed notes on how to achieve the effects and a CD with a video screencast showing you the steps for both digital rain and digital lightning.

Our model for this event will be Sarah-Scarlett (as shown in the image above).

Cost £69 (includes lunch, printed notes,  and a disk with video tutorial)

Woodbank Works, Turncroft Lane, Stockport, Cheshire, SK1 4AR

Saturday 2nd April 2011 – Night photography and painting with light

Time 5.30pm onwards.
Location.  Christ Church Woodford, Chester Road, Woodford, Stockport. SK7 1PR (View Map).

(The above image shows model Krissi at a previous night photography workshop at woodford)

Christ Church Woodford has a very atmospheric churchyard, which we have permission to use for this event.

The event will start with a short tutorial on night time photography, including painting with light techniques, day for night and strobist techniques.  As the light fades we will have the opportunity to practice the techniques involved in balancing the fading daylight with artificial light.

Throughout the evening you will be able to work on your own images at your pace using the atmospheric church yard and the model(s).  Alternatively work with other photographers sharing ideas and techniques.  For those who need it I will be offering practical advice in small groups and one-to-one through out the event.

Once it is completely dark we will use painting with light techniques and multiple off-camera flash techniques.

Depending on the number of photographers booking to come we will have at least one model and probably two available to add ‘human interest’ into the atmospheric images we will be producing.  If we have a large number of photographers booking for this event additional models will be booked.

Printed notes detailing the techniques will be supplied and snacks / tea & coffee will be available throughout the event

This is the fourth time I have run a night photography event at Woodford and each time the event has proven to be very popular.

In addition to your camera for this event you will need to bring a tripod and a torch.  If you have an external flash gun, wireless flash triggers, and portable lighting stands you may wish to bring those as well.  I will have spare wireless triggers, flash guns, stands and even a spare tripod or two that can be borrowed on the night.  So if you don’t have your own don’t let that put you off booking for this event.

Cost £25.00 per person (if paid in advance) £30.00 if paid on the day.

To book a place on this event please contact me.  A £10 deposit secures a place.  You can pay your deposit or the full fee on-line using this page

Adding our model to the front cover of a book or magazine.

Creating an image of a person coming out of a pile sweets.

While the set ups tonight will be a bit of fun – the techniques used are ones that can be used in the real world.  For example I have used the cluedo, book cover, and sweet images  used to publicise different plays for a local theatre.

You don’t need to be a photographer – just pop-in, say hello, and help me celebrate the opening. If you are a photographer I’m planing that there will be at least one model in the main studio and hopefully a table top studio available for you to use.

Tea, coffee, soft drinks and snacks will be available.

Special discounts will be available for studio hire, workshops and events if booked and paid for at the opening weekend (Workshop and Events Programme to be published shortly).

Directions

If you are heading up Turncroft Lane from Hall Street (A626) towards Woodbank Park, you pass New Zealand Road on the left, Woodbank works is the next opening on the left. The studio is in the building on the right (White entrance up a small flight of steps). As you come through the main gates parking is behind the building to the left of gates.
