An afternoon in Vernon Park shooting winter fashion images.  Think winter coats, warm hats, gloves and scarf.  We will use a mix of available light and strobist techniques.

We meet at Ian’s Studio as normal and will walk to the park which is literally 2 minutes up the road.

If you have your own strobist gear (speedlights, stands, modifiers etc) you might want to bring them along.  If not, you can use the studio equipment.

Another of our popular table-top photography nights.  This week we will have the opportunity to create dramatic images of Lord of the Rings gaming miniatures and dioramas.

We will use lighting techniques to enhance the painting and construction of the figures and scenery.

Among the dioramas that will be available to work with will be a recreation of Weathertop and possibly a recreation of Khazad Dum.

To make the most of this event you will need a macro lens and/or extension tubes.  You will also need a tripod.  I have a couple of spare tripods at the studio that can be borrowed for the evening, and canon users can borrow extension tubes.

Glamour photography evening with an emphasis on the use of oil and water on the model’s body.

We will use lighting techniques to highlight the effects of oil on our subject’s body and making sure that water droplets will show up.

Our model will be working to glamour nude levels.

Another is our series of messy workshops/shoots.  This time our model is the amazing Axa Jay.

Axa is a very experienced model who has done numerous messy shoots in the past, and can she can be found on many messy fetish websites.

Messy workshops / messy group shoots at Ian’s studio tend to be a mix between messy art nude set-ups and set-ups with a more messy fetish (sploshing) aspect to them.  Because of Axa’s experience the emphasis this time is going to be more towards the splosh style of shoot.  Although, there will be some time for some arty shots should anyone want to shoot that style.

At this Friday Night at the Studio event, we will be creating glamour images involving water splashes.

We will be using strobes in the studio to freeze the action as water is thrown at our glamour model.  We will work on a number of different set-ups from small splashes to large splashes.

For some of the images the model will be working clothed for others she will be nude.

In this workshop we look at a number of simple studio lighting techniques starting with zero lights (using only window light) up to using four lights.  We also look at some basic techniques for posing subjects and for working with models.

We will look at how different light modifiers such as umbrellas, softboxes, snoots, grids and gels can be used.  There will be time during the day for you to practise these techniques with the help of a professional model.  We will cover basic posing techniques which are suitable for photographing friends, family, customers or even models.   We will also look at the biggest cheat of all for posing people in the studio – the use of props.

Printed notes to document the techniques we will look at during the day will be provided and a buffet lunch is included in the price of the event.  Numbers will be limited to 6 photographers.

In this full-day workshop you will learn how to work with both models and members of the public on your photo shoots.  The workshop will be led jointly by Ian M Butterfield and Rick Bradbury

You will learn techniques for interacting with your subjects to bring out their personality.  How to find poses which work well for your subject.

We will work with both male and female models and also look at how to pose couples.

Outdoor photography at night with multiple speedlights/strobes.  Weather permitting we will shoot in the grounds of the works and look at different ways to illuminate both model and location.

Take the challenge of working with a male model to create stunning art nude images.

We will look at different posing and lighting techniques for working with male models.  We will start with semi clothed images, and  progress through to full male nude.

The course will consist of eight sessions (session 5 on glamour, boudoir, & art nude is optional).  Each session will be two and half hours in length.

Each session will look at one or two related genres of photography.  We will cover techniques and equipment, and I will be providing practical advice and where appropriate I’ll share experiences from a professional perspective.

Each session will leave you with some homework to reinforce the skills and techniques we have talked about.

The course is aimed at photographers who have a reasonable level of photographic knowledge.  I have designed the course to be particularly suitable for those who have already completed my “Introduction to Digital Photography” course.  If you have not completed that course, you should have an understanding of photographic techniques such as exposure, aperture, controlling depth of field, etc.  Experience of using flash guns is useful but not essential.  As with any course the time spent on any given subject will be tailored to reflect the current knowledge and experience of those attending.

Printed course materials will be provided to all attendees.  Throughout the course there will be opportunities should you wish to have your photographs assessed to help you improve.

