Fellow Photographers,

Some weeks it is easy to know what the headline story should be for the newsletter – this week is one of those weeks.  I’ve been busy putting together the 2015 programme of studio events.  Since I sent out the previous newsletter last Monday I have added 24 more events, workshops and courses to the calendar, taking the current total upto 31 photography related events.  This includes all FOUR full courses, NINE full day workshops, SIXTEEN Friday Night events and TWO Other Events. And I’m not finished yet, I am still adding more events!  If you want to see what’s on you can scroll down to the bottom of this newsletter, alternatively take a look at our What’s On page.

As ever I want to highlight two forthcoming events.  The first is the Friday’s Fascinating Fascinators with model Amy Linton and her collection of designer headwear.  This will be a great chance to look at the skills involved in creating great headshots.  The following Friday is our Create Your Own Art Nude Posing Guide event.  I’m already running out of spaces on that event.  So if you do want to come to it, I would advise that you book your place sooner rather than later.

From the blog this week we have an explanation of clam shell window lighting and a link to my latest YouTube video.  This week I am critiquing images from three photographers. To get notifications as soon as new videos are available please subscribe to the video feed on YouTube.

For all this and more…. please read on….

Fascinating Fascinators

For tonight’s Friday Night at the Studio event, Model Amy Linton is bringing her collection of designer fascinators to the studio for an evening of portraiture with a difference.

She has experience in catwalk and her work has been published. Amy covers many genres including pin up, dark gothic, avantgarde, fashion and everything inbetween. She also designs and styles her shoots as well as designing headwear which will be featured at this event.

As ever with our Friday Night events I will be on hand to explain lighting and camera settings if you need me to.  There will also be opportunities for people to set and modify the lighting if they wish.

Maximum number of spaces for this event will be 7.

Friday, 28 November 2014 – Create Your Own Art Nude Posing Guide

Create Your Own Art Nude Posing Guide

Location: Ian’s Studio
Time: 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Price: £29

Posing Guides are sets of images showing different way for a model to pose.  Art Nude photography is all about pose, and during a shoot it is sometimes difficult to remember what poses you might want a model to try.  At this session we will work with KarenR, an experienced art nude model, to enable each person to create their own posing guide.

Myself, the model (and the event attendees, if they wish) will bring along ideas and possibly images showing example poses.  Each of these poses will be recreated by the model and each photographer will get the opportunity to photograph the pose. Everyone will get to shoot each pose in turn before we move on to the next pose.

We will create and shoot poses in three different set-ups.  On a box (as shown on the eFlyer), standing or floor level on a plain background, and finally against a wall.

At the end of the evening for each scenario we will each have a set of images that show scores of different art nude poses, all under the same lighting conditions.  You can then refer to this guide when working with other models in the future.

Our model for the event will be KarenR.  Karen is regular model at Ian’s Studio and is very experienced as an art nude model.  You can find Karen’s portfolio on Purpleport : http://purpleport.com/portfolio/karenr/?referrer=ianbutty (NSFW)

Price: £29

Please book via my website: http://www.ians-studio.co.uk/events/create-your-own-art-nude-posing-guide/

From the Blog…

[Blog] Clam Shell Window Lighting

FD0626A-E13970

The image above of model Hazel is lit entirely using the light of the window which is behind her.  How did we achieve this and prevent Hazel’s face from becoming just a silhouette?  When you look at the image below the answer becomes obvious we used two reflectors to bounce the light back in to her face.   One reflector is placed at 45 degree above her and it is this that proved the majority of the illumination.  The second reflector is below and is used to fill-in the shadows under Hazel’s chin.

As you can see from the image there is only a small gap between the two reflectors, and it is through this gap that we place the lens of the camera.

The lighting is known as clam-shell lighting.

FD0626A-E13972

You don’t need two reflectors to do this.  As you can see we are using one reflector and just a sheet of white card.  You could use two sheets of white card.  However having a reflector with a silvered surface will bounce back more light than a white card and will help get more light on to your subject’s face.

[Video] Photo Critiques: Philip, Julie and Tristan

I few days ago, I posted on Facebook asking if anyone would like to have their photos critiqued, I had several replies and in this first video I examine three images from three photographers, Philip, Julie and Tristan.  As part of the review process I talk about the techniques the photographers have used and look at how we can use Adobe Lightroom to examine the images.

The video also shows some Lightroom techniques such as the use of the spot removal brush and cropping tools as well as how to move around an image when it is viewed at 100%

Please subscribe to the video feed on YouTube.  Also please subscribe to our weekly newsletter for more Photography Hints, Tips and How-Tos.

For the best way to view the video – please click the full screen icon and veiw in HD.

What do you think about this video?  Did you find it helpful?  Do you agree with my comments about the three images?  Please comment on my blog page or comment on the video page on YouTube and let me know your thoughts.

If there is sufficient interest in these types of video I will do more in the future.  If you would like one of your images to be critiqued please contact me and I will let you know what I require from you to be able to review your image

POTD Mon, 10 Nov 2014: Terre Haute

Terre Haute

One of the images from Stockport Garrick’s first studio production of the season “Terre Haute”. Which tells of the relationship between a reporter and the Oklahoma bomber. While covering the events of the bombing the play is more about the interaction between the two characters and how they both, in different ways, need to be accepted by the other.

You can see the full set of images from the play here: http://photos.imb.biz/garrick/terrehaute
