Fellow Photographers,
Firstly I want to start this weeks newsletter with a welcome to 30 new subscribers who were all fellow travellers on the “Northern Lights” cruise, that I have been lecturing on for the last couple of weeks. In their honour I am starting this weeks newsletter with two images from that trip.
My featured article this week is a short piece on “Rembrandt Lighting” which is one of the classic lighting set-up for portraiture.
I would also like to draw your attention to the two events taking place at the studio this week. On Friday evening we have a Glamour Girl Night and the following day is my one day Art Nude Photography Workshop. We still have places available on both events.
For details of all of this and more… please read on…
Photos of the Day
POTD Fri, 6 Mar 2015: Cathedral of the Northern Lights

Cathedral of the Northern Lights
The Northern City of Alta is a strange place. The city has grown considerably in recent years and it have a very unusual mix there is evidence of traditional buildings if you keep your eyes open for it, but most of the city centre have a very 21st century, if not futuristic feel to it. No building shows this more than the cathedral of the northern lights. This church is only a few years old and is quite a remarkable piece of architecture both inside and out.
This image was show with the intention of putting it through Color Efex Pro to bring out the the detail and texture of the sky.

What is Rembrandt Lighting?
You may have heard the term but never understood what it is? But what exactly IS Rembrandt Lighting?
It is a little out of favour these days but Rembrandt Lighting is a style of lighting for portraits. The key feature of Rembrandt lighting is the small triangle of light under the subject’s eye. The lighting is named after the artist Rembrandt who when painting is subjects used to paint the light falling on their faces this way.

For this lighting the main light source is placed at 45 degrees to the subject and a little above their head.

Changing the position of the light to extend the light triangle so that the shadow from the nose no longer connects with shadow on the far side of the face is known as loop lighting.
The above notes and lighting diagram are taken from the 94 page notes that accompany our “Comprehensive Studio Course” which starts in May.

Saturday, 21 March 2015 – Art Nude Workshop

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Price: £82
At this workshop will look at a number of classic art nude set-ups. Including single light set-ups to multi light set-up. Each lighting set will be documented in the printed notes that accompany the workshop.
The day will be suitable for those who are a little unsure about where to start with art nude photography; but time will be built into the day to enable more experienced photographers to build on these set-ups.
We will look at some basic techniques to bring out the best in the subject you are photographing, including how to put your subject at their ease. These techniques are particularly use for anyone wishing to expand their boudoir photography business to include offering art nude shoots to their clients.
I am pleased to announce that the model for this event will be Vivi Blue – http://purpleport.com/portfolio/sellers/?referrer=ianbutty – Viv is a very experience art nude model and she describes art nude as her favourite genre.
There will be opportunities to create high-key (white background) images, low-key (black background) images and bodyscape images. A large selection of props will be available to enhance the images and to help inspire you with ideas.
Cost £82 per person (this includes lunch and printed notes).