Places on the course will be limited.  

Please note: The course is designed for users of DSLR cameras.  If you have a “compact” camera or a “bridge” camera please contact me to discuss its suitability for this course.

The theme for tonight’s “Friday Night at the Studio” event will be dance.  We will be working with a professional dancer to create dance related images.

Throughout the evening there will be chances to photograph ballet poses, charleston (1920s flapper) and modern jazz dance styles.

I have been accepted to lead one of the the Scott Kelby World Wide Photo Walks.  Mine will be round Stockport (don’t laugh… we have plenty of history and lots of interesting things to photograph here!).  It’s on Saturday 13th October.

Zombie Candy (aka Amber) will be returning to the studio for this event.  Amber will be working to nude levels.  

Using low-key lighting, and some of the studio props and sets we will work with Amber to create a series of erotic nude images.

For tonight’s event we will look at how to use your camera for timelapse photography.  There will be a opportunity to create a short time-lapse sequence in the studio and time to look at the editing and processing techniques required to convert the image sequences in to a short video sequence.

This event will also see the unveiling of the long-awaited time-lapse of the the studio being built!

At this event there will be an opportunity to make a short timelapse video in the studio.  Please bring your camera and your tripod.  If you have a cable release or timer release for your camera please bring it with you.  You may also wish to bring a laptop if you want to have a try at editing your time lapse.

Time for some mud and blood… at tonight’s event we will give you the opportunity to create an image of a muddied and bloodied warrior.

The model for the event will be Dante-Layla.  Dante-Layla has worked with me previously to create images in this style.

Creating the messy warrior look will not take the entire evening.  The first part of the evening we will use make-up techniques and work with Dante to create a battered and bruised boxer look.

Note:  We are working with messy substances as part of this shoot, while it is not intended that photographers will get messy, you might wish to wear old clothes just in case.

With the addition of a smoke machine to the studio, tonight we are going to look at glamour photography with a smoke look to it.

Think dark backgrounds, coloured gels picking up the smoke.  Our model will be working to glamour nude for this event.

Due to the nature of using a smoke machine in a relatively small studio we will not be able to have the machine running for the entire evening.  In between sets using the smoke we will look at other glamour techniques such as using oil on the models body and creating a wet look effect (without using the studio shower).

The recent “wet and wild” glamour shoot using the shower in the studio proved to be so successful that people are asking me to run it again!  

This time it will be on a Wednesday and you can choose to come during the afternoon to shoot with one model or come in the evening and shoot with two models under the shower.  Or better still why not come to both?

The models will be working to glamour nude levels and there will also be opportunities to shoot clothed shots under the shower too.

A good make up artist can make a real difference to the images we shoot.  Tonight we will work with a talented local MUA.  The theme of shoot will be the bold and beautiful.

For tonight’s event we will be paying the MUA but the models will be working on a TF* (“Time For”) basis, which means if you book you MUST agree to supply them (and the MUA) with copies of your images so that they can use them in their portfolios.

We aim to have three different models at the studio, the first of whom will be made-up by the make-up artist prior to the event starting the other models will be made-up during the evening while we are shooting.

Tonight’s event will be something a bit different.  This latest event in our popular table-top photography events will enable you photograph water drop collisions.  Photographer Stephen Ennis will be bring to the studio a specialist set-up which not only controls the flash, but controls the number and rate of water dropletsThe set-up uses electronics and solenoids to control the water droplets and there by ensure ensure we can capture spectacular droplet collisions every shots.

In addition to this I will show you how you can still create interesting water droplet images using very basic items you can find around the home.

Tonight’s “Friday Night at the Studio” event will again be hosted by Rick Bradbury.  For tonight’s Friday night event it’s time to shoot with 1 two 3 lights. 

I have run a One Light Night twice before at the studio, it was all about the basics of flash exposure. It’s now time to kick it up a gear and shoot starting with 1 light then moving to 2 and finally 3.

I will be on hand to set up some light sets if needed, but the idea is for you to take the bull by the horns so to speak and have at it.  See what different images you can create.

