Using a mixture of speedlights and studio lights we will apply the same techniques that we might normally use to light people in the studio to figurines. I am running this event in association with “C3”. “C3” is a small Christian group that is trying to explore their faith through the creative arts. The event is open to anyone of any faith or of no faith. There will be no preaching or “Bible bashing” just a chance for you to look at some psalms and a chance to create photographs based on them.
We will meet at 2pm at the Studio and then walk down to the parks, which are at the end of the road. At the end of the photo walk there will be chance to come back to the studio for a cup of tea and to share the images you have created.

The event is free but it would help me to know if you are coming so that I can make sure we have the right number of printed materials and just as importantly enough tea, coffee and biscuits.
[BOOK HERE]At some point all photographers get asked to photograph a wedding – even if it is on an informal basis just as a favour for a friend. This workshop will introduce you to what is involved.
While taking the photographs is relatively straightforward what scares most photographers is the fact that you have limited time and only have one chance at a wedding. In this workshop we give special emphasis on the ‘stage management’ role that a wedding photographer has to assume.
We look at the planning side, and how to make sure things run smoothly from a photographic perspective. We go through the day looking at different scenes that wedding photographers have to photograph.
We conclude the workshop with the chance to photograph bride and groom models.
(Please note: 4 or more attendees are required to be able to book both bride and groom models. If there are 2 or 3 attendees on the workshop we will only have a bride model to shoot. With only 1 attendee I can still run the workshop as a one-to-one training session but would not be able to offer the chance to shoot).
Cost £69 (Includes lunch and notes)
Full payment or a deposit of £25 is required to secure a place – please book using the form below.
In this workshop we look at a number of simple studio lighting techniques starting with zero lights (using only window light) up to using four lights. We also look at some basic techniques for posing subjects and for working with models.
We will look at how different light modifiers such as umbrellas, softboxes, snoots, grids and gels can be used. There will be time during the day for you to practise these techniques with the help of a professional model. We will cover basic posing techniques which are suitable for photographing friends, family, customers or even models. We will also look at the biggest cheat of all for posing people in the studio – the use of props.
Printed notes to document the techniques we will look at during the day will be provided and a buffet lunch is included in the price of the event. Numbers will be limited to 6 photographers.
Details of our model for this event will be published later.
You can see some images taken at previous versions of this workshop in this gallery…

The course is 7 sessions long and will be running fortnightly on Tuesday evenings 7.30pm – 10pm. starting Tuesday 10 September [callout title=What others say]This is what previous attendees have said about the course:
“We’re delighted that we chose to attend the introduction to digital photography course. We’re now far more confident with the DLSR camera, and understand what we are doing. Ian’s course is wonderfully clear and structured, supported by ample notes and exercises, and delivered in a thoroughly professional, yet touchingly patient and warm way. The ‘critique’ section at the start of each workshop was especially helpful for learning and the manual provided is absolutely excellent. It’s a pleasure to learn from such a skilled and knowledgeable practitioner as Ian.” Sophie Brown & Adrian West, March 2011
“Super course :-)” -AB
“It was FAB – thank you very much!!” – HH
“Ian is really really good and combines a ‘simple’ powerpoint presentation with comprehensive notes and so forth for your retention and even sets practical and creative tasks and runs critiques etc. This has benefited me already ! I wish I’d been on something like that when I was at college (!)” – DG[/callout]
The course content will include the following:
- Composition, seeing and finding great photos.
- Camera settings – understand what your camera can do
- Getting the camera off auto: understanding F-Stops, shutter speeds, focal lengths and ISO
- White balance – what is it and when to change it
- Flash photography. Creative ways to use your flash gun to enhance your photos
- Controlling the light – reflectors, defusers and filters.
- RAW and JPG – what’s the difference? Why shoot RAW? How to process it
- Downloading, processing and editing.
- Sharing your photos on-line
- Photography in difficult conditions: at night, in the heat of the day, in the rain.
- Photo critiques – learning how to assess your photos and teaching yourself to improve.
The course is aimed at beginners and those who wish to consolidate their photographic knowledge. As with any course the time spent on any given subject will be tailored to reflect the current knowledge and experience of those attending.
Printed course materials (over 100 pages of notes) will be provided to all attendees. Throughout the course there will be opportunities should you wish to have your photographs assessed to help you improve.

For those stills photographers who are more interested in creating messy art nude images I will be rerunning my popular messy art nude workshop later in the year.