First hour will be shooting with 1 light, any modifier you want, inside or outside the studio (weather permitting).  Experiment with light position, working distance from a background and test your self to see how many different images you can make using this simple setup.  We can get you shooting pretty quick in this set as multiples lights with different modifiers can be set up ready to switch out.

Second hour (with outfit change) will be bringing in a second light. Now you have a key and a fill, or key and background light, Key light & hair light, Key light & rim light.  Experiment & think outside the box.

Third Hour (with outfit change) we will add a third light opening up yet more options.

I want this event to be more about shooting some great images and experimenting with light placement, I will of course be on hand to help or answer any questions you may have.

I can’t wait to see what image you can come up with.

Oh I may need a willing volunteer to help rig lights, just so its keeps things moving fast during the evening.

Something a bit different for this “Friday Night at the Studio” event.  I keep getting people asking me what is involved in getting an LRPS or and ARPS from the Royal Photographic Society.

At this event I will explain the process.  Show you my LRPS and ARPS panels and provide you with some feedback/critique on any panels you are planing to submit to the society.

Another in our series of popular messy days.  This time we will work with two established glamour models to create messy images involving two models and messy substances.

This event is designed to build on the topics covered at the Messy Art Nude Workshops run earlier this year.  This time we will be working on images that require two models to create.  This day is ideal for those who have previously attended one of the workshops.  (although that is not a prerequisite).

Our models will be working up to nude levels. And there is plenty of scope within the day to work on messy ideas that those attending may wish to bring to the event.  If you have a very specific idea you wish to try please let me know before hand so that I can schedule the different set-ups in the most efficient way.

This event will again be hosted and led by Rick Bradbury.  At it we will be looking at and working with shadows but not just shadows on our subject.  We will be looking at making abstract images, photographing shadows and shapes both with and with out a subject in frame, as well as using shadows to create interesting patterns on the background and may be even fool the images viewer.

Shadows are an important aspect of any photograph as they create depth and shape in what is a 2 dimensional image. They can also create mood, but they have to be delivered well and made part of the composition like in the image above.

You will be shooting allot and have free run to experiment with light placement and shadow placement as well as creating interesting backgrounds using shadows of objects, props or a person or two.

What you will need:

• Camera and Kit lens
• Memory Cards
• Anything that can have a light fired at it to create a pattern / shadow on the background.  I will bring a few items but feel free to bring what you have.

This weeks event will be led and hosted by Scottish Geek Photography’s Stephen Roberts.  At this event you will have the opportunity to shoot a mixture of latex fashion and art nude with model Strawberry Venom.

This event will be a re run (with a twist) of a popular event at Ian’s Studio the One Light Night.  The last time this was run back in May 2011 it was a popular event and we have requests to re-run it so others can attend.  Again the event will be hosted and run by “New to Photos”‘s Rick Bradbury

For this event we will be working with just one light, why?  Well you can truly do allot with just that one single light and it’s a great place to start if you are new to using light or flashes. The key when starting out is keep it simple, start somewhere and then move on…that somewhere is with One Light.

During this event I will cover the basics of finding a good (no such thing as correct) flash exposure so you can start to practice and become comfortable with dialling in a good exposure with your camera and your light.  Remember I said Your and this is where the twist comes in.. I want you to bring your speedlite (what most people start with) your modifier (if you have one), your stand and bracket and your wireless triggers. But the studio has studio lights we can use?  Yup it does but using those lights won’t help you with getting to learn and know your gear.

You will be using your gear, learning about flash exposure and making the images happen yourself (with my help), I’m not going to use a light meter and tell you what settings because that’s of no help to you, this event is designed to help beginners to flash photography and using one light.  So if you have some lighting gear but have yet to learn how to use it then this is for you.  Of course regular studio event attendees/advanced photographers are more than welcome but this is to help people new to using off camera lighting.

We will look at where to start with gear/ modifiers and positioning your light (a subjective choice).  Learning the basics will help your photography far more than buying new gear any day and with the skills learnt (then practiced!) you will be free to attend future studio events with out these basics getting in the way.. freeing you up to shoot shoot shoot.

I look forward to meeting you at the event and starting you on your journey with off camera lighting and kick starting your to gaining control of the gear you own.

What you will need.

• Your Camera and kit lens (feel free to bring other lens but keep it simple)
• Your speedlite (one) and some batteries (bring spares)
• Your wireless triggers, the studio has triggers available but if your have your own bring them.
• Your Stands and brackets if you’re unsure on how they work/set up.

• Questions – if you have any about this stuff then write them down.  I’m not leaving until I answer them all.
• Desire to learn and get to know your own gear and further your photography, this wont cover it all but it will get you started and on your way.

At tonight’s Friday night at the studio session we will be looking at how to create multiplicity style images.

With the help of a model, we will set up a number of different scenes in which the model will appear multiple times.  Examples of the type of image we may create include a six armed person; a poker scene where our model is playing all the players, or an outdoor scene where the model is in the scene many times.

This one day training event will teach how to create wet-look glamour images and to add rain effects and lightning effects in Photoshop.

During the morning we will spend 2-3hours in the studio working with one or more models (depending on the number of photographers attending) to create the wet-look glamour images which will be the basis of our completed shots.

During this time you will learn how to set up the lights needed to create the effects.  You will learn some of the tricks employed to create wet-look images, including how to make the water droplets more visible, and how to control where the water goes.  The session is a practical session and you will have plenty of opportunity to take photographs.

Please note: due to the nature of some of the images and techniques being demonstrated at this event the model(s) will be posing topless for some of the shots.  If this is likely to cause offence please do not book to come on this course.

After lunch (which is included in the price of the course) we go into a tutorial session where you will be shown how to use Photoshop to add digital rain and digital lightning effects to the images we created during the morning session.   If you have a laptop with Photoshop on it you are welcome to bring it with you and follow the tutorials as we go through them.  Alternatively you can sit back, watch and then try out the techniques at your leisure at home.  Either way you will be provided with printed notes on how to achieve the effects and a CD with a video screencast showing you the steps for both digital rain and digital lightning.

Tonight we will be working with an an art nude model and one or more live snakes.

We take the well being of all the animals involved in this shoot very seriously.  The snakes will be provided by an experienced snake handler who will take care of all the animals involved in the shoot.  Amber herself keeps snakes and spiders and is thus used to handling them.

One of the limitations with macro photography is the very shallow depth of field.  At this Friday night event we will explore the use of focus stacking when doing macro photography work.

If you have your own macro lenses, or extension tubes please bring them along.  If you are a canon shooter I will have some that you can borrow.

Other kit to bring: tripod and focusing rails if you have them.  (Don’t panic if you don’t as I have both at the studio that you can use).  If you wish to follow through the focus stacking techniques on your own laptop you are welcome to bring that along too.

Once we have taken a set of images, I will guide you through techniques for combining the images together to get that all important wide depth of field.

Something a little different for the glamour photographers out there.  A chance to shoot some costume orientated glamour images.

We will be concentrating on creating cheeky glamour images and pin-up poses.  Think carry-on, think seaside postcard!

In this workshop we look at a number of simple studio lighting techniques starting with zero lights (using only window light) up to using four lights.  We also look at some basic techniques for posing subjects and for working with models.

We will look at how different light modifiers such as umbrellas, softboxes, snoots, grids and gels can be used.  There will be time during the day for you to practise these techniques with the help of a professional model.  We will cover basic posing techniques which are suitable for photographing friends, family, customers or even models.   We will also look at the biggest cheat of all for posing people in the studio – the use of props.

Printed notes to document the techniques we will look at during the day will be provided and a buffet lunch is included in the price of the event.  Numbers will be limited to 6 photographers.

It’s table top night again.  This time the theme is food.  We will look at some of the photographic tricks used to make images of food look especially mouth watering.  

We will look at different techniques including how to add steam to an image (believe me, once you know how it is done images of steaming food will NOT look quite so appealing ever again!); how to make some food look especially fresh.  We will also look at lightbox techniques and if possibly have the water tank available for anyone who wants to try a food drop image.