[BOOK HERE]Glamour is probably the most difficult photographic genre to define, and the boundary between glamour nude and art nude is fuzzy to say the least. In tonight’s event let’s challenge our perceptions of what is glamour and take a more creative approach.
We will look at how revealing less can add more to a glamour image. Although our model will be working to glamour nude levels we will use lighting techniques and/or props to hide, reveal and to tease.
I am pleased to announce that the model for this event will be Michela see: http://purpleport.com/portfolio/littleleveller/?referer=iansstudio – Michela has been to the studio in the past and I have worked with her twice before having the studio.

We will be using both tungsten continuous lights and flash for this along with camera or subject movement with a view to creating ghosting in camera.
The results will be different every shot so it’s great fun experimenting with this technique. Along with basic camera or subject movement we will use lens zoom to create an interesting effect.
You may want to bring a tripod for some set ups where the camera needs to be locked in.

- Torches – More powerful ones are better generally.
- Other types of lights.

[BOOK HERE]
Tonight’s event will be run by Rick Bradbury (Ian is directing “Agnes of God” at Woodford). The event is all about creating shadows patterns with light and objects/props that we can fire a light at or through.
So think pattern shapes made from cardboard or household items. If you can fire a light at it and it has some holes in it we can create a pattern of light on our model.
Rick will bring along a few items but by all means feel free to bring your own.
You can see an example of this in the eFlyer, for this shot Rick had a speedlite in the Westcott Apollo soft box with Grid, placed the speedlite at the back of the soft box turned it towards the grid and fired the bare light at the grid which created the pattern you see.
So get ready for an evening of fun and experimentation with light and shadows.
The model for this event is Katherine Georgina (who is also the model on the eFlyer). http://purpleport.com/portfolio/katherinegeorgina/
Price £22
We will need a minimum of 4 photographers booking for this to go ahead. The maximum number will be 7. So get your place booked now.

http://photos.imb.biz/model/shoot/cez_j – please note as you might expect the gallery contains some nudity.
Our model for this event is Cez_J. Cez was the model I worked with on the above test shoot – you can find her profile on Purpleport : http://purpleport.com/portfolio/cezj/?referrer=iansstudio

It’s the longest day of the year so join us for a fun and frantic mega model night… in the park. If you have been to one of our mega model nights before you will know how they work. A group of models working on a “time for images” basis. Photographers and models shoot together one-to-one for twenty minutes. When the whistle blows a different pairings are allocated and we begin again.
Models attending this event will be working on a “time for images” basis and by attending this event you agree to provide the model with images from your shoots.
As we will be outside for this event, you will probably want to bring your own strobist gear to work with. Hopefully, as it is the longest day of the year there will still be some day light to shoot by for most of the event.
So far I have the following models confirmed for the mega model night:
- Jenna Gale – http://www.jennagale.co.uk/
- Lycanicia Tala – http://purpleport.com/portfolio/lycaniciatala/?referrer=ianbutty
- Belisana (aka cute-as-sin) – http://purpleport.com/portfolio/cuteassin?referrer=iansstudio

Kayleigh has suffered burns to her stomach and legs from an accident with a kettle. We are thus rescheduling the event to Monday 17th June, by which stage most of the red marks should have healed *****

This time with just four photographers shooting for four hours you will get plenty of time to work with Jess.
Jess will be bringing a selection of different looks including steam punk and fantasy.
You can see Jess’s purpleport portfolio here: http://purpleport.com/portfolio/sevensin/?referrer=iansstudio

[BOOK HERE]Something a bit different for this “Friday Night at the Studio” event. I keep getting people asking me what is involved in getting an LRPS or and ARPS from the Royal Photographic Society. At this event I will explain the process. I will show you my LRPS and ARPS panels and provide you with some feedback/critique on any panels you are planing to submit to the society.
This event is a rerun of the RPS distinctions night that I ran a year ago. Those who attended last time found the event very helpful in preparing their submissions.
Please Note: Although I am a member of the RPS and I have an ARPS distinction. I hold no position with the RPS and this session is not authorised by the RPS. The views expressed are my own and are based on lessons I learned while preparing my own images for submission.

[BOOK HERE]Popular vintage/pin-up model Laura Norrey comes to Ian’s Studio tonight for her first “Friday Night at the Studio” event.
Laura has featured on posters for the Saddleworth Vintage & Handmade Fair and on the front cover of The Vintage Directory, as well as creating and modelling for a 50s pin-up charity calendar (Memory Lane), which raised over £2,000 for the Alzheimer’s Society.
We will be concentrating on the 1950’s for this vintage shoot – so think Hollywood Glamour, think Rock-a-billy, think pin-up!

For tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event, we are going to look at the challenge of working with props. We are going to look at how simple props can dramatically change the images we are creating.
Working with an experienced model the format of the evening will be a series of quick rounds where you direct the model to use a single prop in lots of different ways. Keeping each round short encourages you to think quickly and experiment to create a variety of looks.
We have a range of props at the studio including hats, glasses, feather bowers, telephones, swords, wigs, lengths of material, etc.
Our model for this evening will be Ellie Sky (See: http://purpleport.com/portfolio/ells/?referrer=iansstudio). Ellie acts as well as models and has been booked because of the acting skills which will ensure she has the improvisational skills necessary for this event.

[BOOK HERE]On 19th May 2003 – I became a full-time, freelance photographer. A little over 2 years previously I set myself the goal of going freelance before I was 40. I made it with 4 days to spare.
To celebrate those 10 years as a freelance photographer and to celebrate my 50th birthday I am having a studio open day.
Free use of the studio facilities, plenty of chance to socialise over cups of tea and coffee. The day is open to photographers, models, make-up artists and anyone else who knows me and who just wants to drop in.
I’m not taking booking for this, but it would really help be if you can let me know if you are coming and approximately what time. I wouldn’t want to run out of biscuits!
[BOOK HERE]For tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event we are going to take a different perspective on Art Nude photography. The aim from each set up is to create 3 images that will work together to form a triptych.A triptych is a display of three images that work well together. These may be three complimentary images, three contrasting image, or even three sections of a single image.
At this event we will look at various ideas which we can use to find three images from one or more set-ups. We will look at techniques such as using props as a common feature, the use of poses to unite the three images.
It is planned that we will include bodyscape triptychs as as well as more traditional art nude triptychs.
I am pleased to announce that our model for this event will be Viola Elisabeth (See: http://purpleport.com/portfolio/violaelisabeth/?referrer=iansstudio)

[BOOK HERE]Ian will be leading his team out in Outside Edge in Woodford tonight, so Rick is again running our weekly Friday Night at the Studio Event – here’s what he says about it….
For tonight’s Friday night event we will be working with the lovely Sarah Mansfield again, Sarah has a great personality and is always fun to work with and brings with her dance and movement skills that can be incorporated into the location shots.
Sarah’s model profile can be found below.
Purple Port http://purpleport.com/portfolio/sarahlmansfield/
Even though we have 2 parks nearby we wont be using them, instead we will work outside the studio using the surrounding industrial and urban areas. Think if it as a photowalk / model shoot. The feel will be urban so the clothing will match.
If you have your own Strobist gear feel free to bring it and set a shot up whilst another is being made but travel light so we can move around.
One catch with this event, I want you to set up your shot and make it. If you need help no problem but try to get out of your comfort zone and make your image. If you are an experienced shooter great, if not help is on hand.
The first hour will be shooting set ups I will light and demo, then it’s your floor. FYI you can still make your shot even if I have set up lights.. unsure how? Ask me on the night.
If the UK weather decides to mess us about we will either try to find shelter to work in or go back to the studio.. Don’t worry if we have to retreat back to the studio I’ve got plans for that just in case. :)
Gear to bring…
- Camera
- 1-2 lens (recommend a fast F2.8 or faster lens)
- 1 Light or 2
- You may want to bring a light stand – I will have 2 in the kit but bringing your own will allow you to set up a shot ready.
- A modifier you want to use. I will have 2 with me.
Max number is 6 so you have time to setup and shoot. Book your place via the website quick.
Price £25 for a good nights shooting and feedback.
See you April 26th

Christ Church Woodford has a very atmospheric churchyard, which we have permission to use for this event.
The event will start with a short tutorial on night time photography, including painting with light techniques, day for night and strobist techniques. As the light fades we will have the opportunity to practice the techniques involved in balancing the fading daylight with artificial light.
Throughout the evening you will be able to work on your own images at your pace using the atmospheric church yard and the model(s). Alternatively work with other photographers sharing ideas and techniques. For those who need it I will be offering practical advice in small groups and one-to-one through out the event.
Once it is completely dark we will use painting with light techniques and multiple off-camera flash techniques.
Depending on the number of photographers booking to come we will have at least one model and probably two available to add ‘human interest’ into the atmospheric images we will be producing. If we have a large number of photographers booking for this event additional models will be booked.
Printed notes detailing the techniques will be supplied and snacks / tea & coffee will be available throughout the event
This is the sixth time I have run a night photography event at Woodford and each time the event has proven to be very popular.
In addition to your camera for this event you will need to bring a tripod and a torch. If you have an external flash gun, wireless flash triggers, and portable lighting stands you may wish to bring those as well. I will have spare wireless triggers, flash guns, stands and even a spare tripod or two that can be borrowed on the night. So if you don’t have your own don’t let that put you off booking for this event.