At this event we move away from the “size zero” models and turn out attention to photographing a larger model.  Come along, take the challenge and prove that big is beautiful too.

For this event we will work with one or two plus size models (depending on how many photographers book).  We will look at techniques for different types of images from simple portraits to a more glamour style of image.

To celebrate the first birthday of “Ian’s Studio” we will be having a studio open day.  Drop-in any time during the day (from 10am till 5pm… or possibly later!) use the facilities free of charge and take the opportunity to network with other photographers and models.

Sooner or later every photographer needs a photograph of him or herself.  Most of us don’t like posing for other photographers, so tonight we will look at some techniques for getting self portraits.

We will look at simple techniques for setting up your camera and ensuring you get yourself in focus.  We will look at not only studio lighting set-ups but also strobist techniques that can be used anywhere.  Of course many of the lighting set-ups can also be used for any portrait shoot.

Finally in addition to all this I will show you the techniques involved in creating a surreal self-portrait.  (See the image advertising this event).

We’ve all seen the glamour clichés… and at some point we will all shoot them.  Come along tonight, shoot them and get them out of your system ….and move on.

At this event we will have one or two models (depending on the number of photographers) working to glamour nude level.

I have a number of clichés to get us started but I’m hoping you will come with your clichéd glamour ideas too.  The idea is that we shoot each cliché then we will work as a group to modify it into something more original.

Tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio session will be another of our popular table top photography sessions.  In this session we will look a number of different table top techniques including how we can use painting with light techniques to create interesting still life compositions.

In addition to your camera you will need a torch, a tripod and if you have one an off camera flash gun.  I have tripods, speedlights and torches at the studio which you can use if you don’t have your own.

Different types of torches are useful, single led torches can be used for light writing and larger traditional torches are useful for painting light to larger areas of the object being photographed.

Glass or crystal objects work well with some of the techniques we will be looking at so if you want to bring objects to photograph, please do.

To celebrate the Chinese New Year, (which falls on 23rd January) this week’s Friday Night at the Studio will have a very Chinese flavour to it.  This will be a rare opportunity to photograph a Chinese Lion Dancer in the studio!  Don’t miss it!

We will have not only the Chinese lion dancer to photograph but hopefully an oriental model with some traditional Chinese outfits.  For those who enjoy photographing still life there will be some Chinese drums to photograph too.

This weeks event (rescheduled from the beginning of December) will be hosted by Rick Bradbury.  The theme will be Fashion Photography.

Rick will guide photographers through posing and lighting a fashion model.

Here’s how Rick describes the event:

You will be working with simple lighting setups and an experienced model to great some great fashion portraits with dynamic poses.  This is more about getting results from your subject than lighting so photographer/subject interaction is key…. And shoot shoot shoot.

The lighting sets that we will be using …

• Single Beauty Dish with sock (not the type you wear)
• 7’ Parabolic Umbrella.
• 30-40 Degree Grids.
• If we have time we will set up white seemless also.

Happy New Year Everyone.  The first studio event for the New Year, and its time to get back to shooting.  For this Friday event we will be running 3 lighting set ups.

1. Head Shots. (Standing and Seated)
Using a single light and for some shots background lights you will be getting some great head shots using modifiers light the 28” beauty dish, 28” Apollo and 60” umbrella.

2. Half/Three Quarter Length.
Moving to half and three quarter length shots we will run a multi light set up of a key light, rim and hair lights. Using some of the larger modifiers to get the coverage required. Posing will become more challenging as we now have hands to deal with, but also don’t forget body weight and stance.

3. Full Length
On to shooting full length for more posing options. Using large light sources such as the 7ft Parabolic Umbrella and 60” Umbrella to light full length poses.

Each set will have approx 50 min of time (to allow for set and outfit changes) so you will have plenty of time to shoot and get the shot for each one.

During this event the key thing is – Photographer to Subject relationship, got to talk, get to know and build up trust to get the great shots.. after all we have the time to.
